    Psychological Officer

    Job Summary

    Reporting to the Lead Psychosocial Officer, the Psychosocial Officer will be responsible for assisting the setting up, management and coordination of a functional Counseling Program targeting the refugee in one of the refugee camp. The officer will have a close working relationship with other project officers, assistants, sector coordinators and managers.

    Responsibilities for the Psychological Officer Job

    • Assist in coordination of counselling activities in the region
    • Assist in coordination of all counseling activities in one camp.
    • Assist in ensuring equal distribution of resources for the counselling unit in one of the camp.
    • Conduct counselling sessions at the blocks, schools, transit center and the counselling drop in center.
    • Send the finance documents to the Lead Psychosocial Officer for her to update the tracking tool
    • Attend the coordination meetings and share the minutes on behalf of the psychosocial unit as assigned by the
    • Lead Psychosocial Officer.
    • Prepare a proper handover before going out of the region which will be copied to the person acting for him or her and the Lead Psychosocial Officer.
    • Assist in Facilitating established and maintaining of referral systems and procedures for clients
    • Refer difficult clients to the Lead Psychosocial Officer.
      Assist in referring clients where clients can receive maximum assistance.
      Within the bracket of confidentiality, encourage information sharing with other CARE sectors and agencies working in Dadaab Refugee Camp.
    • Capacity building of refugee staff in counseling and other psychosocial areas.
    • Conduct training on counseling and other related topics to capacity build and facilitate professionalism among the senior counselor and para counselors.
    • Assist in creating the training manuals and tool to be used in the Psychosocial Unit.
    • Assist in training the community and the humanitarian workers as assigned by the senior psychosocial officer
    • Monitoring and evaluation of the counselling activities
    • Assist in the preparation of weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual work plans for budgeted activities with the
    • Lead Psychosocial Officer within the time line given
    • Assist in preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports on counselling activities with the Lead
    • Psychosocial Officer within the time line given.
    • Maintain high quality counseling services over time and ensure an appropriate level of accountability.
    • Monitor the work of the Senior Para Counsellor and Para Counselors (refugee workers) ensuring they are seeing clients as required.
    • Review the JD of the Senior Para Counsellor, Para Counsellor, cleaner, guards and send the drafts to the Lead Psychosocial Officer for to add her input.
    • Staff supervision
    • Provide supervision to the senior counsellor, para counselors, cleaner and guard (refugee workers) to ensure effective provision of counselling services and maintaining of the psychosocial unit.
    • Ensure that the refugee staff plan their leave days for a whole year by using the leave schedule plan of CARE.
    • Ensure that well documentation of the clients seen, activities conducted by the Senior Para Counselor and Para Counselors (refugee workers) is done according to the counselling principles
    • She/he will be expected to be the officer on duty according to the assigned duties by the Lead Psychosocial Officer

    Qualifications for the Psychological Officer Job

    • Bachelor’s degree in counseling and/or psychology, Masters in the same fields is an added advantage.
    • 3 years hands on experience in counseling
    • Knowledge of gender issues and human rights
    • Working experience in refugee situations will be an added advantage
    • Proficient in Microsoft Suite
    • Good facilitation/training and project report writing skills.
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision
    • Motivated, innovative and possesses outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills and integrity
    • Willing to work in a hardship area.
