Health and Safety Officer at Burhani Engineers Ltd

Job Purpose

• The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment by developing, implementing, and monitoring health and safety policies and processes across all operations. The role focuses on risk prevention, regulatory compliance, incident management, and promoting a strong safety culture across all project sites and activities.

Key Responsibilities

Health & Safety Compliance

• Ensure compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and other relevant Kenyan regulations.
• Monitor adherence to company safety policies, procedures, and processes across all sites.
• Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments.

Risk Management

• Identify potential hazards and implement appropriate control measures.
• Develop safe work methods and ensure all employees follow them.
• Maintain up-to-date risk registers for the assigned projects.

Training & Awareness

• Conduct health and safety induction for new employees and subcontractors.
• Organize safety training sessions, toolbox talks, and emergency drills.
• Promote and reinforce a strong safety culture across the organization.

Incident Management

• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
• Prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective actions.
• Monitor and ensure implementation of preventive measures.

Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and documentation.
• Prepare periodic safety performance reports for management.
• Ensure proper documentation of inspections, permits, and compliance activities.

Emergency Preparedness

• Develop and implement emergency response plans.
• Ensure availability and proper maintenance of safety equipment (PPE, fire extinguishers, etc.).
• Coordinate emergency response activities when necessary.

Continuous Improvement

• Recommend improvements to enhance workplace safety and operational efficiency.
• Stay updated on health and safety legislation and industry best practices.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, preferably in engineering, construction, or industrial environments.
• Registration with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS) in Kenya.
• NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent certification is an added advantage.
