Chemical Engineer(ETP & Quality Control) at Kim-Fay East Africa Limited

Role Purpose

• To oversee the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and ensure that all discharged water meets regulatory, environmental, and company quality standards. The role involves monitoring treatment processes, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and implementing continuous improvement measures for sustainable operations.

Key Responsibilities

Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) Oversight

• Monitor and control all stages of wastewater treatment (primary, secondary, tertiary).
• Supervise chemical dosing (coagulants, flocculants, disinfectants) for process efficiency.
• Ensure ETP operations run within regulatory discharge limits (BOD, COD, pH, TSS, color).
• Troubleshoot abnormal effluent parameters and implement corrective actions.

Quality Control & Testing

• Develop and implement sampling protocols for influent and effluent.
• Conduct laboratory analysis (BOD, COD, DO, pH, TDS, turbidity, nutrients, metals).
• Maintain accurate records of effluent quality data for internal and regulatory reporting.
• Use statistical process control (SPC) to track trends and recommend improvements.

Compliance & Reporting

• Ensure compliance with NEMA and other statutory environmental standards.
• Prepare and submit monthly/quarterly compliance reports to management and regulators.
• Maintain documentation and participate in audits.

Process Optimization & Sustainability

• Recommend and implement improvements to reduce water, energy, and chemical consumption.
• Support water recycling and reuse initiatives within the mill.
• Oversee sludge handling and disposal in compliance with regulations.

Safety & Training

• Enforce safety protocols in chemical handling and ETP operations.
• Train and mentor operators/technicians on ETP best practices.
• Promote awareness of effluent management across production departments.

Qualifications & Skills

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering (required).
• Certification in Wastewater Treatment, Environmental Engineering, or Water Quality Management is an added advantage.

Technical Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and water chemistry.
• Familiarity with ETP equipment (clarifiers, aeration systems, filters, sludge dewatering).
• Competence in lab analysis techniques for effluent monitoring.
• Experience with ISO 14001 EMS and environmental audits.
• Knowledge of automation systems (SCADA/DCS) preferred.
