    Senior Underwriter

    Under the supervision of, and reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, the Senior Underwriter’s key duties and responsibilities will be as below:

    • Generate business through marketing activities and increasing the visibility of ATI. This involves meeting one-on-one with clients and prospects and attending different marketing events organised by ATI or ATI’s business partners;
    • Assist to organize/manage awareness events in countries of responsibility;
    • Support underwriting business through;
      • Screening business enquiries based on eligibility criteria;
      • Assessing the risks of the proposed transactions and produce a report of the risk to convince approvers to accept the risk;
      • Issuing non-binding/indicative term sheets;
      • Arranging reinsurance for transactions requiring reinsurance support;
      • Preparing of policy documents and
      • Educating policy holders on the A-Z of the policy they are about to sign.
    • Manage and monitor the underwritten risk - Support and guide the Portfolio Services Personnel in;
      • Ensuring timely payment of premiums;
      • Following up on any outstanding documentation/information from policyholders and
      • Continuously monitoring the assigned portfolio, pre-empting any potential risk events thereon; and promptly bringing such to management’s attention.
    • Support generation of reports such as Underwriting reports, Broker reports, Marketing reports, Mission/back to office reports, Underwriting Department country marketing plan and activity reports,
    • Policy wordings and any other Management reports;
    • Assist the Claims Department to manage claims particularly risks under watch list, and support on recovery initiatives;
    • Implement effective people management initiatives including:
      • Monitoring workflow, volume of work deliverables and the delivery of work of direct reports;
      • Assisting team members in outlining their professional development goals and identifying any
      • need for and monitoring “on the job training”; mentoring and coaching team members;
      • Ensuring the efficient and fair assignment of work to direct reports; and
      • Providing ongoing informal and formal feedback to direct reports and ensuring direct reports
      • who are primary supervisors provide similar feedback to those they supervise.

    Skills and Attributes:

    • A Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), Finance, Economics, Banking or other financial service specialization;
    • A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Banking or other financial service specialization
    • CII or CPA/ACCA (an added avantage);
    • A minimum of Eight (8) years relevant experience;
    • Technical understanding, expertise, and experience in insurance and re-insurance;
    • A proven track record of success underwriting complex transactions or providing sector specific underwriting skills;
    • Key Stakeholders management skills;

    Underwriter

    Under the supervision of, and reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, through the Senior Underwriter, the Underwriter’s key duties and responsibilities will be as below:

    RLSF Coordinator

    The RLSF Coordinator will primarily oversee RLSF projects and processes running from identifying pipelines, managing projects implementation and reporting on the same. Under the Supervision of the Chief Underwriting Officer, the RLSF Coordinator’s key duties and responsibilities will be as below:

    • Contribute to the improvement of policies and documents relating to the Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF) such as legal documentation, RLSF agreements (MoUs etc.), brochures, policy documentation, investment policy, cash management policy, risk management policy, etc. when applicable;
    • To gather and analyze feedback from the Energy Sector and take this feedback into consideration in product development including products for the benefit of off-grid and C&I projects;
    • Identify effective RLSF marketing channels and promote RLSF among potential investors and lenders, through these channels (partner websites, brochures, conferences, etc.);
    • Contribute to define the strategy and conditions per country. Develop and maintain country cover notes;
    • Develop and regularly identify a pipeline of IPP projects for RLSF and coordinate with the African Energy Guarantee Facility (AEGF) to identify synergies, potential for collaboration between AEGF and RLSF on projects. Wherever suitable, this includes also marketing and events relevant to the implementation of both initiatives - RLSF and AEGF, and coordination with AEGF stakeholders like EIB and Munich Re - Contribute to the definition and updating of the RLSF pricing strategy;
    • Coordinate with the Portfolio and Risk Teams on updates to the underwriting guidelines in the Operations Manual relevant to RLSF
    • Upon request by ATI management, support with communication to potential future investors and stakeholders in respect of RLSF as well as provide support to ATI in responding to queries from donors or any other stakeholders;
    • Identification of ATI needs for further Technical Assistance, identification of potential donors, coordination of mobilization efforts and support Legal in documentation of Technical Assistance (TA) Agreements;
    • Coordination of the reporting requirements from all RLSF partners and compliance with the Framework Arrangement and Financing Agreement(s) entered into with various partners;
    • Manage the accounting of TA expenditure to relevant partners including the confirmation that services that are being invoiced by ATI were actually performed and documented, the payments have already been effected by ATI and all necessary documents have been presented and are in line with regulations/ standards;
    • Support ATI in managing TA (including budgeting, recruitment of consultants, ATI internal staff and implementation of any agreed tasks) within agreed milestones;
    • Propose improvements to the Transparency Tool and follow up on adaptation of the Tool by stakeholders;
    • Support the incorporation of RLSF in the Underwriting System, including improvements to current initiatives in this regard. Support the development of specifications for the underwriting system for changes that are required by the RLSF product;
    • Improve the expertise and underwriting methodology of RLSF;
    • Coach, train and develop the underwriting competencies of the Underwriting Team on Energy projects. Identify training opportunities for ATI team relevant to underwriting of RLSF transactions;
    • Review energy projects and propose the best underwriting structure. Support underwriters in the review of the transactions themselves (Non-Binding Indication (NBI) and Underwriting stages) if required;
    • Underwrite large/ complex deals;
    • Assist ATI in becoming a center of excellence in energy/ renewable energy;
    • Prepare timely reports to the RLSF Steering Committee.
    • Support the periodic audit of RLSF;
    • To manage the Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF) and the African Energy Guarantee Facility (AEGF) including any reporting requirements to external partners;
    • To work with the Chief Underwriting Officer and the Chief Financial Officer in claims determination and payment as well as claims avoidance;
    • To perform other duties as may be assigned to you from time to time

    Bilingual RLSF Underwriter

    Under the supervision of, and reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, through the RLSF Coordinator, the Bilingual Underwriter’s key duties and responsibilities will be as below:

    • To undertake, and generate business through the promotion and marketing of ATI products and services on an on-going basis. This includes, but is not restricted to, leading on the promotion and marketing of ATI products and services for the Energy Sector;
    • Contribute to the drafting of the underwriting guidelines of ATI for RLSF product, subject to ATI approval;
    • Assess countries Renewable Energy Sectors and contribute to defining the strategy and conditions per country;
    • Develop and maintain country cover notes;
    • Promote the RLSF among potential investors and lenders, through different channels (partner web sites, brochures, conferences…);
    • Develop commercial relationships, attract new clients and contribute to the commercial strategy
    • Take Underwriting responsibility for specific countries/ regions/ sectors as and when required;
    • Advise clients on ATI’s policies, processes, products and requirements;
    • To screen and assess proposed transactions against ATI’s underwriting eligibility criteria;
    • To issue non-binding indications (NBIs) on eligible insurance applications;
    • Underwrite energy and renewable energy deals including the sector specific facilities – African Energy Guarantee Facility (AEGF) and the Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF). To identify and evaluate all relevant commercial and political risks relating to proposed transactions and make sound underwriting recommendations to the Chief Underwriting Officer;
    • To negotiate terms, and pricing and to review Insurance Offer Letters for compliance with agreed terms;
    • To draft and negotiate proposed insurance policies for consideration and approval by ATI Senior Management, and support the Portfolio Services Team in administering and monitoring existing insurance policies;
    • Support the underwriting team in reviewing and underwriting large/ complex, structured or project finance based deals (energy, renewable energy, infrastructure);
    • Where necessary, to seek and place reinsurance among ATI reinsurers and other insurance companies in the international market;
    • To develop effective client relationships, with a focus on ATI partners in the Energy Sector, including and not restricted to Donors, Development Financial Institutions, Developers, Brokers, Multilaterals, Utilities and Information Providers;
    • To support the RLSF Coordinator develop reports for external partners;
    • To work with the Chief Underwriting Officer and the Chief Financial Officer in claims determination and payment as well as claims avoidance;
    • To work with the Chief Underwriting Officer and RLSF Coordinator in developing and executing an annual business plan and budget;
    • To work with the RLSF Coordinator, and external consultants where possible, in developing suitable insurance or guarantee products for the benefit of distributed energy projects (e.g. off-grid, C&I, etc.)
    • To perform other duties as may be assigned to you from time to time.
