Medical Specialist (Cardiothoracic Surgeon) at Kenyatta National Hospital

KNH 6 (2 POSTS)

Reporting to the Chief Medical Specialist/Head of the Department the Medical Specialist (Cardiothoracic Surgeon) will be expected to take full responsibility for patients under his/her care.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Reviewing patients and instructing in writing all their commendations;
2. Undertaking “First-on-Call” duties including clerking, investigating and managing patients.
3. Conducting weekly clinics and theatre days.
4. Training, supervising and mentoring Medical Officers, Medical Intern and other students.
5. Performing emergency surgeries.
6. Undertaking medico-legal duties including filling of P.3 forms, court attendance and performing postmortems.
7. Undertaking medical examinations and preparing Medical Board Proceedings
8. Carrying out community diagnosis, care and treatment.
9. Ensuring data and information is collected, transmitted and utilized to benefit the customer and service provider.
10. Conducting disease surveillance, prevention and control.
11. Carrying out health education and promotion;
12. Preparing medical reports.
13. Any other duties assigned by the relevant authority.

 Qualifications and Experience

1. Master’s Degree in Surgery or equivalent from the University of Nairobi or any other recognized University by the Medical Practitioner and Dentist Council.
2. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.Ch.B) degree from a recognized institution by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
3. A minimum period of eight (8) years’ relevant work experience, three (3) of
4. which should have been at the level of Senior Medical Officer or comparable position.
5. Sub-specialization in Cardiothoracic or equivalent qualification from an Institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council
6. Specialist recognition certificate from the Medical Practitioners and Dentist
