    Conservation & Community Development Technical Specialist

    The Conservation & Community Development Technical Specialist will be responsible for providing technical support and leadership on the design and delivery of projects across the organisation. They will work with both the Conservation and Community Development teams, ensuring that projects are aligned and contribute to the overall vision of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Projects should seek to deliver maximum impact in conserving biodiversity and improving the well-being and prosperity of communities.
    The role holder will be part of the Project Management Office (PMO) and provide support to the effective running of that new function. They will also work closely with the Fundraising team to provide technical input to fundraising proposals

    Qualifications

    • A solid educational background, at least to degree level (Masters degree preferred) in a relevant discipline (Conservation management, development studies etc.) development studies and/or conservation an advantage 
    • Fluency in English and Kiswahili (written and verbal)

    Essential Knowledge,

    skills and Experience

    •  At least 5 years’ relevant work experience in providing technical leadership and support on major conservation programmes and projects 
    • In-depth understanding and working knowledge of global goals for the conservation and development sectors 
    • Significant programming experience in conservation and community development in Kenya and / or East Africa 
    • Proven success working on conservation and community development issues with, and / or within, the NGO and private sectors 
    • Ability to manage a complex workload, requiring efficient project planning and management 
    • Highly organised, ability to perform under pressure, multi-task and prioritise workload 
    • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with programme staff, and partners including governments, NGOs, community groups and the private sector
    •  Demonstrable ability to work collaboratively with key internal and external stakeholders, including those not having a MEL and research technical background
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and proven ability to communicate to a variety of audiences
    • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills across different cultures
    • Ability to travel

    Responsibilities

    • Project concept design
    • Provide technical programmatic expertise to teams in the design of effective project concepts
    •  Work with the Conservation and Community Development teams and the
    • Programme Development & Funding Lead to design project concepts that are aligned to organisational objectives and global goals
    •  Work with the Fundraising team to ensure project concepts are technically sound and can be used for fundraising purposes
    •  Provide technical leadership on project concepts that deliver high impact activities that focus on conservation, community development, or integrated
    • programming that conserves biodiversity and improves the well-being and prosperity of communities
    • Co-ordinate with teams to support the design of project concepts that can be used for fundraising opportunities
    •  Work with teams and the MEL Specialist to gather supporting information, data, and research to justify project concepts
    • Detailed project design
    • Provide technical input to support teams in detailed project design
    •  Work closely with the Conservation, Community development and fundraising teams to provide technical programmatic input on the design of projects for detailed funding applications
    •  Provide technical input to articulate the development challenges that projects are addressing, referencing relevant global, national, and local goals
    •  Work with the MEL Specialist to design projects that deliver maximum impact with clearly defined results that can be be accurately measured.
    • Technical oversight Provide technical oversight on project delivery
    •  Provide technical oversight of project delivery
    •  Work with the MEL Specialist to ensure projects are delivering the anticipated results and advise on adaptive programming where relevant
    •  Provide technical input on project reporting, particularly on narrative reporting for donor reports, and to support broader communications to external audiences
    • Support capacity building and knowledge management on programmes and projects
    •  Work with the MEL Specialist to ensure the collection, analysis, and evaluation of appropriate project information and that it is stored centrally
    •  Provide technical and capacity-building support on key issues around wildlife conservation, human wildlife conflict, wildlife trafficking, socio-economic context analysis, and the development of sustainable livelihood strategies
    •  Support the Programme Development & Fundraising Lead to ensure appropriate information on current projects and completed projects is available and in a format to support fundraising
    • Promote a culture of project learning and performance improvement
    •  Input to project reviews to identify lessons learnt and areas for improvement
    • Develop a learning agenda for the organisation, facilitating cross-departmental knowledge exchange and skills share around core programme thematic areas
    • Contribute to the development of a culture of continuous improvement, working with teams to identify further areas for training or tools and templates Contribute to wider organisational initiatives as needed
    • Drive efficient processes that enable effective cross-organisational working
    • Representation and Partnerships
    •  Keep abreast of cutting-edge initiatives and emerging issues and facilitate the sharing of relevant information across the organisation
    •  Lead and represent the organisation in relevant professional and sectoral networks, clusters and coalitions and use these to improve Ol Pejeta’s relevance, to influence externally, and to build the organisation’s professional profile
    •  Identify opportunities and establish dialogue towards partnerships with other conservation agencies
    •  Explore additional strategic partnerships related to conservation and community development
