    Lecturer

    REF No: NL/04/2022 

    JOB PURPOSE

    Delivers all aspects of nurse education and will have a specific focus on the delivery of prescribed training curriculum as outlined by NCK and TKHMTC. Contributes to delivering the general range of subjects and activities within the training institution at Diploma level.

    KEY AREA RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching

    • To teach and examine students in the areas of subjects taught in classroom and clinical areas.
    • Prepare a scheme of work and lesson plans to be followed for the duration of the course and submit a copy to the Deputy Principal before the course begins.
    • To maintain and develop areas of expertise including participation in clinical activity under the general guidance of the academic officer and clinical coordinator.
    • Ensure the major Nursing Council assessments for students within the clinical placements are done and the records well kept.
    • Maintain an up to date records of students performance in all the subjects taught and dully submit them to the academic officer
    • Set and mark regularly, assignments and class work of students so as to evaluate student performance on areas taught.
    • Liaise with the Lecturer concerned to plan and conduct Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCEs).

    Student Liaison

    • To assist with the recruitment, selection, admission and orientation of new students.
    • Participate in college co-curricular activities as required through membership of committees, working groups and other reasonable activities.
    • To act as mentor to students and colleagues.
    • To offer counselling and guidance to students both on academic and social issues as necessary
    • Participate in supervising and guiding students on research
    • In collaboration with the Deputy Principal, ensure that students maintain a high level of discipline within and outside the college.

    Reviews of Teaching Practices and Administration

    • To participate with other academic and clinical staff in the development of innovative teaching and learning strategies
    • To discharge reasonable responsibilities with regards to the supervision of students and junior lecturers
    • To contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with TKH staff and/or other collaborating institutions through liaison and participation in working groups when appropriate.
    • In collaboration with the Principal, ensure minor reviews of the curriculum are done.
    • Regularly update the teaching staff and students on any new development regarding nursing education and procedures through CMEs.
    • Evaluating teaching and learning activities for students on teaching practice.

    Professional Development

    • Maintain and develop own professional competencies and knowledge by attending and participating in continuous education sessions within and externally.
    • Regular updating of self in skills and new developments in nursing education and practice.
    • To exercise a high standard of scholarship, to conduct research both personally, and as a member of a team.
    • Must be competent in teaching methodology, research, mentorship, counselling and assessment of students

    ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
    • Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing will be an added advantage
    • Registered and has a valid license from the Nursing Council of Kenya
    • A minimum of 1 year experience of classroom and clinical teaching experience at an institution of higher learning.

    SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

    • Ability to teach using a variety of methods to effectively engage students in learning.
    • Advanced computer skills and understanding of its use in a college setting.
    • Able to counsel and mentor students and staff.
    • Able to lead a large group of students.
    • Able to assess students’ oral and written work including exam papers.
    • Advanced written and oral communication skills: able to provide stimulating lectures for students and provide written materials for students.
    • Good organisation skills.
