Organisational Setting and Reporting

UNEP's Law Division works with international and non-governmental organizations, national and local governments, business and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, and enable the implementation of Conventions and international Agreements. This post is located in the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) Support and Cooperation Unit in the Law Division. The incumbent will report to the Project Manager of the Biosafety Clearinghouse project, and will be responsible for the following:
Responsibilities
Providing assistance in support of planning and implementation activities/processes for the UNEP-GEF Project for Sustainable Capacity Building for Effective Participation in the BCH (BCH III).
Preparing, maintaining and updating files (electronic and paper) and internal databases; designing and generating a variety of periodic and ad hoc reports, statistical tables, graphic content, and other background materials/notes to facilitate inspection and other reviews.
Competencies
Education
Completion of secondary school is required. Additional technical training in secretarial, administration and office management is desirable. Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Successful passing of the Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) in English at the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ), Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project, programme management, administration or related area is required.
Experience in providing substantive support to senior management, managing priorities and monitoring multiple and diverse activities and work processes is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN working language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment against this post is on a local basis. Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension. United Nations Considerations
