    Journalist, BBC Afaan Oromo

    Africa’s media landscape is changing. It is one of the fastest developing news markets in the world with mobile technology transforming lives, internet connectivity increasing, the radio market remaining relatively strong and Television migrating from analogue to digital.

    The BBC World Service remains the leading international broadcaster in Africa, reaching a weekly audience of more than 100 million across all platforms and Social Media.

    Three of the new language services;  Afaan Oromo,  Amharic, and Tigrinya serve our audiences in Ethiopia and Eritrea.  They are based in Nairobi from where the BBC produces programmes for Kiswahili and Somali speaking audiences.

    The BBC Afaan Oromo Service is looking for a journalist for six month fixed term contract, to deliver a dynamic range of digital and radio content which will appeal to a young audience.

    Role Responsibility

    As a Journalist with the Afaan Oromo team, you must be fluent in Afaan Oromo. You will also expect to create content to maximise the BBC World Service’s impact and potential in Africa. The role will involve researching, interviewing original sources and writing reports, for the BBC Afaan Oromo’s website in a range of formats.  As well as being the first to respond to breaking news stories, you will help to produce and/or present the BBC’s live radio programme and create original and creative content to drive the BBC Facebook page and other social media platforms.

    Are you the right candidate?

    The ideal candidate will have recent and relevant experience as a journalist and have a full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Afaan Oromo.  A good knowledge of English, both written and spoken is important.  You will be able to create original content with the ability to write, adapt and translate with accuracy, clarity and style for differing audiences and forms of social media.  Experience of reporting, in the field, on political and economic issues would be advantageous.

    Technical Operator (Sound)

    Job Introduction

    We are looking to recruit a Multi Skilled Technical Operator (sound) to support our objectives in Nairobi.

    Role Responsibility

    You will be required to carry out the necessary planning to ensure that all required facilities and arrangements are available in the gallery and on the studio floor (and where appropriate for outside). Co-ordinate assembly of all material required for programme and be responsible for handling problems encountered with live transmissions, taking account of editorial priorities and availability of Resources. Decide on which equipment is best suited to the editorial “style” sought as well as advising and guiding on story treatments in terms of production values and technical viability.

    Are you the right candidate?

    • Able to communicate in English (written and spoken)
    • Experience of live sound mixing 
    • Experience of working as a technical operator in a live broadcast environment with a range of production genres
    • Sufficient level of audio and colour vision 
    • Rigging, derigging, testing, lining up and troubleshooting experience
    • Ability to operate studio equipment including mics, PA, FB, sound mixing consoles as well as cabling
    • Experience of operating baseband and file based routing and ingest systems
    • Good technical knowledge of digital media standards, codecs and production workflows and their dependencies
    • Good technical knowledge of broadcast systems & infrastructure and studio & OB facilities
