    Human Resources Assistant

    Position Summary

    The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is recruiting for the position of Human Resources Assistant to be based at its office in Nairobi, Kenya. The position will provide administrative and operational support within the Human Resources Unit and frontline customer service to all CIAT staff who require access to services within the Human Resource Unit.

    Main Responsibilities:

    • Participate in recruitment, selection and onboarding process including review of job descriptions, advertisements, screening of applications, interview, reference-checks and staff induction.
    • Contracts management: Track employee and student contracts ensuring adequate notice is provided for renewals and non-renewals.
    • Support management of staff transfers, exit and separation processes and update staff/dependant records accordingly.
    • Support talent management functions, e.g. performance management, training and development.
    • Participate in analysis of compensation data.
    • Manage staff records both in physical files and electronically and maintain confidentiality.
    • Participate in management of staff welfare schemes and initiatives.

    Application Developer for IITA

    Project Information:

    ACAI is a 5 year project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The project is structured around the delivery of appropriate and affordable technologies to sustainably improve cassava productivity in the short and long term in these countries. Working with scientists in the national systems, the private sector, and other development partners in the various countries where the project is implemented, ACAI aims to improve cassava yields, cassava root quality, cassava supply to the processing sector, and fertilizer sales and through these processes engage at least 100,000 households and create a value of at least 27 million USD within the 5-year timeframe of the project in Nigeria and Tanzania.
    To achieve this objective, the project is formulated around the following six agronomy-related use cases:

    • a site-specific fertilizer recommendation decision support tool which targets nutrient management advice based on local soil conditions and crop calendars;
    • a cassava fertilizer blending decision support tool which advises on appropriate fertilizer blends for cassava production based on soil fertility conditions, cost of input and potential demand;a best planting practice decision support tool which guides farmers in choosing best-suited planting practices for cassava;
    • a cassava intercropping decision support tool which recommends intensification options in cassava-based intercropping systems;
    • a cassava scheduled planting decision support tool which provides recommendations on planting and harvesting date to ensure a more continuous supply of fresh cassava roots to the processing industry; and (vi) a decision support tool advising on best agronomic practices for high root starch content at harvest for farmers supplying the processing sector.

    The project is delivering on these use cases through six major Work Streams:

    • research on cassava growth dynamics, nutrient and water requirements and responsiveness to inputs;
    • development of a geo-spatial cassava agronomy information base;
    • production and validation of demand-driven decision support tools for cassava agronomy;
    • facilitation of the use of decision support tools to primary and other development initiatives;
    • capacity development of national institutions to engage in transformative cassava agronomy Research for Development (R4D); and
    • project governance, management, coordination, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (ME&L).

    Position Summary:

    CIAT, on behalf of IITA, is seeking to recruit an Application Developer with the responsibility of administering a cloud-based server, hosting software applications for data collection and data processing for project users. The position is nationally recruited and will be based at IITA Offices in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Recruiting an Application Developer for IITA

    Main duties and responsibilities include:

    • Administer a cloud-based server hosting software applications for data collection and data processing for project users, and information delivery to target end users, with emphasis on deploying and upgrading software, server security, and cloud computing
    • Develop and maintain mobile applications to communicate agronomic recommendations to pilot end users, integrating smartphone apps, USSD and IVR
    • Integrate systems to collect feedback from the application end-users, extract learnings, and automate these processes to communicate results to the project team
    • Interact closely and frequently with teams of scientists and clients to compile, refine, discuss and prioritize application requirements
    • Maintain detailed documentation and develop end-user manuals for all applications developed
    • Contribute to streamlining and maintaining scripts for data processing and prediction engines to deliver recommendations on agronomic technologies, in collaboration with data scientist

    The candidate shall have the following competencies, skills and experience:

    • BSc in information technology, computer science or equivalent
    • At least 2 years of relevant work experience
    • Experience with development of mobile applications, USSD, IVR and SMS is a must.
    • Experience with user authentication, authorization and server security
    • Demonstrated skills in web services development using multiple programming platforms, including HTML, PHP, CSS, Java and JavaScript
    • Knowledge of relational databases (MySQL) and version control tools
    • Knowledge of R and creative design skills is a plus
    • Enjoy coding and troubleshooting, diagnosing problems and identifying structural solutions
    • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties
    • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, good judgement and a high level of respect for confidentiality.
    • Ability to work in a multi‐cultural environment.

    Terms of employment:

    This a nationally recruited position and will be based at the IITA Offices in Nairobi, Kenya. The contract will be for a one-year period, subject to probation period of three (3) months, renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
