    Journalist (East Africa)

    Job Introduction

    The BBC World Service is an impartial and independent international news provider, part of BBC News, which delivers radio and TV output in addition to the digital first approach. In line with a new strategy to transition the World Service into a digital first operation that provides distinctive and original content, it is establishing content and production hubs to create high impact, original journalism for its global audiences. We are looking for journalist with plenty of story ideas to contribute to the planning and origination of new angles and stories

    Role Responsibility

    • Exercise editorial judgement to spot news stories, meet deadlines and maintain high editorial standards
    • Produce a wide range of creative ideas to engage audiences across different linear and digital platforms
    • Identify, develop and package original stories and other content for various BBC platforms
    • Build and maintain regional contacts and provide timely warning of developing stories and trends

    Are you the right candidate?

    • Bilingual language expertise is essential: A full command and up to date knowledge of a key world Service regional language as first (or equivalent) language as well as complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
    • Ability to originate, develop and produce engaging digital content on various themes that will appeal to African and global audiences, particularly among women and young people.
    • Thorough understanding of the BBC’s editorial guidelines and values
    • Experience of working in fast-moving news environment.

    Digital Producer, Sport - East Africa (Senior Journalist)

    Job Introduction

    The BBC World Service is undergoing a significant strategic review to become a digital first operation that provides distinctive and original content. In line with this strategy, we are establishing digital production hubs to produce high impact, original journalism for our audiences across the globe. We are looking for a talented and motivated digital producer to research, storyboard, report, present, write, translate, edit and adapt sport news stories or programme material for various audiences and platforms.

    Role Responsibility

    • The Senior Journalist (Digital Producer) will generate new and creative treatments for digital and social platforms, particularly in text and video.
    • Present engagingly for news and current affairs websites and social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.
    • Use editorial judgement, creativity and flair to make original and compelling visual content and also produce interesting graphics sequences.
    • Use knowledge of social and other trends to make informed decisions on upcoming stories.

    Reporter, Security - East Africa (Senior Journalist)

    Job Introduction

    The BBC World Service is an impartial and independent international news provider, part of BBC News. We are seeking to hire a Security Reporter to provide specialist coverage of a broad range of geopolitical and security themes across Africa. The role entails providing coverage of breaking news stories, major planned stories and longer term investigations.

    Role Responsibility

    • Break news stories across the continent and provide analysis and context as necessary on a range of security issues and stories
    • Exercise strong editorial judgement to spot emerging trends in Security, verify and break news stories, while meeting deadlines and maintaining the highest BBC editorial standards
    • Produce a wide range of creatively told stories to engage audiences across different linear and digital platforms
    • Identify, develop and package original stories and other content for various BBC platforms
    • Build and maintain regional contacts and provide timely and authoritative coverage developing stories and trends

    Are you the right candidate?

    • You will be resilient, highly-motivated self-starter, persistent and keen not to take no for an answer, while operating calmly under pressure. You will need to have experience in reporting from hostile environments, and working closely within established security protocols.
    • Bilingual language expertise is essential: A full command and up to date knowledge of a key BBC World Service regional language as first (or equivalent) language as well as complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
    • Extensive knowledge of a range of security and conflict topics, ranging from inter and intra-state conflicts, Islamist activity, cyber security, peacekeeping and conflicts over natural resources, as well as the ability to discern and identify security angles and themes in the broader news and current affairs agenda.
    • Experience in originating, planning, developing and producing engaging digital content on complex political and social issues that will appeal to African and global audiences, particularly among women and young people.
    • A record of live reporting as well as ability to tell stories in an authoritative and engaging style and pace, adapted for different target audiences.

    Senior Journalist Team Manager, Swahili TV

    Role Responsibility

    • Manage daily editorial operations of the TV output, including ensuring editorial compliance and outputting the daily programme
    • Work closely with SNE, Swahili Service, to implement digital strategy and opportunities as part of a long term strategic transformation.
    • Integrate digital-first commissioning in editorial workflows and ensure that service’s editorial purpose is aligned with audience needs
    • Commission and work with graphic designers to produce creative and original graphics sequences.
    • Responsible for thinking through and around editorial challenges, initiating and implementing realistic alternative strategies and approaches.

    Are you the right candidate?

    • Demonstrable experience in originating and producing impactful digital first content, including explainers and analysis pieces.
    • Proven experience in breaking news stories as well as producing features, investigations and original journalism about East, Central and Horn of Africa, and global news and current affairs.
    • Experience in managing and overseeing a team in agile and remote working environments.
    • Demonstrable experience in multimedia journalism with substantial knowledge of data analytics tools to drive decision making on story choice, publication time and recirculation.
    • An understanding of BBC News distinctive news agenda and a wider interest in the digital strategy of the BBC as a whole.
    • Fluency in written and oral Swahili, and appreciation and understanding of different language dialects in order to provide clear editorial guidance
