Data Analyst Officer at Kenya Red Cross Society

Duties and Responsibilities

• Kenya Red Cross requires the support of a Data Analyst, to strengthen its data analytics team. Data are a central component of humanitarian action pre- and post-disaster. This means the organization need to be prepared to manage data collection and storage, analysis tools/techniques, skilled staff and strategies in order to enhance operation efficiencies through innovatively collecting information as well as exploiting archived information. We’re working on continuously generating insights and you will be collaborating with another Data Analyst on this.
• You will be primarily working with internal datasets, but there may be opportunity to investigate how external datasets can be leveraged to strengthen our insights. The insights generated will be used in our external publications and to improve KRCS humanitarian work.
• We are working hard to improve efficiency and reproducibility of our analyses, so experience with R programming is a key requirement.
• You will need to be comfortable with figuring out the best way to do something and to learn on the job. We are very supportive of professional development and are keen to help you grow your skills.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Review available open – and closed – (secondary) data sources and determine if these can be used instead of collecting new data.
• Analysis of data, both small and big. Development of algorithms to combine and analyse these data.
• Contribute in the development on reports, synchronized with analysed qualitative and quantitative data.
• Support with resource planning and management including project budget controlling and monitoring, evaluation and learning and reporting
• Management of project assistants to ensure effective project implementation, supporting growth and development and  performance setting and evaluation
• Deploy new methodologies for communicating data information, tailored to a specific audience, with a compelling narrative.
• Support Kenya Red Cross Society and regional National Societies in using the products, maps, and visualizations provided by the data team.
• Documenting lessons learnt, good practice and case studies to shape programme strategies approaches, and contribute to broader sector learning.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in any statistical course, actuarial science, computer science or any other related field with more than 5 years work experience.

Required Skills and Competencies

• Competence in using open source statistical softwares such as R and python; We are moving towards reproducible analysis, data cleaning and sharing code
• Experience of mapping tools like QGIS and ArcGIS
• Excellent analytical and research skills; Our work revolve around research and statistical concepts will help you to achieve this.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills
• Ability to work independently
• Strong communication skills in liaising with relevant stakeholders
• Cross team collaboration, proactive engagement with relevant departments and responsible parties
• Good documentation skills and proficient in Excel; A lot of our data is generated from Excel workbooks, and you will need to navigate these occasionally.
• Keen attention to detail
• Have prior experience in data collection and analysis in the field of social or economic-development fields
• Knowledge of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
