Program Specialist - Master Trainer, NYOTA Refugee Business Development Service Specialist at Danish Refugee Council

Overall purpose of the role: 

• DRC has submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) for The National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project, supported by the World Bank and implemented by the Government of Kenya through the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), that aims to expand employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for vulnerable youth. In anticipation of being shortlisted and invited to submit a full proposal, DRC is launching this recruitment process to identify suitably qualified candidates for the proposed key positions. Any subsequent engagement will be conditional on DRC progressing to the proposal stage and ultimately being awarded the assignment.
• Within this anticipated assignment, the BDS Delivery Specialist will be responsible for delivering high-quality, contextualised Business Development Services to refugee youth under the supervision of the Team Leader. The role will combine practical entrepreneurship and business skills training, socio-emotional skills development, coaching and inclusive facilitation, with delivery adapted to the specific needs and realities of participants in Kakuma/Kalobeyei and Dadaab.

Duties & Responsibilities:
BDS delivery and facilitation

• Deliver approved BDS classroom sessions covering core business skills, entrepreneurial mindset, soft skills and relevant digital business tools.
• Use practical, experiential and interactive methods adapted to local market realities, different literacy levels and the needs of refugee youth.
• Provide one-to-one and small-group coaching to help participants identify viable opportunities, strengthen business models, pricing, cash flow, bookkeeping, marketing and customer service.

Training of Trainers and curriculum implementation

• Support and/or deliver Training of Trainers (ToT) using the approved curriculum and minimum facilitation standards.
• Apply the customised BDS package consistently while providing structured feedback on participant needs, curriculum relevance and required adaptations.
• Facilitate in multiple languages where relevant and use accessible formats and methods for participants with different communication, mobility or sensory needs.

Inclusion, safeguarding and participant support

• Apply gender-responsive, disability-inclusive and trauma-informed approaches throughout training and participant engagement.
• Recognise barriers affecting women, young caregivers and persons with disabilities and support appropriate adaptation, referral and participation measures.
• Maintain safe, respectful and non-discriminatory learning environments and follow relevant DRC safeguarding and referral procedures.

Quality assurance and coordination

• Maintain complete and accurate participant records, attendance documentation, training reports and other evidence required for verification and reporting.
• Coordinate with the Team Leader, mentors and project staff to reinforce training content and support participant progress after classroom delivery.
• Contribute to business networking, market-linkage and information sessions as required.

Experience and Technical Competence 

• Minimum three (3) years of specific experience and technical capacity in implementing BDS programmes, including business/entrepreneurship training.
• Experience working with youth and vulnerable populations in refugee settings.
• Experience delivering Training of Trainers (ToT), including facilitation in multiple languages.
• Experience supporting early-stage businesses in the micro-enterprise sector.
• Demonstrated understanding of the local community context of micro and small enterprises.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship, business management or a related field 

Language

• Proficiency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
• Proficiency in Somali is highly desirable, particularly for work with refugee communities in Dadaab
