    Community Health Outreach Volunteers

    Community Health Outreach Volunteers work within governmental health clinics, national non-governmental organizations, or community-based organizations. Volunteers play the role of co-facilitator, mentor, educator, and catalyst for the institutions they support to improve health outcomes in communities throughout the country. However, more than the skills they offer, the most successful Volunteers in Kenya are patient, flexible, and have a passion for serving others. All Health Volunteers will work in three focus areas:

    • HIV/AIDS Prevention
    • Maternal and Child Health (MNCH)
    • Capacity Building and Support to Community
    • Health Volunteers (CHV)

    As a Health Volunteer, you may be involved in the following types of activities in a typical work day:

    • Co-train and support community-based health organizations that advocate for positive social behavior change through on diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS, which are national top priorities.
    • Co-facilitate evidence-based interventions that promote positive health outcomes on issues that relate to the project focus area such as safe-motherhood, neonatal, and child health.
    • Collaborate with the traditional and local leadership to conduct needs assessments, identify community public health challenges, and find local solutions.
    • You will work with CHVs or local NGO partners, and your work schedule will vary from that of a typical “business” work day. You will have a less formal schedule with activities occurring during a variety of days, times, and locations in the community. Meetings and activities can happen on any day of the week and some days, you may have no formal work activities and will be free to work on secondary projects. You will also have opportunities to work in schools and with out-of-school youth and support health education activities.

    Peace Corps Kenya partners with community counterparts to promote gender awareness and girls’ education and empowerment. You will receive training on gender challenges in Kenya and you will have the opportunity to co-implement gender-related activities that are contextually and culturally appropriate. You will look for ways to work with community members to co-promote gender-equitable norms and co-facilitate empowerment programs designed to support both girls and boys that to explore a new paradigm together.

    Required Skills

    • Qualified applicants will have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline and have an expressed interest in working in the health sector, mainly in rural areas (villages) and semi-urban areas with under-resourced communities.

    Desired Skills

    Competitive candidates will have one or more of the following:

    • BA/BS in Nutrition, Health, Nursing or Dietetics
    • MA/MS in Public Health (MPH)
    • Certified Physician's Assistant with interest in public/community health
    • RN, LPN, LVN Nursing Degree or Diploma, or other post-grad health/medical degree with interest in community health
    • Prior experience or interest in working in the areas of:
    • Maternal & Child Health
    • HIV/AIDS prevention
    • Nutrition
    • Volunteer or work experience in a health related field; i.e. HIV/AIDS outreach; COVID-19 response; sexual education; contraception or family planning counseling.
    • Experience with youth development, particularly life skills development, promotion of healthy lifestyles, camps, youth clubs, scouts, etc. Candidates should be prepared to cope with cultural differences and engage in discussions for positive change

    Secondary Education Math Teacher

    Peace Corps Volunteers’ work will complement and support the Government of Kenya (GoK) efforts from the grassroots level by addressing secondary school teacher shortages in math/science subjects, supporting ICT integration efforts in education, collaboratively promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, codevelopment of teaching and learning materials, promotion of gender equity and inclusion, and supporting cocurricular activities including career guidance, HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, and life skills trainings.

    However, more than the skills they bring, the most successful Volunteers in Kenya are patient, flexible, and have a passion for serving/supporting others. All STEM Volunteers will work collaboratively with local counterparts in four focus areas:

    • Build teacher capacity through Communities of Practice
    • Increase student skills in STEM through direct classroom teaching
    • Promote increased community involvement to support school activities
    • Codevelop materials and increase access to materials/resources to support a STEM approach to math and science

    As with all Peace Corps programs, flexibility and a positive attitude will be important for this project. Volunteers may be asked by counterparts to provide instruction on a variety of subjects aside from the one they have been invited to teach. Volunteers will coteach in the classroom and support activities to collaboratively build capacity among with counterparts and coteachers. Activities might include the broader community with things like math competitions, math fairs, camps and clubs, and school improvement projects. Along with classroom teaching, many Volunteers get involved supporting school clubs, sports, youth conferences, and other extracurricular activities. Education Volunteers also work with counterparts to integrate HIV/AIDS, malaria, and gender equality work into their teaching and community development activities in a culturally effective and appropriate manner.

    Corporal punishment is illegal in Kenya. While the government has regulations regarding corporal punishment, these rules are not always followed or enforced at the local level. Volunteers may encounter different levels of corporal punishment. Many Volunteers find this challenging, particularly when it is necessary to develop good working relationships with colleagues in the classroom. Peace Corps Kenya encourages open dialogue between Volunteers and their colleagues, and exploring culturally appropriate and acceptable alternatives to corporal punishment. You will receive training and resources on how best to manage situations of corporal punishment in the classroom, using the Safe School curriculum.

    Peace Corps Kenya promotes gender awareness and girls’ education and empowerment. You will receive training on gender challenges in Kenya and you will have the opportunity to work with your counterparts to coimplement genderrelated activities that are contextually appropriate. During your service, you are encouraged to work with community members to promote genderequitable norms and increase girls’ sense of agency. As part of your work, you will also report on these efforts and their impact.

    Required Skills

    Competitive candidates will have one or more of the following criteria:

    • Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in math
    • Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline with secondary certification in math
    • Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in Math, Engineering, or Computer Science
    • Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline with a minor or equivalent (15 semester/22 quarter hours) in math

    Desired Skills

    Most successful candidates will have one or more of the following relevant qualifications and qualities:

    • Prior teaching experience
    • Ability to teach large classes (50+ students)
    • Experience designing educational content
    • Ability to adapt and use different classroom management techniques
    • Experience in school and/or community presentations with children, youth or adult learners
    • Interest and/or familiarity with HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention
    • Must have interest or skills working with primary or secondary school age children
    • Experience with graphic design, T.V. captioning, filming, editing or creativity in developing HIV/AIDS educational materials

    Deaf Educator

    Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) will support teachers to increase knowledge and transfer innovative and effective techniques and methods for teaching reading and early literacy skills, and KSL. Volunteers will work collaboratively with teachers to support students to increase literacy levels and support the development of teaching and learning materials and resources required to provide highquality literacy instruction. Finally, Volunteers will collaborate with parents and community members to promote E4D and KSL, encourage children’s literacy, and to promote a reading culture within the community. All E4D Volunteers will work in four focus areas:

    • Support building the capacity of teachers in general, literacy, numeracy, KSL, and genderequitable practices in the classroom
    • Support students’ in strengthening KSL, literacy and/or numeracy skills
    • Support families and caregivers to strengthen support for Deaf students’ access to learning
    • Support students’ and teachers’ to increase access to adapted teaching/learning materials and resources to support E4D

    Volunteers may be asked to teach a variety of subjects aside from the one which they were invited to teach. Volunteers will coteach in the classroom and cofacilitate activities to build capacity among their counterparts and coteachers.     •  Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education (general or with emphasis on deaf or hard of hearing)
    •  Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline with state certification in special education (general or with emphasis on deaf or hard of hearing)
    •  Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a minimum of six months experience working with persons with disabilities or who are deaf or hard of hearing.
    •  Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline with a minimum of one year of experience working in classrooms or residential homes with persons with disabilities or who are deaf or hard of hearing.

    Desired Skills

    Most successful candidates will have one or more of the following relevant qualifications and qualities:

    • A willingness and commitment to learn and use Kenyan Sign Language (KSL)
    • Prior teaching experience
    • Ability to teach large classes (50+ students)
    • Experience designing educational content
    • Ability to adapt and use different classroom management techniques
    • Familiarity with American Sign Language
    • Classroom experience teaching deaf children or youth
    • Experience in school and/or community presentations with children, youth, or adult learners
    • Interest and/or familiarity with HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention
    • Interest or experience working with primary and/or secondary school age children
    • Experience with graphic design, T.V. captioning, filming, editing or creativity in developing HIV/AIDS educational materials
