    Web Developer Borderlands Consultancy

    RESPONSIBILITIES  
    Scope of consultancy: The Web Developer is responsible for the design and construction of a website that displays DDG’s knowledge of border security and management issues in the Horn of Africa in an accessible, intuitive fashion. The site design will be consistent with DDG’s home website. The Web Developer will ensure that DDG team members have access to the back end of the site so they can continue to update it after the completion of the consultant’s contract.  
     
    Key tasks:  
    Design the borderlands hub website 
    • The “look” of the website must be consistent with DDG’s own website 
    • The site must present a variety of information in a clear, accessible fashion 
    Build the borderlands hub website 
    • The website is to be built from scratch. It must present information in different categories to be agreed with the DDG project team, including:  
    1. causes and drivers of conflict and insecurity in the borderlands surrounding Kenya 
    2. data visualization of conflict incidence, infrastructure, service points, and natural resources in the areas under investigation 
    3. presence and focus of civil society actors working on borderlands in the region 
    4. community voices 
    5. policy recommendations 
    • The site must integrate at least one interactive GIS map (to be provided by DDG) 
    • Site contents should be editable by DDG staff, ie further research into any of the above categories should be able to be uploaded after the conclusion of the Web Developer’s contract 
    EXPECTED PROFILE OF CONSULTANT 
    Essential: 
    • Educated to degree level in a relevant IT subject 
    • Strong web development skills, with at least two years’ experience of building websites 
    • Comfortable working with different programming languages such as D3.js, Java, Java Script, PHP, SQL 
    • Ability to develop webmaps using different platforms such as Leaflet, Openlayers, Google Maps 
    • Strong graphic design skills 
    • Ability to optimise websites for desktops, tablets and smartphones 
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team 
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision 
    • Fluency in English 
    • Preferable: 
    • Knowledge and understanding of GIS mapping technical processes 
    • Experience in designing infographics 
    • Knowledge of local conflict contexts across eastern Africa (especially Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Somalia) 
    • Based in Nairobi and able to travel to DRC/DDG’s offices for occasional meetings
