    Technical Assistant

    The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a technical assistant to provide general research support to scientists hosted at the ILRI Biosciences facility.

    ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. 

    Central Core support

    • Collection and washing of glassware, lab consumables such as media, buffer solutions, pipettes tips and tubes.
    •  Sterilization of glassware, media and laboratory waste using autoclave.
    • Issuance of consumables to lab users; distilled water/Milli Q water, glassware etc
    • Collect and clean PPEs using laboratory dedicated laundry machines (Washers, driers, steam presser) and return the lab coats to designated locations in various labs
    • Maintain high standards of hygiene in specialized labs such as Radioisotope, BSL2/3 conversion lab and biorepository areas.

    Plant growth facility support

    • Prepare soil and soilless growth media mix and sterilization for use in propagating tissue culture plantlets with guidance of greenhouse supervisor.
    • Monitor pest and disease incidences through regular scouting of the plant growth facility and with supervision of greenhouse supervisor to perform chemical sprays.
    • Clean and disinfect potting/ labelling materials.
    • Work with green house users in disposing waste at the end of the projects
    • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned

    Requirements

    • Kenya certificate of secondary education
    • One-year relevant experience
    • Technical training
    • Basics in biosafety and First Aid Training
    • Ability to communicate effectively, work independently and work productively in a multidisciplinary, multicultural team.
