    The Kwetu Training Centre for Sustainable Development is a grassroots Non-Governmental Organization located about 7 km from Mtwapa Town along Mtwapa Creek in Mtomondoni Village in the Coast Province of Kenya. The organization was founded in 1996 by Ulrike Neubert and other 5 professionals, who saw the vast under-utilized natural resources along the Kenyan Coast, where people were nonetheless living in adverse poverty in the midst of wealth. It was duly registered under the NGO Act of 1991 Laws of Kenya in 1997.

    Project Coordinator

    Ref - PC/KWETU/08/2022

    Job Summary:

    Reporting to the Centre manager, the project coordinator will be responsible for overall coordination in the implementation of the mariculture and Aquaponics project within the coastal counties.

    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for project workplan development and implementation
    • Responsible for development of period quality project reports and dissemination of project outcomes and impacts to relevant stakeholders
    • Supervise project team in the planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of the project according to the laid guidelines
    • Supervise and support the development of aquaculture infrastructure including fish hatchery and nurseries
    • Coordinate in the development of an aquaponics system
    • Coordinate in the development of operational crab aggregation station
    • Coordinate project trainings and mentorships
    • Coordinate community and Kwetu demo farm in upgrading of their culture facilities
    • Coordinate in the upgrading works of Kwetu as a training Centre
    • Coordinate in group monitoring and mentorship of aquaculture and aquaponic activities.
    • Attend to students on field excursions and research assistants attached to Kwetu.
    • Lead in concepts design in marine and related discipline
    • In collaboration with the finance coordinator, track budgets and funds absorption and ensure compliance of team to laid project guidelines
    • Supervise the culture of organisms within Kwetu demonstration farm and hatchery
    • Coordinate networking and collaborations with project partners and other stakeholders
    • Support and advice Centre Manager and Finance Coordinator on major project changes

    Required Qualifications and Experience:

    • At least a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management or related discipline. Advanced degree is preferred.
    • At least five years’ experience in development projects preferably in food security and income generation
    • Supervisory and coordination experience in projects especially within the coastal region
    • Community mobilization and training skills
    • Ability to work and to travel within the coastal counties. (Motorcycle riding skills will be added advantage)

    Mariculture assistant

    Ref - MA/KWETU/08/2022

    Reporting to the project officer, the mariculture assistant will be responsible for the daily management of mariculture infrastructure at Kwetu.

    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Participate in construction of ponds and repair.
    • Responsible for cleanliness of rearing containers and handling fish in rearing structures as needed to: reduce densities, inventory, grade, load, transfer, or release.
    • Perform daily duties or chores and husbandry activities including monitor fish health, development, rearing environment, waste load and water flows; disseminate relevant information in a timely manner, maintain accurate records.
    • Perform routine maintenance on systems and equipment.
    • Responsible for application of best fish breading and culture practices.
    • Assist with brood stock sourcing and development, sorting and spawning according to protocols.
    • Oversee trapping and spawning of fish, egg incubation, and fry rearing, applying knowledge of management and fish culturing techniques.
    • Recognize fish disease or parasite problems, promptly report problems to supervisor.
    • Organize and maintain hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds; respond to alarms; identify safety hazards and recommend remedies and/or take appropriate action.
    • Assist with environmental, water quality testing to stay within established parameters. This includes water flows to tanks and systems.
    • Prepares reports as required by the project and organization.
    • Support project implementation in community sites as directed

    Required Qualifications and Experience:

    • Diploma in Aquaculture, Aquatic sciences, fisheries or any relevant field.
    • At least 3 years’ experience working in an intensive fish hatchery or fish farm
    • Have basic research and good computer skills, Data collection, cleaning, analysis and report development.
    • Able to work independently and effectively under pressure
    • Flexibility and willingness to work odd hours

    M&E and Communication Officer

    Ref - M&E/KWETU/08/2022

    Job Summary:

    Reporting to the Project Coordinator, the M&E and communication Officer is responsible for the day-to-day tracking and reporting of project activities. The role includes rolling out standardized data collection tools and database systems; monthly data collection; verification of results reported; analysis and presentation of findings and project progress; set up of project accountability and learning mechanisms; and documentation of feedback and response from and to Kwetu and project beneficiaries.

    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Design monitoring and evaluation plan.
    • Ensures evidence-based tracking of M&E plan and oversees its implementation and periodic revision for all project outputs;
    • Supports and supervises collection and analysis of data for project M&E in accordance with timeframes set in the project work-plan;
    • Develops, implements, and monitors the tools/systems for gathering, reporting, and analyzing performance data for impact and sustainability of project implementation. Updates
    • and implements M&E framework for all project components; Assist in analyzing results achieved compared with objectives expected and identify the appropriate means and methods required at the project level;
    • Leads efforts, design tools and training sessions to develop an inquisitive learning culture within the project team and partners to feed innovations into organizational decision-making;
    • Manages all M&E activities and reporting for the project.
    • Collects and reports on indicators required by the donor. Measures progress toward achieving project goals;
    • Provides support in the development of the work plan, quarterly reports and annual reports;
    • Applies and promotes the use of participatory documentation techniques that involve project participants and staff in the process;
    • Design and assist in managing program assessments and evaluations, and promoted a culture of evidence-based decision making, and effectively communicating program results to a wide
    • variety of stakeholders.
    • Develop and implement robust accountability systems to ensure activities respond to stockholders needs and that the results obtained are in line with the pre-established indicators and targets.
    • Work closely with colleagues to strengthen the organization’s learning strategy,
    • Take a lead role in extracting and consolidating evidence and learning from organization’s evaluation and project reports to identify best practice across the Go-Blue project.
    • Promoting the integration of learning into project activities.
    • Contribute to lessons and knowledge sharing on best practices both internally and externally.
    • Documentation of best practices and facilitate the use of such data to drive project design and decision-making.
    • In collaboration with the other teams, generate knowledge products such as publications, case studies and their dissemination both within and without the organization.
    • Establish and maintain a knowledge management hub for the project.
    • Systematic dissemination of evidence and results, both internally and externally.
    • Support Business Development efforts with respect to logical frameworks, indicators and evaluation plans.

    Required Qualifications and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Community development, development studies, international relations. statistics or related fields
    • At least 3 years M&E and communication experience in the design and implementation of development projects implemented by national/international NGOs or advanced degree in the related discipline.
    • Ability to work and flexibility to travel within the coastal counties

    Project officer

    Job Summary:

    • At least a bachelor’s degree in Fisheries and aquaculture, Aquatic sciences, or related discipline
    • Five years’ experience on coastal aquaculture
    • Ability to work with teams and mentor others
    • Community mobilization and training skills
    • Ability to work and to travel within the coastal counties. (Motorcycle riding skills will be added advantage)
