    Data Systems Associate

    About The Team
     
    Field Ops is the heart-center of operations at Komaza. We are deeply systems-oriented and enjoy the challenge of training and managing hundreds of new teammates each season. In order to plant tree farms with thousands of new farmers every year, we are laser-focused on hitting our key performance indicators. We thrive on data, and technology is playing an ever-increasing role in our day-to-day work life.
     
    About This Role
     
    Data is critical to everything Field Ops does – from where we plant, to how we manage farms, to when we harvest, to how we manage the performance of front-line staff. The Field Operations Data Associate will leverage data to allow our large, decentralized field team to effectively serve thousands of farmers and grow millions of trees. You will also lead the design and execution of Komazas logistics systems to deliver millions of tree seedlings to thousands of farmers throughout Kenya.

    What You Will Do

    • Design, build and continuously improve the farm and farmer data collection systems to support front-line, operational and strategic planning and decision-making
    • Manage processes and people to validate, store, analyze and report all farm and farmer data for tens of thousands of Komaza tree farms
    • Leverage GIS data and spatial analysis to make concise, evidence-based recommendations to the senior leadership team for key operational decisions
    • Liaise with the Technology Development team to design, pilot and scale mobile applications that support data collection and work planning with decentralized field operations teams
    • Develop the inventory management and logistics systems for delivering 2.5 million tree seedlings to rural farmers in coastal Kenya

    What You Have

    • Bachelors degree required
    • ArcGIS or similar software a plus but not mandatory
    • Passion for Komazas mission to lift rural farmers out of poverty through the rapid scaling of our microforestry model
    • Strong organisational, critical thinking, and communications skills with impeccable spoken and written English

    Farmer Design Associate

    About the Team
     
    The Komaza Farmer Relations team is a marketing and communications center explicitly devoted to our farmer-facing activities. Our core focus is helping farmers to understand who we are, what a social enterprise is, and how they can benefit from growing trees with Komaza. From farmer enrollment to farmer payments, we leverage ethnography, interviews, and focus groups to listen to farmers wants and needs, then develop the materials and communications plan to help them understand what to expect from our partnership.
     
    About the Role
     
    As a Komaza Farmer Design Associate, youll travel across our field areas in Coastal Kenya to learn from the communities we work with. You will work with multidisciplinary teams and use research findings to inform and inspire strategic decisions and design operational systems. Youll translate research insights into SOPs, trainings, tools, communication materials, and practical field tactics.
     
    About You
     
    You love observing people to uncover their deep needs and values. You have equal facility interviewing farmers to understand what their lives are about and interacting with staff to help them better articulate their challenges. You have a curious mind and naturally make connections between diverse populations and industries. You draw upon both qualitative and quantitative data to inform decision making. You can translate that range of data and blue sky ideas into concrete SOPs, trainings, project plans, data tools, and similar deliverables.

    What You Will Do

    • Build and lead cross-departmental design and execution teams
    • Conduct qualitative and quantitative primary research to better tailor our system to serve our farmers
    • Spend long, exciting and exhausting hours traveling around our field areas via public transportation and meeting with farmers in rural (hot!) environments
    • Lead synthesis of data into key insights and opportunity areas, then building scalable business systems
    • Take an iterative approach to prototyping and testing new services and communication materials in partnership with other teams

    What You Will Have

    • Undergraduate degree required; Master’s degree preferred
    • Empathy and a passion for understanding people, and experience with user research/fieldwork
    • Experience as a qualitative researcher who is familiar with a variety of methodologies including conducting 1:1 interviews, moderating group conversations, running live prototype sessions, or engaging with users remotely
    • Experience with quantitative research and a genuine passion for data, and you either designed surveys or analyzed data; experience using SPSS (or similar software) and running segmentation studies is a plus
    • 2-5 years experience at startups, consulting or other professional services firms
    • Deep interest and experience conducting ethnography with rural populations
    • Comfort designing in an ambiguous work environment
    • Passion for Komazas mission to lift rural farmers out of poverty through the rapid scaling of our microforestry model
    • Familiarity and experience with the communities where we plant; you have lived or worked in rural low-income communities
    • Strong organisational, critical thinking, and communications skills with impeccable spoken and written English

    Corporate Finance Associate

    About The Team
     
    Komaza is entering a phase of rapid growth and will soon expand into new geographies. While the Komaza Model of smallholder forestry has proven its potential, Komaza also needs to adopt lean financing strategies that integrate various tools to support the companys growth. As Komaza is positioned at the linkage of impact investing, timberland investing, and climate financing, our team is responsible for creating effective blended-financing strategies to tap hundreds of billions dollars invested across these industries. In addition to conventional fundraising through debt, equity, and grant, the team is currently developing a new type of investment product for sustainable tree financing, partnering with the worlds largest financial institutions.
     
    About This Role
     
    The Corporate Finance Associate will lead fundraising-related projects at Komaza by conducting analyses, developing financial models, and administering investor communication to support rapid company growth. Bridging the vast management agenda and the day-to-day operations across Komazas value chain, Corporate Finance Associate will tackle a wide variety of challenges that determine Komazas financial capacity as well as long term management vision. The Corporate Finance Associate will report directly to the Corporate Finance Manager and work closely with the CEO.

    What You Will Do

    • Conducting financial and business strategy analyses across Komazas value chain to support management decision making
    • Design and develop corporate management metrics and financial models to improve growth management, corporate governance, and investor reporting
    • Design, build and continuously improve communication systems with investors throughout due diligence, investor reporting and output delivery
    • Facilitate Komazas fundraising activities by coordinating with relevant teams and departments to engage with investors and other relevant actors
    • Create reporting tools and systems based on deep understanding of user needs within functions and across departments and levels to respond to investors information requests
    • Launch new systems through documenting SOPs, developing and conducting trainings, and monitoring integration into operations, with an eye towards future improvements

    What You Have

    • Bachelors degree in a relevant field
    • Minimum 2 years of professional experience in management consulting, corporate strategy, investment banking, or financial analysis/advisory
    • Project management and coordination skills for concurrent, complex projects
    • Lean and resilient startup mindset to conduct complicated analyses and system building with limited resources
    • Strong experience in systems mapping and iterative experimentation
    • Concept and strategy thinking skills to draw new vision out of fact/data-based business analysis
