Overview of the position:
- Food systems in Somalia have great potential, but currently lack sufficient investment & support to ensure that nutritious food is available & attainable. WFP’s approach focuses on improving local production, storage, processing & fortification, food quality & safety standards & market access to support the availability of nutritious food in Somali markets & build an equitable food system that is more resilient to shocks.
- Domestic fish consumption in Somalia is limited to coastal areas because of poor infrastructure & short shelf life of fresh fish, which has restricted access to fish for a large portion of the population. Shortage of meat experienced particularly during the recurring droughts has diverted some demand towards fish, especially among low income groups like Internally Displaced People (IDP).
- However, Somalia's fisheries sector lacks key equipment & infrastructure & serious limitations in the cold chain compound the problem further.
