Duties to be performed under the orders of physician
Maintain license with appropriate licensing council (Nursing Council)
Goal for enough Respiratory therapists is to allow for 24/7 coverage of the hospital. Respiratory therapist will be able to physically respond to pages within 5 minutes even while on break.
Responsibilities
Attend rounds in ICU’s and HDU’s with various care teams, prioritizing rounds on ventilated patients.
Monitor Ventilated patients Q3H, optimizing ventilation, weaning and escalating as needed to meet target orders
Monitor CPAP/Bipap Q3H
Set up all ventilators
Be present to recieve all vented patients from theatre
Set up CPAP/BiPAP as needed
Preform all extubations*
Be present to assist or preform all intubations*
Be present to assist at all codes
Ensure all ETT are secure at the proper depth and re-secure as needed
Draw and Run arterial blood gasses in cooperation with the lab.*
Asses all Trach patients every shift, preforming teaching for self-care
Assess all patients requiring more then 6Lpm Oxygen daily
Assess all patients requiring more than 10 Lpm Oxygen every shift
Assess all ICU/HDU Patients every shift
Assist with the treatments of Acute Respiratory patients (i.e. Asthma/COPD,etc) in Casualty or other wards
Assist with transport of all intubated patients*
Ensure Intubation emergency trays are checked weekly and after each use
In conjunction with physiotherapy preform chest physio as time allows
Preform Spirometry’s as ordered
Assist with Asthma/COPD teaching in out-patient as needed
Answer pages promptly
Assist biomed trouble shooting of respiratory equipment, and filling oxygen cylinders
Work as part of the team assisting other staff as time allows
*When procedure/transport is under the care of anesthesia RS does not need to do/attend.
Qualifications
Trained Respiratory Nurse from Tenwek College of Health Sciences Respiratory Nurse program
Registered Respiratory Therapist completed requirements from AARC (US) or CBRC(Canada)
