    Fulltime Faculty, Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC)

    Job Summary

    • The Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) seeks to hire a faculty member who will help to nurture the next generation of journalists, media leaders and communications professionals for the East Africa Region.
    • The main purpose of this role is support and teach and share knowledge with students in the various academic programmes offered by GSMC: Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation (EMMLI), Masters of Arts in Digital Journalism (MADJ) and a upcoming program in Strategic Communications.
    • As well as being a media scholar, the faculty will have a comprehensive knowledge of trends in the media and communication industry as well all-round competence in the practical application of different forms of digital media.

    Responsibilities

    • Teach across the GSMC academic programs including Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation (EMMLI), Masters in Digital Journalism (MADJ) and Strategic Communications and train in the professional development courses;
    • Collaborate with AKU colleagues to create online content to support the teaching of academic and professional development courses;
    • Conduct and evaluate students’ performance through examinations and other assessment parameters as per university guide;
    • Counsel and coach students on course-related matters, career path planning, advising on thesis establishment and development as well as guiding on projects;
    • Contribute to the development of new curriculum and/or the review of existing curricular;
    • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise in journalism, digital media, media leadership and communications; and
    • Actively work towards research funding, by writing proposals, engaging in grant applications and hosting research conventions.

    Requirements

    • PHD in a relevant discipline – Journalism or Media and Communication from a recognised university;
    • She/he should have 3-5 years of teaching experience at university level. Experience in working with graduate students is essential;
    • She/he should have experience in blended teaching, both online and in person;
    • She/he will have strong research and/or practice portfolio;
    • She/he should demonstrate achievement in academic delivery, development of course content and outlines and programme coordination;
    • She/he should be able to work independently;
    • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment; and
    • Evidence of leadership will be an added advantage.

    Part Time Faculty/Lecturer (Biochemistry), Department of Biomedical Sciences

    Introduction

    • The Department of Biomedical Sciences is a multi-disciplinary department comprising of faculty from a wide range of basic science teaching and research expertise, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, pathology, pharmacology, immunology and neuroscience. The department strives to inspire, innovate and lead in biochemical science teaching and learning and inclusive biomedical community where students, academics, researchers, clinicians, alumni and industry together foster learning.
    • AKU- Department of Biomedical Sciences is seeking a part time Biochemistry Lecturer who will make a significant contribution to the delivery of the undergraduate teaching including the delivery of high-quality teaching in biochemistry across MBChB. The faculty will have an important academic and research leadership role in embedding research expertise into the life of the discipline and Department of Biomedical Sciences and will be required to develop high-quality, productivity-driven networks across AKU and with local, national and international, internal and external partners.

    Responsibilities

    • Share responsibility for the operational planning and management of Biochemistry teaching and assessment sessions, taking account of health and safety issues and balancing competing pressures to ensure they are well organized, pedagologically sound and make good use of resources;
    • Contribute to curriculum development and innovation in teaching, learning and assessment in Biochemistry;
    • Provide academic support and advice to Medical College students;
    • Contribute to scholarship or research in Medical Education or other areas of enquiry within the Medical College in collaboration with colleagues; and
    • Represent the Medical College at local, regional and national meetings relevant to medical education and the specialist subject of Biochemistry with internal and external bodies and develop leadership in this domain.

    Requirements

    • Should have an honours degree in Biochemistry or related discipline with a Postgraduate degree in Biochemistry;
    • Should hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher/Medical Education or equivalent;
    • Should have experience in teaching of Biochemistry in an undergraduate medical programme (or similar) using evidence-informed interactive approaches for large and small groups and incorporating information technology;
    • Experience in teaching postgraduates and undergraduates in programmes other than MBChB or equivalent;
    • Assessment in an undergraduate medical programme with demonstrated ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates; and
    • Should have a track record of publication in international journals with scholarsip/research in medical education or other discipline relevant to Health Sciences.

    Research Assistant (2), Brain and Mind Institute

    Job Summary

    • This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya. Working collaboratively with a team of Implementation Scientists, the Research Assistant (RA) will support several aspects of research undertakings including but not limited to data collection/curation, cleaning, analysis, and report generation. The RA will also assist with transcribing qualitative data (IDIs, KII or FG), as well support translation of research tools from English to Swahili or Swahili to English on a need basis.

    Responsibilities

    • Contribute to development/refining data collection tools;
    • Assist with recruiting study participants;
    • Undertake data collection (Quantitative and Qualitative) as assigned;
    • Support in validating, cleaning, transforming, and comparing quantitative and qualitative data from different sources;
    • Support in data management and storage;
    • Support data analysis;
    • Undertake transcriptions and translations;
    • Assist with drafting reports and presentations based on qualitative and quantitative research and analysis;
    • Assist in conducting literature reviews and generating manuscripts;
    • Participate in meetings and support documentation of meeting deliberations; and
    • Support other activities aligned with BMI’s programming.

    Requirements

    • At least two years’ experience in data collection, preferably in a health/academic/research setting;
    • Knowledge and skills of handling and managing quantitative and qualitative data. Knowledge of Redcap or Qualtrics is desirable but not compulsory;
    • Experience analyzing quantitative and qualitative data (preferable using SPSS, QSR Nvivo, MAXDA or Atlas-I or other related statistical software);
    • Experience with research translation and transcribing is an added advantage (training will also be provided);
    • Keen ability to work independently, show initiative, and take ownership, as well as a natural problem solver with a bias to action;
    • Good at oral and written communication. Excellent inter-personal relationship with ability to work well with colleagues and full spectrum of academic staff from trainees to senior faculty members and researchers, located in different geographic zones; and
    • Confidentiality and ability to safeguard research data including audio files.
