    Global Future Cities Programme Urban Planning and Resilience Expert

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in Architecture, Urban Development and Planning, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in the field of urban development and planning (and/or related fields) with direct proven experience of programme/project management is required
    • Direct proven experience of urban resilience projects/processes is required;
    • Experience of urban mobility is considered an asset;
    • Understanding of and experience from managing urban data on resilience is an asset;
    • Experience working in the public sector, e.g. local governments is considered an asset;
    • Experience in any of the countries or cities of the programme is an asset;
    • Experience working on social change projects is an asset;
    • Leading, designing and managing capacity building processes is an asset;

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
    • Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
    • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
    • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
    • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    • Preferred areas of study: Communications, Media Studies, Journalism or related field.

    Work Experience

    • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
    • Experience in social Media campaigns is required.
    • Experience in an international and multilingual environment is desirable.
    • Experience in social media tools and platforms is desirable.

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Spanish is desirable.

    Active Mobility Assistant

    Responsibilities and Tasks

    The Individual Contractor will support the successful roll out of the bicycle train in Nairobi, with the participation of local members of the cycling community as well as several government participants. The Individual Contractor will also support with the provision of technical advice to the local government on safe routes to school, conduct road safety assessments and propose street design recommendations. Furthermore, the Individual Contractor will support advocacy activities related to promoting the uptake of cycling amongst women.

    •  Roll out the concept of the Bike Train to further areas in Nairobi to enhance safety of commuter cyclists
    •  Conduct road safety assessments (Safe Routes to School) in the catchment of 2 schools including fatality and injury data, road and street conditions, quality of public transport services, road safety measures taken by the school etc.
    •  Based on the road safety assessments (activity 2), derive policy recommendations towards improving road safety around schools
    •  Propose design improvements around schools (related to activity 2) and provide technical assistance in design review to ensure alignment of street design proposals with child-friendly streets
    •  Support collaboration between government and schools (i.e. parent-teacher associations) on road safety & safe routes to school
    •  Promote the uptake of cycling among women in Nairobi through advocacy

    Qualifications/special skills

    • High school diploma/certificate is required.
    • Additional training in Urban Planning, Transport Planning, Geography, or a related field is required.
    • A minimum of 5 years working experience in Urban or Transport Planning is required.
    • A good understanding of urban planning, urban development, urban policy and legislation and sustainable urbanisation in Kenya and other African countries is required.
    • Experience working in an NGO is an added advantage.

    Languages

    Fluency in oral and written English is required.
