    Research and Policy Analyst

    JOB DETAILS:

    AFIDEP is looking to recruit a Research and Policy Analyst who will join our research and policy to work on the generation and translation of evidence, and policy analysis and engagement, in our Population Dynamics and the Demographic Dividend thematic area, the Health and Wellbeing thematic area, or the Environment and Climate Change thematic area. The positions are based at AFIDEP’s Nairobi office.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the conceptualization, design and implementation of research, capacity building and policy engagement programmes.

    Requirements

    • PhD in Demography, Sociology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Environment, or Climate Change.
    • At least five (5) years’ post-doctoral experience in policy research and advocacy in the development sector or a related field, including at least three (3) years at a senior management level in a research or academic setting;
    • Experience in the management and coordination of research programmes and partnerships, and monitoring and evaluation of programmes;
    • Experience in multidisciplinary approaches aimed at results for sustainable development.
    • In-depth knowledge of current emerging issues in African development;
    • Excellent writing skills, including policy-oriented reports and scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals;
    • Programme management skills;
    • Deep and strategic thinking, with close attention to detail;

    Research and Policy Associates

    AFIDEP is looking to recruit Research and Policy Associates who will join our research and policy teams to conduct focused research, evidence synthesis, and translation; engage stakeholders, such as policymakers, to promote consideration and utilization of evidence in decision-making processes; and participate in capacity development activities. They will be based either in our Population Dynamics and the Demographic Dividend, Health and Wellbeing, or Environment and Climate Change Thematic areas, depending on their areas of training and expertise. These positions are based at AFIDEP’s Nairobi office.

     KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Coordinate the implementation of research and/or policy projects, including secondary data analysis, scenario modeling, policy and programme analysis and audits, and rapid reviews and synthesis of evidence;
    • Promote the application of research findings in decision-making processes at national, regional, and international levels;
    • Write analytical research reports and contribute to authoring research papers;
    • Contribute to capacity-building activities;
    • Contribute to proposal writing; and
    • Develop and disseminate policy-oriented materials, including policy briefs.

     REQUIREMENTS

    • Master’s degree in health economics, development economics, demography, public health, statistics, data science, education, development studies, governance, environment, or related field;
    • At least 3 years’ experience after getting Master’s degree, in conducting research, analysis and reporting of research findings and proposal writing;
    • Strong qualitative and/or quantitative research skills;
    • Excellent writing skills with experience in scientific writing, synthesizing research evidence into outputs that are usable by policymakers, or developing policy-oriented advocacy materials;
    • Demonstrated experience in the use of scientific software for data analysis and management, such as Endnote, SPSS, Stata, NVivo, or Atlas.ti;
    • Experience designing and implementing research and/or conducting policy analysis;
    • Experience in program management and/or monitoring and evaluation;
    • Experience working in or with the public sector (e.g. governments);
    • Strong intra and interpersonal skills, analytical and critical thinking; and
    • Working proficiency in English; French is an added advantage.

    Research and Policy Analyst - Economics

    AFIDEP is looking to recruit a Research and Policy Analyst who will join our research team in conducting costing and cost-benefit analyses of development interventions and conduct or review systematic reviews and programme evaluations to draw policy and programme design lessons on a wide range of development issues including: population, health, education, environment and climate change, and governance. Applicants should be holders of a PhD in Economics, or Development Economics, with a minimum of three years’ postdoctoral experience in conducting complex quantitative analyses. The candidate should also have demonstrable experience in qualitative analysis, policy analysis and policy engagement, and in writing quality research reports, policy-oriented products, and journal publications. Applicants should have a track record of scientific publications in reputable journals. This position could be based at either AFIDEP’s Nairobi office or Lilongwe office.

    Communications Officer

    AFIDEP is looking to recruit a Communications Officer who will contribute to the design and implementation of AFIDEP’s policy engagement, branding and communications strategy to raise AFIDEP’s profile and impact as a regional research and policy institute and enhance the role of research evidence in development processes in Africa.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Manage development of and write content for institutional publications such as the annual report, newsletters, African Development Perspectives as well as the website and social media accounts.
    • Facilitate engagement with policymakers and support research staff in translating evidence and packaging it into policy oriented and general reading outputs including policy briefs, infographics, animations, blogs, media releases, media kits, Op-Eds, videos, podcasts, and photo-stories.
    • Contribute to capacity building of AFIDEP staff, other researchers, policy makers, and journalists in communications and evidence informed decision making.
    • Establish and sustain links and contact with journalists and media houses to ensure visibility of AFIDEP’s work in the media.
    • Contribute to managing AFIDEP’s social media accounts (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and You Tube), ensuring regular and quality content emanating from our work, and keep abreast of other emerging social media and web 2.0 tools, taking advantage of these to extend the reach and impact of AFIDEP’s work.
    • Contribute to managing the AFIDEP website, ensuring that web content related to our programmes are well presented and up to date on the website (includes developing content for website).
    • Support the development and management of AFIDEP’s library/information resources – both physical and digital information resources.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Masters’ Degree in Communications, Media or International Relations.
    • At least five (5) years’ experience in science and development communications.
    • Excellent and demonstrable writing and technical editing skills, especially policy-oriented publications and media products.
    • Excellent presentation and public-speaking/verbal communication skills.
    • Technical skills in publications design, web design and management, and social media platforms.
    • Ability to negotiate, network and form credible relationships within organisation as well as with senior decision-makers in external institutions.
    • Skilled communicator, able to dialogue effectively with a wide range of audiences and to represent the organisation with authority and credibility to the outside world, including the media.
    • Experience in science and development communications, including translating and communicating research to non-scientific audiences such as the media and the public.

    Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Associate

    AFIDEP is looking to recruit a Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) specialist who will develop and oversee the operationalization of the Institute’s MEL framework and systems to ensure that they effectively support the achievement of the Institute’s strategic plan. The job holder will also provide MEL support on the Institute projects with governments and other partners.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Coordinate development of Institutional and project annual work plans.
    • Support various Program partners to develop their respective MERL Plans.
    • Develop quarterly Institutional and project performance reports.
    • Guide the process of identifying key performance indicators including developing the parameters for monitoring Institution-wide and program performance.
    • Develop and regularly review Institutional performance monitoring tools.
    • Track activity implementation and undertake analysis of implementation milestones
    • Provide leadership in writing results-based, target-oriented periodic performance reports.
    • Develop a plan for capacity building on MEL for staff of AFIDEP and partner organizations.
    • Provide MEL technical support to program MERL specialists, ensuring congruence between program/project and Institutional MERL activities and outputs.
    • Communicate learning for internal and external audiences.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Master’s Degree in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, Bachelor’s degree in Biostatistics, Applied Statistics or a relevant discipline and Postgraduate qualification in Monitoring and Evaluation.
    • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience at a senior level on MEL, including institutional MEL development and oversight. Experience in a regional/international organization is desirable.
    • Good analytical skills coupled with ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders Knowledge of integrated multi-sectoral programming.
    • Experience and knowledge in using a wide range of project planning methods and good understanding of the project management cycle.
    • Proven quantitative and qualitative research skills developed within a research institution.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Creative and independent report writing skills.
    • Proven ability to structure persuasive arguments in a strategic manner.
    • Strong IT skills with excellent command of data analysis and reporting software.
