    Programme Management Intern

    Org. Setting and Reporting

    The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UNHabitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

    The internship will be located in the Safer Cities Programme, within the Urban Legislation, Land and Governance Branch of UNHabitat. UNHabitat’s work on Safer Cities Programme has continued to develop the Global Network on Safer Cities (GNSC) as a platform for local and national governments as well as non state actors to develop and adopt policies, plans and strategies that strengthen crime and violence prevention and enhance urban safety.

    This is reflected in the activities of several Partnerled Technical Working Groups on Safer Cities and the regional forums for urban safety supporting the development of UN systemwide Guidelines on Safer Cities from various thematic and regional perspectives.

    UNHabitat’s work on Safer Cities Programme approach the following key issues :

    • Foster urban safety through inclusive policies and practices
    • Use innovative measures to accurately understand people’s vulnerabilities
    • Support evidence gathering from small and medium sized towns alongside the larger cities
    • Prioritize securing, not securitizing, urban spaces
    • Think inclusive when it comes to infrastructure
    • Reform policing
    • Ensure displaced people and other migrants are welcomed

    The UNHABITAT Safer Cities Programme, Urban Legislation, Land and Governance Branch,Internship is for 6 months.

    The Internship is UNPAID and fulltime. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

    Responsibilities for the Safer Cities Programme Internship

    • Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
    • Under the direct supervision of the Human Settlement Officer (Safer Cities Programme), the intern:
    • Writing of documents, reports and correspondence for internal use.
    • Desk research (on published documents, internal reports and the internet) on specific issues related to urban safety, design, planning and management of streets and public spaces.
    • Support to and participation in internal and external meetings. This will involve both organizational and substantive tasks, such as preparation of contributions, development of agendas, logistical support and reporting.
    • Assist in pulling together a detailed inventory of tools on urban safety in relation to women and girls safety (50%)
    • Support the documentation of good practices and preparing a detailed inventory of Municipal/City Wide Crime
    • Prevention Strategies and policies (30%)
    • Support the activities of the Global Network on Safer Cities and specifically the preparations of the Steering
    • Committee meeting and the setting up of the Thematic Working Groups (20%)
    • Any other duties

    Qualifications for the Safer Cities Programme Job

    • Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
    • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a oneyear period of graduation.
    • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
    • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
    • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    • Preferred area of study:
      Studies in Urban Planning, Architecture, and Criminology preferred.
    • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

    Languages
    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
