    Global Senior Manager, Financial Institutions Services - Small and Medium Enterprise and Utility Lending

    Summary

    As part of a newly formed alliance with WaterEquity, Water.org is seeking a Global Senior Manager, of Financial Institution Services, Small and Medium Enterprise and Utility Lending to:

    Design and deliver consulting services to emerging markets Financial Institutions, especially banks, to expand lending to water and sanitation Small and Medium Enterprises and utilities; and
    Strengthen and expand WaterEquity’s investment opportunities in banks and other non-bank financial institutions that are financing water and sanitation Small and Medium Enterprises and utilities.

    The consulting services will be closely coordinated with WaterEquity’s investment strategy and are intended to expand and strengthen near-term opportunities for investing in banks, while also bolstering Water.org’s long-term capacity to deliver advisory services to banks in the field of water and sanitation Small and Medium Enterprise and utilities lending. The role will collaborate with other Water.org positions that are responsible for delivering consulting services to financial institutions.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Global Senior Manager, Financial Institution Services, Small and Medium Enterprise and Utility Lending reports directly to the Director of Financial Institution Services and is part of a growing team providing consulting services and investments to Financial Institutions.

    Strategic Development and Leadership (30%)

    • Lead Financial Institution services strategy for expanding Financial Institution lending to water and sanitation Small and Medium Enterprises and utilities
    • Recruit, train and supervise technical consultants for delivering technical assistance in certain regions (need based)
    • Expand available resources for delivering services by training Water.org staff and building and training a pool of contractors in priority markets
    • Lead research into policy environments of target investment countries, with particular focus on countries where regulators are pushing banks to develop green lending portfolios
    • Identify opportunities for expansion of markets and services, particularly by assessing best suited markets for investment

    Delivery of FI Services (30%)

    • Design the business model for delivering customized, client-driven services to expand Financial Institution lending
    • Lead business development and Financial Institution candidate screening process
    • Present Financial Institution candidate opportunities to the investment management team
    • Design and delivery of service relationships with Financial Institutions

    Portfolio Management (25%)

    • Monitor and report Financial Institution services portfolio results and impact milestones
    • Lead workouts for problem clients

    Knowledge Management and Representation (15%)

    • Coordinate closely with the WaterEquity Financial Institution Investments team and Director of Social Impact to effectively maximize the quality and quantity of investment opportunities
    • Ensure global coordination with Water.org and WaterEquity, with particular emphasis on collaboration with Water.org regional teams
    • Capture lessons learned on service delivery and cross-company coordination, ensure communication of lessons are built to guide the long-term evolution of Water.org and WaterEquity business models
    • Represent the Water.org and WaterEquity partnership at relevant sector events and investor discussions

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, or equivalent professional experience; Master’s degree preferred
    • Minimum twelve (12) years of professional experience at a bank or working directly with banks in emerging markets, such as delivery of consulting or technical assistance services
    • Out of 12 years, minimum 3 years of experience managing team of professionals
    • Experience in Small and Medium Enterprise or utilities loan product development, lending and risk management in emerging markets, preferably focused on green, infrastructure, and/or water and sanitation loans
    • Experience lending to, or working within, water and sanitation utilities preferred
    • Track record and insights regarding effective strategies and methods for increasing bank lending to niche sectors
    • Track record of identifying obstacles and opportunities, developing new business models, and entering new markets
    • Outstanding client relationship development and management skills
    • Demonstrated commitment to coordination and communications necessary for a successful partnership between Water.org and WaterEquity.
    • Willingness to travel approximately 25-30% of the time
    • Foreign language skills are a plus
    • Fluent in English (written and verbal) required
