JOB PURPOSE
The Project Associate will provide technical expertise and support in implementation of Amref Global Fund Malaria project activities. S/he will lead in the process of planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of all project Social Behaviour Change (SBC) activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project coordination
- Participate in coordination, design, planning and implementation of project activities
- Provide technical support in the implementation of malaria social behaviour change activities
- Represent the project in various technical working groups (including SBC) at various levels to strengthen networks and partnerships
- Monthly review of sub-recipients (SRs) programmatic reports and providing timely feedback and follow ups
- Participate in managing relevant project financial transactions
Capacity building
- Participate in capacity building sub-recipients on SBC activities, advocacy with religious and community leaders to create an enabling environment for practice of malaria behaviours, as applicable
- Identify gaps during implementation and monthly reports review.
Technical support
- Lead implementation of social behaviour change in collaboration with National Malaria Control Program, County/Sub County CHMTs, Facilities, Community Health Promoters, Community Groups and other relevant partners.
- Provide technical support to sub-recipients to ensure quality implementation of project activities
- Provide technical support in the development and writing of new concepts and proposals for fundraising
Documentation and research
- Documentation and dissemination of lessons learnt and best practices during project activities implementation.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Participate in monitoring and mentoring of sub-recipients and providing technical support and capacity development to plan, implement, monitor and report on grants awarded.
- Prepare and submit timely and quality activity reports, including field notes and success stories, to effectively capture lessons learnt on the ground from the project.
- Participate in preparation of donor reports, annual work plans, budgets, M&E plans and performance frameworks, monthly, quarterly and annual reports relating to the project as per donor requirements
- Participate in monitoring the implementation of project activities to ensure conformance to project objectives, work plans, budget and expected results.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in a health-related field with at least 3 years’ work experience in advocacy, social behaviour changes and/or community mobilization.
- Experience in malaria programs will be an added advantage.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Project Officer – Sanitation and Hygiene is expected to provide consistent and high-quality technical support in relation to sustained WASH access and behaviors. The position involves liaising with local authorities, communities, and other agencies regularly to ensure effective implementation of activities as well as participate in WASH-related forums. As part of the assignment the position holder is expected to identify, design and develop/adopt communication approaches, manuals and materials on appropriate water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, health promotion and disease prevention, and support in project surveys and need assessments. S/he is expected to coordinate training and monitoring of Community Health Workers, Community Health Extension Workers and hygiene promoters with frequent trips to the project sites to organize promotion activities, collect data and statistics concerning issues that relates with WASH BCC and provide periodic progress updates. The position holder will be based in Turkana.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Support
- Lead in the development and implementation of a responsive social and behavior change communication strategy and framework.
- Provide consistent technical support to relevant government departments and actors on implementation of the social behavior change strategy, and obtain buy-in of the project’s approaches and models by communities and local leaders.
- Organize community groups, generate community resources and educate them on sustainable community involvement in the sanitation and hygiene promotion interventions working in conjunction with relevant government departments and partners,
- Coordinate with project manager and implementation team to ensure implementation plans and activities are aligned to intended project outcomes and BCC frameworks.
- Provide quality control for the Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) interventions.
Documentation and Research
- Participate in development of knowledge products to promote learning.
- Capacity Building Provide technical input in development and implementation of SBCC capacity building interventions at national and county levels.
- Participate in support supervision activities individually and in collaboration with national and county MOH stakeholders.
- Business Development Identify new program opportunities through rapid assessments and proposal development inputs and writing as needed.
- Provide technical support in the development and writing of new concepts and proposals for fundraising.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Work closely with the M&E officer in provision of periodic updates highlighting progress, lessons learnt and bottlenecks.
- Provide technical guidance on SBCC in needs assessment and surveys
- Regularly assess and provide feedback and recommendations on the quality of SBCC programmes and interventions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Public Health, Nursing or any other related field
Required Experience
Essential
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience
- Knowledge, training and experience in WASH and community SBCC
- Previous experience working in Turkana County is an asset
- Knowledge on and experience working through Community Health structure
- Demonstrated skills in program planning, implementation and monitoring
- Demonstrated skills in peer group training, Training of Trainers and development of training materials
- Proficiency in spoken and written English and Swahili
- Strong computer and interpersonal skills
