The BBC World Service remains the leading international broadcaster in Africa, reaching a weekly audience of more than 100 million across all platforms and Social Media.
Three of the new language services, Amharic, Afaan Oromo and Tigrinya will serve our audiences in Ethiopia and Eritrea. They will be based in Nairobi from where the BBC produces programmes for Kiswahili and Somali speaking audiences.
The BBC is looking for a team of excellent journalists to deliver a dynamic range of digital and radio content which will appeal to a young audience.
As a Journalist with the Tigrinya team, you will create content to maximise the BBC World Service’s impact and potential in Africa. The role will involve researching, interviewing original sources and writing reports, for the BBC Tigrinya’s website in a range of formats. As well as being the first to respond to breaking news stories, you will help to produce and/or present the BBC’s live radio programme and create original and creative content to drive the BBC Facebook page and other social media platforms.
The ideal candidate will have recent and relevant experience as a journalist/reporter and have a full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Tigrinya with a good knowledge of English, both written and spoken. You will be able to create original content with the ability to write, adapt and translate with accuracy, clarity and style for differing audiences and forms of social media. Experience of reporting, in the field, on political and economic issues would be beneficial

Working with other members of the Amharic and Horn of Africa teams, the Video Journalist will identify and produce creative and innovative video news content. You will research, storyboard and produce stories, creating headlines and video teasers to promote stories and reach as wide an audience as possible. You will show visual creativity in the use of pictures and graphics to illustrate and explain fast-moving events and complex stories, understanding the video requirements of different social platforms.
You’re a creative and versatile journalist, with a strong understanding of what makes good digital video and how video is consumed on digital platforms. We’re looking for a journalist who is passionate about digital video storytelling. As the digital landscape is changing you will need to be nimble with technology. You’ll be leading the digital video effort and you need to be able to produce content that works for digital platforms.
Sound editorial judgement, a good understanding of Africa’s news agenda, in particular the Horn of Africa region will be an advantage.
