    ILRI - DAAD PhD Graduate fellowship: - Designing integrated strategies for the control of Taenia solium infections in Uganda using a theory of change approach

    Job description

    DAAD is a German Academic Exchange service which is a publicly funded, self-governing organization of the institutions of higher education in Germany. DAAD promotes international academic exchange as well as educational co-operation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programs.

    The Position

    Under the supervision of ILRI scientists, the PhD fellow will develop a theory of change framework with the long-term outcome of reducing the burden of neurocysticercosis in humans in Uganda. The PhD fellow will identify the major underlying assumptions leading to the outcome, synthesize current evidence supporting these assumptions and attempt to close information gaps using participatory tools. The fellow is expected to be based in Kenya with parts of the field work in Uganda

    CGIAR Research Program (CRP) linkage: Agriculture for Nutrition and Health and Livestock

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develop and test a theory of change framework to reduce the burden of neurocysticercosis in humans in Uganda;
    • Develop and defend a PhD proposal;
    • Data collection, analysis and write-up (at least 2 first-authored peer-reviewed journal publications)

    Requirements

    • Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Animal Production systems or related fields
    • Ideally, degree in Agricultural Education and Extension
    • Working experience in independently organize and implement field work, especially with policy makers, field practitioners, farmers and hospital patients
    • Working experience in participatory epidemiology, questionnaire design and systematic literature reviews
    • Experience in survey data entry, validation, management and at least descriptive analysis
    • Independent user of GPS tools and MS Office
    • Previous exposure to R, STATA or SPSS
    • Experience in supervising field staff and administrative experience, e.g. budgeting and record keeping
    • Experience in writing up reports and briefs for a non-technical audience
    • In the possession of a driving license class BCE
    • An effective and energetic team player with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
    • Ability to work independently, multi-task and meet tight deadlines.
    • The applicant must be a citizen of a country in sub-Saharan Africa.
    • The Master’s degree must have been completed less than six years ago at the time of application

    Duration of contract: The period for this project/fellowship will be 3 years, commencing September 2018

    Terms of appointment and stipend: ILRI will offer a competitive stipend to cover living expenses in the project location. The successful candidate will be supervised jointly by an ILRI scientist and the university/academic supervisor.
