    Senior Research Scientists (Socioeconomics)

    The senior research scientists shall be deployed in Socioeconomics research area.  

    The duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail: –

    1. Prioritizing research problems for implementation;
    2. Developing research concepts for donor support;
    3. Guiding research scientists in identification of research areas;
    4. Reviewing project proposals, scientific publications and grant applications for submission;
    5. Coordinating medium sized multi-disciplinary research teams;

    For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have: –

    2. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in Economics, Public Policy, Development Studies or Agricultural Economics;
    3. Master’s degree in Economics, Public Policy, Development Studies, Agricultural Economics, or equivalent from a recognized institution;
    4. Published a minimum of five (5) peer reviewed publications in ISI-indexed journals, with at least two (2) first authorship as a Research Scientist, KMFRI Grade 6, or a comparable position.
    5. A supervisory course lasting not less than two (2) weeks.
    6. Project Management Course lasting not less than one (1) month from a recognized institution;
    7. Demonstrated professional competence as reflected in work performance and results; and

    1. Ensuring the Institute is compliant to international instruments related to marine and fisheries affairs;
    2. Ensuring quarterly reporting on status of implementation of international instruments related to marine and fisheries affairs;
    3. Providing advisory on the impact of international instruments;
    4. Arranging the business of the Board’s meetings, keep records of the proceedings of Board and perform other duties as the Board may direct;

    3. Experience in the development of regional ocean models is essential. Prior modelling experience with Regional Oceans Modeling System (ROMS) will be an advantage;
    4. Experience in the analysis of satellite and tide-gauge sea level observations;
    5. Excellent data analysis and data visualization skills. Good technic al skill in Linux shell scripting/ Python/ MATLAB/ RDI and Nortek software or similar packages is essential;
    6. Experience in conducting surveys in vessels at sea;
    7. BSc in Environmental Science, Aquatic Sciences and Physical Sciences;

    The laboratory analysts shall be deployed in any of the following research areas: Oceans and Coastal Systems & Blue Economy, Freshwater Systems, Aquaculture and Socioeconomics research areas. 

    Duties and responsibilities of the officer entail;

    1. Identifying the chemical and consumables required for an experiment;
    2. Collecting and preparing samples and specimens, managing and safely disposing samples and specimens;
    3. Maintaining the inventory of laboratory equipment;
    4. Carrying out experimental work;
    5. Undertaking analytical work (radiochemistry, radioecology and nuclear based biotoxins analysis);
    6. Maintaining and preserving specimens and cultures;
    7. Recording of experimental data;
    8. Setting and maintaining laboratory equipment;
    9. Maintaining laboratory records; and
    10. Carrying out demonstrations of laboratory functions to clients/visitors.

    For appointment to this grade a candidate must have: –

    1. Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following disciplines; Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biochemistry, Natural Resource Management, Nuclear science or equivalent from a recognized institution;
    2. Trainings in application of nuclear techniques in environmental studies (Pb 210) or food safety (biotoxins)
    3. Relevant work experience in analysis of radioisotopes, radioecology or radionuclides samples
    4. Experience in operating LSC, gamma counter or alpha counter
    5. Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C plus (C+) or equivalent
    6. Proficiency in computer applications
    7. Meets the requirements of chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya.

    Duties and responsibilities of the officer entail;

    1. Develop Technical specifications for new Laboratory equipment to bridge instrumentation gaps
    2. Conducting routine diagnostic and maintenance measures to the existing laboratory equipment
    3. Prepare annual work plan for scheduled maintenance, calibration and servicing of Laboratory equipment according to manufacturer’s manual.
    4. Maintain an up-to-date equipment inventory and initiate appropriate disposal of redundant equipment
    5. Ensure Electrical and mechanical safety of all bench top installations by arranging for provision of necessary infrastructure.
    6. Read, understand and interpret schematics, ladder drawings, technical specifications and manufacture’s manuals related to repair, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical instrumentation and control equipment.
    7. Test, calibrate, install, maintain, repair and troubleshoot electrical systems including, but not limited to: generators, PLC’s, electric motors, motor controls, flow equipment, alarm and telemetry systems, heating and exhaust systems, conduits, cable and relays.
    8. Evaluate instrument performance to identify optimization and enhancement of opportunities
    9. Deployment and retrieval of Oceanographic / Limnology equipment

    For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have: –

    1. Relevant work experience in an equivalent position in the public or private sector
    2. Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ and above.
    3. Degree from a recognized institution or its equivalent in the following fields; Electrical and electronics engineering or Instrumentation and control engineering or automation and or mechatronic engineering
    4. Proficiency in computer application; and
