    Writer/Reporter

    We are seeking an experienced Writer/Reporter to join our team at Briter Bridges. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in long-form writing and analysis, particularly in the areas of business, investment, business models, and macroeconomic and political contexts, with a specific focus on Africa and emerging markets.

    Long-form reporting and analysis:

    • Produce high-quality, in-depth long-form articles and analyses covering a range of topics related to business, investment, and economic developments in Africa and other emerging markets.
    • Conduct thorough research to provide insightful and well-reasoned perspectives on various subjects.
    • Embrace a “slow news” approach, allowing for thorough research, comprehensive analysis, and engaging storytelling.
    • Business cases and stories
    • Carry out interviews with entrepreneurs, investors, and businesses and write business cases and stories that can serve as empirical evidence for industry-focused articles.

    Expertise in Africa and emerging markets:

    • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the economic, political, and social landscape of Africa and other emerging markets.
    • Stay updated on relevant industry trends, policy changes, and geopolitical events that may impact businesses and investments.

    Business and investment analysis:

    • Analyse businesses, investment opportunities, and economic models to provide our audience with valuable insights and recommendations.
    • Identify key trends and developments that shape the investment landscape in the regions of focus.

    Macroeconomic and political contexts:

    • Monitor and analyse macroeconomic indicators and political developments to contextualise and enrich reporting.
    • Provide informed commentary on how these factors influence business and investment environments.
    • Data analysis and utilisation of resources:
    • Utilise relevant data sources and analytical tools to support reporting and analysis.
    • Collaborate with data teams and leverage quantitative insights to enhance the depth of reporting.

    We are looking for someone with:

    • Proven experience as a Writer / Reporter on Africa and emerging markets.
    • Expertise writing on agriculture, food, cleantech, climatetech, renewables, or related subjects. The role will be heavily focused on agtech, foodtech, climatetech, and auxiliary sectors.
    • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to synthesise complex information into clear and compelling narratives.
    • A degree related to journalism, data journalism, economics, literature, engineering, sociology, development studies, and work experience working in areas related to technology and private sector development across emerging markets, business, research, socio-economic development, impact evaluation, economics, and impact finance;
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
    • Strong track record and brands worked with.
    • Ease carrying out primary and secondary (quantitative and qualitative) data collection, including surveys, automation, and interviews;
    • Proficiency with software such as Google Suite, MS Office, pivot tables, data entry and database maintenance in Excel/Google Sheets.
    • Extreme attention to detail;
    • A self-starter willing to take initiative and ownership of tasks, and with a genuine interest in business, socio-economic development investment, startups, technology, and private sector development.

    • Specialised industry knowledge (e.g. fintech, agriculture, renewables commerce, technology, impact, etc.);
    • Visual tools such as Adobe products (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop); Figma;

    • Knowledge of a second language spoken in key countries, such as Arabic, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Mandarin, Hindi, etc.;

    Data Manager

    We are looking for a highly skilled Data Manager who will sit between Data Lead and the Research and Data Analysts, to oversee the end-to-end data processes and team, ensuring that Briter Bridges’ databases are sound, the resources are efficiently managed, and contributing to the development of key data-driven products and services. The ideal candidate will have experience in areas including data analysis, consulting, data science, data engineering, team management, as well as product development. They will work closely with the Product, Engagement, Data and Research teams to drive data-driven decisions, contribute to product roadmaps, and ensure the seamless integration of data across the organisation.

    Core responsibilities:

    • Database development: Work closely with the Data Lead to ensure the design, development, maintenance, efficiency and scalability of Briter Bridges’ databases. Oversee the design, development, and implementation of robust databases, ensuring the availability, consistency, and reliability of data for internal and external products.
    • Team management: Oversee the data team during collection, analysis, and reporting for Briter Bridges’ flagship work and client deliverables. Support the data analysts, ensuring all projects are delivered on time and meet quality standards.
    • Collection, analysis, visualisation, storytelling: Conduct data collection and analysis and produce strong, digestible, actionable data-driven insights for clients and flagship research.
    • Strategic alignment: upport the Data Lead in ensuring the data strategy aligns with business goals and client needs. Collaborate with the Managing Director, Director of Strategy and the senior leadership to ensure data strategy aligns with Briter Bridges’ business goals.
    • Data-Product consistency: Work with the Product Team to maintain and refine databases and their integration with Briter Bridges’ intelligence platform, as well as affiliated platforms.
    • Innovation: Work closely with the Data Lead, Product Team, and Data Analysts to drive automation of data processes and explore innovative methods for data collection, analysis, visualisation, and overall optimisation, including the use of automation and AI tools.
    • Training: Lead the training and development of the data team, as well as external contractors.
    • Reporting: Report directly to the Managing Director and Director of Strategy and collaborate with senior leadership to ensure data strategy aligns with Briter Bridges’ business goals.

    We are looking for someone with:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. A master’s degree or relevant certifications are a plus.
    • 4+ years of experience in data management, data analysis, consulting, or data engineering, with a focus on product development and data infrastructure.
    • Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring teams, with excellent management and leadership skills.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex data insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Experience working in both internal facing and external facing roles, specifically with high-calibre clients in the development, government, or private sectors.
    • Experience working in Africa and/or other emerging markets.
    • Familiarity with data visualisation tools such as Power BI, Google Looker Studio, Tableau, Flourish, and custom dashboards development.
    • Programming skills in Python, SQL, or R, with a deep understanding of data engineering frameworks and tools.
