    Global Environmental Outlook (GEO) Consultant

    • The Branch is now recruiting an international home-based consultant based in Kenya to support the GEO Secretariat with the production of the GEO-7 report and the coordination of the Ad-hoc Global Assessments Dialogue. Successfully coordinate various chapters of the GEO-7 assessment.
    • Successfully support the processes for the development of the GEO-7 report.
    • Effectively support the development and implementation of Supporting Services for GEO-7.
    • Coordinate selected collaborating centers to sustain long term outreach and engagement.
    • Coordinate the participation of GEO-7 fellows in the GEO-7 process.
    • Plan and execute outreach activities related to the GEO-7 messages and key outcomes to Member States and stakeholders.
    • Support the GEO process in the planning and organization of technical meetings, workshops, and stakeholder consultations. · Liaise and provide support to groups of experts in the development process of the GEO-7.
    • Successfully support the coordination of the Ad-hoc Global Assessment Dialogue.
    • Research, analyze and present information on environmental issues gathered from diverse sources. Prepare various written outputs, e.g. outcomes documents, background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
    • Participate in field missions, including provision of guidance to external teams, government officials and other parties as well as drafting mission summaries, etc., as applicable.
    • Assist in the production of other environmental assessment reports and summaries in the unit as directed by the supervisor.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • The applicant must have a degree in a field related to sustainable development, environmental science, social science or a similar related field.
    • A Masters-level degree in the above fields is required.
    • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience at the international level in project or programme management and implementation, monitoring and reporting and administration or related areas is required.
    • Experience in supporting the coordination of global environmental assessments, including the coordination of external experts and preparing various written outputs such as outcomes documents and background papers is required.
    • Experience in inter-agency coordination and organization of high-level events, as well as the demonstrated ability to interact with and present to high-level officials, are desirable. Demonstrated familiarity with the UN system, its rules and regulations is required.
    • A demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes the willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views is required.
    • Must be able to work with minimum supervision, while being an integral part of a team involving members of staff from a wide range of cultures and disciplines.

    Intern Partnership Unit

     The intern/s will:

    • Assist in the preparation of training materials, workshop materials, templates, and presentations.
    • Assist in the development of Standard Operating Procedures and related infographics and visual aids.
    • Support in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation, and support of computer application systems for Partnerships; independently liaises with users to define and specify requirements.
    • Supports the preparation of technical and user documentation for deployed computer application systems, as well as training materials.
    • Research, compile, analyse, summarize, and present basic information/data on specific programmes/projects, corporate policies and related topics, using various sources (e.g. computer assisted searches using the internet, intranet or other databases).
    • Support the monitoring and evaluation of corporate projects; categorize, update, track, and analyse data related to programmes/projects, e.g. accounting records, outputs, resources utilized, deviations/revisions, etc.
    • Prepare, maintain, and update files (electronic and paper) and internal databases.
    • Assist in the maintenance of a body of reference files, both paper and electronic, to ensure rapid retrieval of critical information; conduct reference searches upon request; participate in initiatives to enhance existing systems for records management and retrieval, including development of proposals for consideration.
    • Provide support in processing partnerships workflows.
    • Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, and training sessions, including logistical arrangements and documentation.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in computer science, business administration, social sciences, or related disciplines Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

    Finance Assistant

    Responsibilities

    • Generate budgetary or financing reports, including statistical/financial data on tables, charts and spreadsheets using office software and templates.
    • Monitor all obligating documents (Funds commitment, Travel Requests, Purchase Orders) and make payments against them.
    • Assist in creation of donor reports against approved projects, grants and donor agreements.
    • Assist in monitoring of donor agreement milestones to ensure that the appropriate reports are generated on timely basis.
    • Maintain regular contact with other relevant Units and external stakeholders to clarify issues which concern financial and budget management.
    • Perform any other duties as may be required.

    Education

    • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent is required.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in finance, budget, accounting, administrative services or related area is required.
    • The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to one (1) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.
    • Experience working with Microsoft Office packages such as Ms Excel and Ms Word is required. Experience assisting with programme planning and/or budgeting and reporting is required.
    • Experience working within the United Nations common system or a similar international organization is desirable. A minimum of one (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

    Communication and Advocacy Consultant

    Duties & responsibilities

    • Provide expertise in developing clear, concise, and descriptive communication materials that convey the Division's content to and for senior management in raising the organization's profile on nature, biodiversity and ecosystems in general, including but not limited to: Prepare and review briefing notes, full speeches, key speaking points, publication forewords, media articles, and preparation for media interviews at short notice.
    • Analytical review, development and/or compiling of substantive messages, etc. for the Division Director in addition to Senior Management requests that come to the Division, working with the technical and policy experts in the Branches like an investigative journalist on the different priority themes, to ensure that the messaging is clear and in line with the Division and UNEP's overall priorities.
    • Strategic engagement plan for the division: Oversee the planning and delivery of Divisional related input for key events within the organization and make sure that the Division is prepared in advance for report launches, key policy events and dates in the UNEP calendar of events and overall UN calendar.
    • Identify key events and moments for advocacy and communication activities, ensuring that the Director has readily available highlights that enhance the visibility of the Division's lead role within the context of the organisation's goals and priorities as outlined in the Medium-Term Strategy as well as other initiatives with high visibility on issues such as the UN Decade on Ecosystems restoration and other key agendas for the division. o Provide social media expertise to the Division: This includes creating a content calendar and drafting social media assets as needed to capture audience interest
    • Provide advocacy coordination across the division at key moments, including the new MTS.
    • Map, assess and store current briefs: Provide communication expertise in seeking to assess the state of the current briefs, identify gaps to be filled.
    • Advocacy outreach: Where appropriate, to turn briefings into proactive advocacy outreach in liaison with other colleagues on communication and advocacy in the different Branches and Units in the Division for corporate and internal requirements.
    • Reactive and opportunistic to news and events: Keep abreast of the news / policy agenda and recommend how UNEP's perspectives could have traction in key global debates.
    • Compile a short media review of major trends and opportunities (based on a review of UNEP media alerts).

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Communications, International Relations, Political Science or Development Studies; or a related field is required.
    • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
    • Minimum five years of work experience in communication or related fields is required.
    • Experience in preparing communication and advocacy related materials in an international organizational setting is desirable. Knowledge and expertise in high-level environment and sustainable development issues is desirable.

    Knowledge Management and Collective Intelligence Expert

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Under the supervision of the Head of the Collective Intelligence Unit, the Knowledge Management and Collective Intelligence Expert will: Provide Legal expertise to the development of knowledge tools of the Environmental Governance Sub-programme including the further development/refinement of legal toolkits and other content on the UNEP-LEAP Montevideo V Programme website, and facilitate the further development and expansion to stakeholders of the Negotiator’s Toolkit and Global Goals sections of the InforMEA platform.
    • Provide Legal and Taxonomic expertise to support Semantic indexing and retrieval on InforMEA, LEAP and other related platforms, and for the conversion, tagging and presentation of Akomo Ntoso/machine-readable content.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • An advanced university degree (master’s degree, or equivalent) in international environmental law is required. A first-level university degree in Law combined with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • A minimum of 10 years of progressive working experience in Law, including Legal analysis, research and writing, is required.
    • Experience at the international level, including with the United Nations system organizations is desirable.
    • Excellent Taxonomy development and legal curation experience is required. This includes direct working experience in the development of specialist online tools and guides for policy makers and other key environmental law stakeholders, plus the effective presentation and tagging/indexing of online legislation and other datasets.

    Climate Finance Expert

    Deliverables.

    • Inception report including a clear workplan and timeline and detailing the approach, methodology (including specific data collection tool) that will be followed to deliver the ToRs (in English) together with a list of stakeholders to be contacted and involved and a mission plan if necessary.
    • A scoping report highlighting the best options to unlock private sector finance for EbA through the insurance sector, private investors for ecosystem services and credit for climate resilient livelihoods and enterprises including key recommendations on how to refine project related activities, ToC and sustainability section.
    • Recommendations could be presented under a matrix of financing mechanisms (RISCO, trust fund, MEBA etc) with an evaluation of appropriateness of each and also how/whether they overlap and if the recommendation is to consider more than one – why and implementation modalities including ‘soft’ agreements with partners.
    • A clear strategy to secure sustainable sources of innovative finance to ensure long term protection and continued restoration of mangrove and other key ecosystems for climate change adaptation through private sector finance and innovative mechanisms/partnerships integrated in the full proposal. This could include, among others, clear recommendations of business model, and/or implementing partners, definition of payment/income streams, costs and activity plan for implementing models as relevant. 

    Qualifications/special skills

    • A master's degree in business administration, management, economics or related field is required.
    • 5 years of progressively responsible experience and track record of experience for the following, preferably for projects in areas related to climate change adaptation is required.
    • At least one previous professional positions/ assignments related to government planning processes is desirable. Working with agriculture value chains and smallholder farmers, particularly to put in place climate resilient agricultural practices is desirable.
    • Design of financing models and underlying business cases for smallholder famers to access finance, including linking value chains to offtake agreements is desirable. Scoping of partnerships with private sector intermediaries, entities and investors for blended finance approaches in the agriculture sector is desirable.

    Programme Management Officer

    Responsibilities

    • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects.
    • Monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.

    Education

    • Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in environmental science, environmental health, economics, social science, international relations or related area is required.
    • A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in environment, project or programme management, administration or related area is required.
    • Experience in developing global tools for programme implementation in the areas of capacity building or normative work is required.
    • Experience working for a senior management level officer is desirable. Work experience at the UN or similar organization is desirable.
    • Experience with agile software development management methodologies and tools is desirable. Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
