    Senior Full Stack Engineer

    Job Location: Preference for Nairobi but also open to other locations

    Reporting to: Head of Software Engineering

    Background and Position Description:

    As a Senior Full Stack Engineer you will be responsible for a software ecosystem that is providing hundreds of thousands of homes with the ability to pay for solar power and light for the first time. You will be comfortable bridging backend, frontend and quality requirements and communicating with technical and non-technical resources of all types.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Design and build advanced applications for the PayGo business.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features.
    • Work with outside data sources and APIs.
    • Unit-test code for robustness, including edge cases, usability, and general reliability.
    • Work on bug fixing and improving application performance.
    • Continuously discover, evaluate, and implement new technologies to maximize development efficiency.

    Desired Skills and Experience:

    • Extensive work experience in a fintech setting handling mobile money integrations, SMS, USSD and other Telco-grade integrations.
    • Minimum of 5-8 years Java/Python/Scala/Object Oriented and JS web development experience.
    • Expert level object-oriented programming with a firm grasp of design patterns.
    • A passion for staying on top of industry trends and technologies.
    • Expert level knowledge of HTML, CSS, JSON, Angular and Javascript.
    • Deep knowledge of Javascript practices and commonly used modules based on extensive work experience.
    • Extensive experience with relational databases (PostGres, Mysql).
    • Experience optimizing and refactoring application code.
    • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills with experience exercising mature judgment.
    • Creating self-contained, reusable, and testable modules and components.
    • Writing extensive unit tests using automated TDD tasks.
    • A desire to be personally responsible for production-level code.
    • Deep knowledge of version control and paradigms around it such as gitflow.
    • Writing non-blocking code, and resorting to advanced techniques such as multithreading, when needed.
    • Experience with DevOps environment and tools including CI/CD, test automation, release management.
    • Experience with cloud environment apps (AWS, Google, etc).
    • Large scale web development experience for performance, stability, reliability, and scale.
    • Experience with product management tools and software, prior experience with Atlassian is an advantage.
    • An ability to describe technical details to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.

    Frontend Engineer

    Job Location: Preference for Nairobi but also open to other locations

    Reporting to: Head of Software Engineering

    Background and Position Description:

    As a Senior Frontend Engineer you enjoy making beautiful user interfaces. You have strong opinions based on experience on which frameworks to work on and you know which mistakes to avoid. Good UX design is something you live by and you have the right mind to decide when to use additional tools and frameworks and when to work with vanilla JS. You’ll be the lead developer for our main client-facing portal. With customers distributed around several geographies and languages, your work will have immediate impact. You will A/B test impactful features that will improve key engagement metrics and delight our end users. Whether it is having a tailored layout for dumb phones on Opera Mini, or inferring a reader’s language/locale based on their location, you will be pivotal in discovering what moves the needle. You will own our frontend code base and will be responsible for elegantly structuring and evolving the project.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Building scalable and highly usable frontend applications using either or Angular, React, VueJS and Vanilla JS as well as other modern libraries and frameworks.
    • Implement High fidelity mocks and bring them to life.
    • Designing interfaces which help to solve to the many real world problems we face.
    • Help more junior engineers to get up to speed.
    • Support in taking correct technology decisions.

    Desired Skills and Experience:

    • Good understanding of ES6.

    Background and Position Description:

    As a Backend Engineer you enjoy building functional and robust systems. You are energized by working with and supporting developers, designers and other cross-functional team members alike. You enjoy collaborating in small, fast-moving product teams varying from startup environments to enterprise.

    You have worked with Relational and non-relational database systems, and extensively worked on APIs (consuming from external sources and also building to serve 3rd parties and other applications).

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Minimum of 3-5 years Java/Python/Scala/Object Oriented and JS web development experience.
    • Expert Level object-oriented programming with a firm grasp of design patterns.
    • A passion for staying on top of industry trends and technologies.
