    Consultancy to Provide Psychosocial Support

    The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa based international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant multidisciplinary research. Our research addresses important development issues and challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization and wellbeing.

    The CPSE project aims to act as a critical and neutral knowledge partner to the constellation of actors advocating for the full domestication and implementation of continental commitments on the sexual and reproductive health, and the rights of Africa’s young people and women. The project is planning to conduct data collection on the lived experiences of pregnant and parenting adolescents and is seeking to have a counsellor who can provide psychosocial support to participants and enumerators who may experience distress given the sensitive nature of the topic.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide counselling and psychosocial support to the field interviewers and adolescent girls.
    • Ensure professionalism and ethics in service delivery.

    Qualifications

    • A degree in counseling, psychology or related field from a recognized institution.
    • Experience in the provision of psychosocial services to young people and understanding of the mental health challenges they face.
    • Experience working in informal settlements.

    Safeguarding Consultant

    Supporting Access for Adolescents to Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Health Services (SAFIRE) project is being implemented to address the health care needs of adolescents and increase access to high-quality reproductive health services. The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is evaluating the project by generating evidence that helps to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of the implementation process and the impact of the Safire intervention. The evaluation is being conducted in Bungoma, Kericho, Kiambu, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu counties. As part of the project activities, we are seeking to recruit a safeguarding consultant.

    Objective of the Assignment

    The safeguarding consultant will be required to develop a safeguarding protocol expected to be adopted by the various Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) in the country.

    Scope of Work

    The consultant will undertake the following duties and responsibilities;

    1. Consult the relevant bodies and help develop safeguarding protocol for reporting adverse events in social and behavioral research for institutional review board (IRB).
    2. Facilitate workshop with members of IRBs and other key relevant stakeholders to support the development of safeguarding protocol.
    3. Develop a whistleblowing policy and other ways of reporting adverse events to the relevant authorities.
    4. Interview or discuss with representatives of the major IRBs and stakeholders to capture their views and opinions.

    Deliverables and Outputs

    • Develop a safeguarding protocol to be shared with National Commission for Science Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) and Institutional Review Board (IRB).
    • Create a whistleblowing policy for reporting adverse events identified during research to the relevant stakeholders.
    • Facilitate a joint workshop with stakeholders.
    • Provide a report.

    Qualifications

    • At least a Master’s Degree in Humanities or Social sciences. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and professional training and/or relevant work experience in safeguarding is acceptable in lieu of advanced degree.
    • Experience in research ethics in social sciences and ethical issues that arise during behavioral and social research.
    • Expertise in safeguarding training, research integrity and misconduct policies.
    • Knowledgeable on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

    Mobile Game Developer

    SCOPE OF WORK

    APHRC is considering engaging a mobile game development studio to design a digital version of the Mbeteza board game. The responsibilities of the game development studio are as follows:

    • Formulate ideas for the mobile game and how it would be expected to function in the form of sketches, mind maps, flowcharts etc. At this stage, the studio needs to support the team in identifying the target players, elements that would attract players to the game and engage them as well as surprise features, just to name a few.
    • Guide the team in the best options to explore in the development process while expounding on all possibilities for the app. The studio shall play a key role in developing the building blocks of the game including the game mechanics, settings, technology and interactions.
    • Implement ways of monetizing into the game interface, consider ads and buying tokens Develop a proof of concept.
    • Design visuals for the game with the assistance of the board game developer so that there is synergy between the two products.
    • Create the game design documentation.
    • Design game architecture.
    • Create a playable prototype.
    • Design the final game and conduct final tests with it before it is deemed complete.
    • Participate in a collaborative environment, receiving and giving constructive criticism to the creative team and beyond.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • 3+ years of experience in mobile game design.
    • At least a Diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Digital Game Development or any other related field.
    • Knowledge of UI/UX, particularly in gaming.
    • Proficiency in programming languages such as Java or C++.
    • Keen sense of game mechanics.
    • Up-to-date with industry software such as Unity or its equivalents.
    • Ability to work with existing designs and consultant

    A plus:

    • Technical experience in game design and game UI experience.
    • Strong technical and problem-solving skills.
    • Knowledge of health and population challenges in Africa.
