    Finance Intern

    Duties

    • Supporting Financial Reporting: Accounts receivable, bank statement reconciliations, preparation of financial statements, Data Analysis, risk management and quality assurance, General office administrative tasks, and any other tasks that may be assigned.
    • Supporting Review of grants validity and open commitment Assist in Monitoring the reporting compliance of implementing partners:
    • Provide support in Review the implementing partner agreements and update the reporting schedule accordingly.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
    • Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
    • basic technical training in accounting e.g CPA or CIMA, ACCA part I Preferred areas of studies: Bachelor's Degree (BA/BSc) in Accounting, Commerce, Business Administration or any other related studies.
    • Good knowledge of standard software applications, including MS Excel, MS Outlook, and SharePoint is desirable.
    • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

    GEF Project Sustainability

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Project Review and Analysis Report: The consultant will conduct a comprehensive review and analysis of selected projects, focusing on their appraisal, midterm review, and terminal evaluation. The report will assess how sustainability has been integrated into project design, monitoring or project implementation and adaptive project management. The report will explore definitions, measurements and metrics of exit strategies, and their applications in other UN entities’ GEF projects. The report will identify key gaps and findings related to sustainability planning and execution.
    • Training Seminar for UNEP Project Development Teams: The consultant will design and deliver a comprehensive training session for UNEP project development teams, focusing on:
    • Strategies to strengthen sustainability beyond project completion and with a particular emphasis on the concept of exit strategies.
    • Other sustainability topics will be addressed such as designing and planning for the replication and scaling up of approaches demonstrated to be effective through the project etc. iii. How to apply adaptive management during project implementation to mitigate risks to sustainability (e.g., political change).
    • Potential role of co-financing. The session will explain how exit strategies differ from project completion and closure processes and will address the unique challenges and considerations related to exit strategies in environmental projects. A relevant case study will be presented, illustrating an effective exit strategy, with an analysis of the challenges encountered during project closure and how the exit strategy helped mitigate risks.
    • Guidance Paper: The consultant will develop a guidance paper that outlines best practices and provides practical recommendations for improving sustainability in project design. This paper will include real-life project examples and offer actionable insights to help project managers better integrate sustainability considerations both at the design stage and during project implementation to support the endurance of project outcomes beyond project completion.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Advanced graduate degree (MSc or PhD) in International Development, Economics, Environmental Management, or a related discipline is required.
    • A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in project management and project design is required.
    • Experience working on environmental projects is desirable.
    • Academic/research experience is desirable. Demonstrated experience in delivering technical training sessions is desirable.
    • Strong documentation and report writing skills is desirable.
    • Proven communication skills, including excellent presentation abilities in English is desirable.
    • Familiarity with GEF programming is desirable. Proficiency in standard software packages, including PowerPoint, is desirable.

    Capacity Needs Assessment on Wastewater Surveillance for Africa Expert

    • Conducting a thorough assessment of existing wastewater surveillance capabilities across African countries, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and gaps.
    • Analysing the current state of infrastructure, technical expertise, and resources available for wastewater surveillance in different African regions.
    • Identifying key stakeholders and potential partners for wastewater surveillance capacity building initiatives in Africa.
    • Assessing the policy and regulatory landscape across African countries regarding wastewater surveillance and environmental monitoring.
    • Identifying opportunities for knowledge transfer and collaboration between African countries and international experts in wastewater surveillance.
    • Developing a comprehensive report outlining capacity building opportunities, challenges, and recommended strategies for enhancing environmental and wastewater surveillance in Africa.
    • Contributing to the development of training materials and capacity building programs based on the analysis findings.
    • Providing expert advice on integrating gender considerations and safeguards intocapacity building strategies for wastewater surveillance in Africa.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Master’s degree in public health, environmental health, wastewater, or another related field is required. PhD degree in public health, environmental health, wastewater, or another related field is highly desired.
    • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in waster -surveilliance is required and, within the 5 years, at least 3 years of relevant experience in developing capacity needs assessments (or gap analyses) is required. Comprehensive knowledge of the African context on wastewater and environmental surveillance is highly desirable
    • Proven record of at least 3 scientific publications or technical advice on wastewater surveillance is highly desirable
    • Experience designing and implementing roadmaps for wastewater surveillance is highly desirable.
    • Experience with or within the UN system or in other international organizations on wastewater surveillance is desirable.
