- UNEP’s Regional Office for Africa plays a vital role in the implementation of UNEP global programmes in the African region by initiating, coordinating, and catalysing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental challenges and emerging issues.
- The African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) was established in 1985 to provide a platform for African Ministers of Environment to deliberate on issues of importance to the continent and to provide policy guidance for environmental action.
- The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the Secretariat to AMCEN and supports the organization of its regular and special sessions, Bureau meetings, and the implementation of its decisions. To effectively deliver its mandate, AMCEN requires enhanced coordination of its programmes, activities, partnerships, and technical processes.

- The consultancy is required to support the implementation of national- and global-level activities under the EC-funded project "Implementation and reinforcement of global water resolutions, preparation and follow-up to UNEA-7 and the UN Water Conferences 2026 & 2028". - The intern will support the execution of the communications and knowledge management for the Global Peatlands Initiative, an initiative with the aim to protect peatlands as the world’s largest carbon stock, and enhance seamless connection and synergy with broader Biodiversity, Landscapes and People Unit’s knowledge management.
Specific tasks and responsibilities
The intern will support the Biodiversity, Landscapes and People Unit in communications and knowledge management for the Global Peatlands Initiative Phase II project. Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer (P3), the intern will:

Under the supervision of the Marine and Freshwater Branch’s Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Unit Chief and Programme Management Officer, the consultant will perform the following duties:
- Strengthening GFCR’s communications, with a focus on website and social media content, newsletters, graphic design and development of multimedia products to support advocacy, partner engagement, and re-source mobilization.
The Multimedia and Graphic Design Specialist shall perform the following tasks:
- Graphic Design and Visual Production Design and produce high-quality graphic materials in line with GFCR and partner brand guidelines.
- Develop layouts for reports, publications, presentations, factsheets, and campaign materials.
- Ensure consistency of visual identity across all outputs.
Multimedia and Video Production
- Prepare photo and video materials for communications products.
- Film and produce case study videos, including interviews, b-roll footage, and visual narratives, sub-ject to approved briefs.
- Edit and package video content for digital platforms, events, and presentations.
- Produce light motion graphics or animations as required.
Social Media Pipeline Management
- Maintain and update a forward-looking social media content pipeline.
- Produce platform-specific visual and video assets.
- Support campaigns aligned with global ocean, climate, biodiversity, health, and finance milestones.
- GFCR Quarterly Newsletter Design and format the GFCR quarterly digital newsletter.
- Develop graphics, layouts, and visual elements ensuring clarity and accessibility.

Visual Asset and Repository Management
- Maintain and update the GFCR photo and video repository, including labelling, metadata, and ver-sion control. Ensure assets are accessible and suitable for reuse across communications products.
Design and Layout of Technical Publications
- Under the Source to Sea Pollution unit, the consultant shall design and produce the layout of the following publications: Compendium of Lessons Learned from Wastewater Surveillance at Ports and Airports o Design and format the final publication, including tables, graphs, charts, visual elements, and infographics.
- Towards a Harmonized Approach for Wastewater Surveillance in Africa
- Design and format the final document, ensuring clear visual presentation of data, charts, tables, and infographics.
- Capacity Needs Assessment for Wastewater Surveillance Systems in Africa
- Design and produce the layout of the publication identifying regional priorities, technical gaps, and capacity-building needs, including visual representations of findings.

Qualifications/special skills
An advanced degree in Communications and environmental programmes is required.
- A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
- 2 years of experience in communications and environmental programmes is required Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams, including local and expatriate technical experts is required.
- Demonstrated experience in events, webinar, training and workshop planning is desirable

Under the supervision of the Task Manager for Global and Europe and Asia Portfolio the consultant will perform the following duties:
Specific tasks and responsibilities
- Review and finalize submission packages for GCF concept notes and GEF PIFs, PFDs and CEO Endorsement requests.
- Provide input to UNEP and GEF review processes and address comments.
- Provide input to PPG processes, including internalization.
- Prepare documentation needed for the internalization process of CEO endorsed projects.
- Review progress and financial reports of assigned ongoing projects.
- Compile information and review reports related to upcoming Mid-Term or Terminal Reviews and Evaluations
- Provide input and review of GCF Full Proposals.
- Coordinate the Unit’s input for IPMR, including requesting and coordinating inputs from Unit colleagues, providing training to colleagues on how to input information, undertaking quality control and quality assurance of data provided, and preparing management reports on the Unit’s status on IPMR.
- Liaise when requested with the other relevant stakeholders within UNEP, especially the Cities team, the Sustainable Mobility Unit, the Research and Market Branch and the Regional Offices.
Qualifications/special skills
- Master’s degree in environmental policy, international affairs, engineering, environmental sciences, economic or in close-related field is required.
- A first level degree with additional two years of qualifying experience maybe accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;
- Minimum of 2 years of technical / evaluation experience is required, preferably including evaluating large, regional, or global programmes and using a Theory of Change approach is required
- Excellent writing and analytical, as well as research skills and good understanding of GEF project cycle and policies.
- It will be an asset to have experience with GEF projects and/or UNEP projects.is required.
- A good understanding of the buildings and construction sector is desirable.
