    ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES

    • The primary objective of this assessment exercise is to identify, map and analyze the overall humanitarian needs of refugees and asylum seekers in Nairobi. Secondly, it is intended to provide an analytical insight into where different needs lie and to what extent, so that relevant program areas of HIAS and RCK can add value, prioritize, plan and respond.

    The Specific Objectives Are

    • To provide an empirical overview of the status and developments of humanitarian needs for refugees and asylum seekers across Nairobi, especially regarding the accessibility to basic services.
    • To provide a multisectoral and comparable overview/update of the needs, capacities, and vulnerability situation of refugees and asylum seekers in urban areas (Nairobi), to provide the evidence base to inform the 2024 HIP planning and prioritization process.
    • To ensure that the needs and vulnerabilities of different refugee groups are understood, including women, children, older people, people with disabilities, and others who may face additional risks and barriers.
    • To ensure that the perspectives and preferences of refugees are reflected in the strategic and response planning.
    • To enhance targeting for the provision of assistance. Aiming to collect enough evidence and data to better inform future data driven targeting.
    • To improve the accuracy and completeness of comparable socio-economic indicators of refugees and asylum seekers to support evidence-based program design and planning for inclusion
    • To establish the suitable mechanisms for Accountability to Affected Populations including Feedback, Complaints and Response Mechanisms for vulnerable refugees, including LGBTQ+ persons, and the host community in Nairobi.
    • To screen the environmental risks linked to intended project and to assess the environmental impact of humanitarian operations planned.

    In light of this HIAS Kenya is seeking to recruit 15 research assistants to participate in a comprehensive training program, followed by a five-day data collection exercise.
    The Key Responsibilities Of The Research Assistant Shall Include.

    • Conduct interviews in accordance with the protocol and core research ethics principles of respecting participants, doing no harm, and treating all participants fairly.
    • Review all collected data to ensure accuracy and authenticity then submit the data to the office at agreed intervals
    • Provide the study team with regular updates, interviews completed, reasons for incomplete (partial interviews), and any important information about assigned roles.
    • Liaise with the study team to resolve any issues arising from logistics during data collection and demonstrate good judgment to stay safe.
    • Undertake any other study-related tasks assigned by the study team.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences
    • At least 1 years’ experience in qualitative and quantitative data collection involving human subjects.
    • A similar experience with HIAS and demonstrated knowledge of working with vulnerable refugees will be an added advantage.
    • Be in the possession of a smartphone.
    • Experience in collecting both quantitative and qualitative data
    • Full-time availability
    • Minimum age of 18 years
    • Combine team work and ability to work under minimal supervision
    • Good listening skills
    • Resident of the data collection locations (Eastleigh, Kawangware, Ongata Rongai, Kitengela, Kasarani)
    • Must be conversant with national languages (English and Swahili). Proficiency in Oromo, Somali, French, Arabic, and Kirundi are an added advantage.
    • Experience in collecting data using ODK/ONA/Survey CTO, KOBO TOOLBOX and other mobile phone applications will be an added advantage.
