    Nurse Instructor, OR Recovery

    Responsibilities

    Clinical supervisory duties

    • Leads the team in development, implementation and monitoring of unit based clinical policies and procedures
    • Takes lead in identification, definition and monitoring of unit based clinical indicators Is responsible for continuing education/training for nurses in assigned unit
    • Assists the nurse manager and lead physician to initiate innovative and evidence based strategies to improve patient care
    • Participates in development of a culture of safe practice in collaboration with clinical teams, and actively participates in multidisciplinary clinical rounds.
    • Participates in evaluation of care and outcomes through Mortality
    • and Morbidity discussions, clinical incidence trends and clinical indicators
    • Participates in establishment of standards of care with unit staff, and monitors   delivery of care according to established standards.
    • Together   with   the   Nurse   Manager, conducts   regular evaluation of nurses and designs individual development plans based on identified learning/training needs
    • Is responsible for staff files and all learning material at unit level
    • In collaboration with the Manager nursing Practice, fosters development of nurses to maximum potential through providing educational/ training opportunities and exposure to appropriate learning forums.
    • Ensures   monthly report of learning activities and spot checks are submitted to the relevant persons on time
    • Communicates effectively with the multidisciplinary team about all clinical matters such as infection control in assigned unit, spot checks and documentation.
    • Is a resource person for the care team for all clinical matters

    Supervision of Nursing Staff

    • Makes daily rounds of all patients in the unit and assesses their health status to identify care needs.
    • Reviews patient   allocation to determine   correct   patient assignment according to the nurse's competence
    • Assists the nurses   at bedside in  patient  assessment   to identify individual patient needs
    • Assists   the   nurse   to   plan   and   implement    individual
    • interventions based identified patient needs
    • Guides   nurses   to evaluate effectiveness of care given through re-assessments
    • Ensures patients receive appropriate   teaching about their condition and treatments
    • Participates in discharge planning and ensures participation of patient's family and significant others

    Continuing Education

    • Ensures   adequate orientation   and settling of new  nurses  to assigned unit
    • The CPE works  closely with  nurses  at  bedside and  conducts
    • regular skill checks to identify their training/learning needs, and designs individual training Programs
    • Designs a plan for continuing unit based learning and works with the nurse manager to ensure participation of all nurses
    • Uses clinical incidences as learning opportunities for nurses and with them plans corrective and preventive actions
    • Maintains records of all learning activities for the unit and individual nurses participation
    • Designs methods to motivate nurses in assigned unit to pursue individual professional growth and development
    • Develops and maintains  effective networks  both  internal  and external to improve nursing practice

    Documentation

    • Participates in evaluation of nursing documents to ensure their appropriateness in capturing patient information
    • Ensures nursing staff are familiar with the documentation policy and trains nurses on the use of all nursing forms/ charts
    • Ensures compliance to documentation   policy through spot­ checks on  nursing  forms  such  Initial  assessment,  Vital signs chart,  Patient  Education   Record,  and  fluid  chart,  treatment sheet and progress notes chart

    Nursing Research & Quality Initiatives

    • Takes lead in unit based Continuous   Quality Improvement (CQI) projects, Clinical Care Program Certification       (CCPC) and   ensures    participation    by nurses.
    • Guides nursing staff in initiation of and participation in unit-based as well as hospital wide nursing research pro jects.

    Requirements

    • Minimum 5 years continuous nursing experience in A&E unit in an acute care hospital.
    • Registered Nurse with current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
    • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSc,N)
    • Certification in ACLS
    • Proficient in Basic computer skills
    • Demonstrates expert knowledge and skills in chosen area of work.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to teach and cascade information at all levels

    Clinical Nurse, NHDU

    Responsibilities:

    • Complete assessment and re-assessment of patients to identify their care needs
    • Develop written care plans based on patients changing needs, monitor and evaluate effectiveness of interventions
    • Initiate cardiac monitoring both room and central, be able to interpret monitor trends and communicate critical changes to the physician and Nurse manager
    • Carry out other hemodynamic monitoring to include CVP, UVCs, lab, radiological and ABG Evaluations
    • Document all assessment data, investigation results, care given, discussions with the multidisciplinary team, family/patient interactions in an accurate, comprehensive and timely manner
    • Prepare for and assist the physician in emergency procedures necessary for prompt control of patient's condition e.g. intubation, insertion of invasive lines, drains and administration of surfactant
    • Maintain adequate airway management to include oxygen therapy, nebulization and suctioning
    • Be able to perform peritoneal dialysis and care for a patient on the same as instructed.
    • Accurately administer all medication as per the treatment order sheet and in line with MMU guidelines
    • Provide safe environment for patients through adherence to infection control practices and other safety policies, and perform timely safety checks on incubators, IV pumps, oxygen source, ventilators, and cardiac monitors.
    • Be able to care for children undergoing exchange transfusion
    • Participate in unit-based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, spot checks and skill checks

    Requirement

    • Registered Nurse from a recognized School of Nursing or University
    • Higher Diploma in Paediatric/Neonatal Critical Care Nursing or experience in Neonatal Critical Care
    • Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
    • Certification in European Paediatric Life Support (EPLS)
    • Demonstrate evidence-based knowledge of current practices in Neonatal critical care nursing
    • Computer Literacy
    • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
