    Editor, BBC Somali Service

    We are looking for a top class editor to provide creative leadership and vision, building on the BBC Somali strategy which ensures that the BBC World Service maximises its impact and potential in the target region, taking into account media conditions in the market and developments in audio, video, online and mobile platforms.

    Role Responsibility

    Working with BBC Africa’s senior management team, as Editor you will be responsible for all digital and radio output for the BBC Somali Service, ensuring the highest possible editorial and production standards whilst also making certain that the needs of our audiences are met.  You will lead the digital transformation and modernisation of one of the BBC’s oldest language services. You will be responsible for the day to day management of staff and resources and to maximise the opportunities for effective collaboration, multilingual working and commitment to digital production.  

    As the senior editorial expert on Somali affairs you will distribute content and expertise throughout the BBC and actively support the editorial integration of teams within the BBC Africa Hub. With colleagues in Nairobi, Mogadishu, Hargeisa, London and other African bureaux you’ll help set the agenda for all BBC Africa output and support effective communication between the bureaux and other BBC outlets mainly based in London.

    Are you the right candidate?

    • You must be a creative journalist and inspirational leader with extensive editorial experience of broadcast news and the ability to develop and implement new and innovative approaches to programme structure and content.
    • Proven editorial judgement and flair, able to make sound decisions quickly – including under pressure.
    • A detailed understanding of the latest techniques and technology for newsgathering and production.
    • An ability to use new technologies to create opportunities to enhance output and improve working practices.
    • A transformative leader with the ability to manage and lead teams through change.
    • An ability to communicate on air and off air- to various stakeholders in excellent spoken and written Somali and English.
    • You will have excellent people management skills and have a clear and authoritative communication style. 
    • You must have a thorough and up to date knowledge of news and current affairs in the Horn of Africa, East Africa and the Somali diaspora.
    • You will need to be aware of the changing needs of the audience and the media environment so that you can shape output accordingly.
    • You will also be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of digital technology and social media.
