    Learning Designer

    The Opportunity:

    In 2019, Arifu reached over 1 million learners with informational content designed to develop skills, inform decisions and improve lives. The years 2020-2021 will focus on expanding our educational content offering to increase our value to new and existing learners. Arifu is hiring a highly motivated Learning Designer to help us realize a bold vision of placing a smart personal learning assistant in everyone's hands across Africa and globally.

    The Learning Team at Arifu designs content in partnership with industry experts and local and multilateral institutions and works closely with Arifu research and data teams to generate insights from field research, rapid A/B testing and learner data to drive the relevance and impact of Arifu’s content on end learners. The Learning Designer will be responsible for research, writing and improving Arifu’s expanding educational content offering.

    This is a full-time position based at Arifu’s headquarters in Nairobi reporting to the Learning Design Manager.

    Job Description:

    The Learning Designer will be responsible for: 

    • Participating in project scoping sessions with partners and technical experts;
    • Performing field research to gather insights on learner biases, mental models and cultural norms to inform content design;
    • Contributing to the design and structure of new programs including setting learning outcomes, brainstorming treatment design, writing content and informing program evaluation;
    • Communicating with partners to resolve content-related issues;
    • Maintaining strong project management capabilities with planning, communicating, documenting, and tracking milestones and results;
    • Contributing to team strategy for prioritizing new partnerships and content to add to the Arifu platform;
    • Participating in community events, trade meetups, and industry workshops in Nairobi and globally.

    Qualifications:

    A desire to impact lives, the ability to make a long term commitment to your team and the product, and exceptional problem-solving abilities are all essential prerequisites on the Arifu team. For this role, we’re also looking for someone with the following:

    • 5+  years of work experience in learning content design, preferably in East Africa;
    • Undergraduate degree in education or a related field;
    • Strong written communication and excellent attention;
    • Previous experience conducting qualitative research to inform learning content is a plus;
    • Fluency in English required and fluency in Swahili preferred;
    • Motivation to develop skills conducting field research and willingness to spend long days in the sun, talking to people about their lives and observing them interacting with our products;
    • Resourceful and proactive when generating solutions to the problems that stand in your way;
    • Ability to enjoy (and survive) the chaos of a high-growth startup.

    Senior Legal Associate

    The Opportunity:

    Arifu is looking to hire a Senior Legal Associate to support the team in managing the contracting and regulatory aspects of the business. Arifu reached over 1m users in 2019 with a rapidly growing active user base. The years 2020-2021 will see significant growth in terms of onboarding learners and partners and the Senior Legal Associate will be an essential member of the Operations team in providing legal support and ensuring Arifu’s value-addition to our key stakeholders.

    The Senior Legal Associate will be an individual who understands corporate law and has advanced critical and legal reasoning skills. Delivering excellence at Arifu depends on efficient cross-team collaboration working with the business development team and project management teams to ensure an effective and smooth experience for our stakeholders. As such, the Senior Legal Associate needs to absolutely love taking on new challenges, bring a problem-solving focus, and be willing to have fun under pressure while being uncompromising on quality delivery. Lastly, they should be driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, be able to write and communicate legal ideas to different audiences, and love learning from the variety of skill-sets and experiences at Arifu and Arifu’s partners.

    This is a full-time position based at Arifu’s headquarters in Nairobi reporting to the Senior Operations Manager.

    Job Description:

    As the Senior Legal Associate your responsibilities will include:

    • Taking the lead on contracting, i.e. draft, review and interpret contracts and legal documents and oversee compliance to these documents and ensuring that Arifu’s interests are protected;
    • Taking the lead on research in all regulation, especially data regulation and communication legislation in potential and actual countries of operation and staying abreast of any developments and changes;
    • Developing and deploying the compliance risk management framework;
    • Proactively providing advice and guidance on legal risk exposure;
    • Identifying compliance gaps within various departments in Arifu and recommending appropriate action so as to ensure full compliance;
    • Ensuring full compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements in the respective countries of operation;
    • Ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Companies Act and other legal provisions that Arifu needs to adhere to in the region;
    • Developing and implementing policies, processes and manuals around compliance;
    • Responsible for ensuring full legal compliance in all organizational activities;
    • Liaising with Arifu’s legal partners to provide litigation support in handling all legal matters arising;
    • Provide the necessary support in handling Company Secretarial matters.
    • Any other duties reasonably assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • Good understanding of the law.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B) and Kenya School of Law post-graduate training
    • 6+ years experience in a legal department in a busy corporate, with a focus on corporate law.
    • Fluent in oral and written English. Fluency in Kiswahili is highly desired.
    • Excellent research skills.
    • Proficient computer skills.
    • Excellent planning & organizing/work management skills.
    • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills;
    • Attention to detail;
    • Excellent filing and document maintenance skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

    Learning Design Manager

    The Learning Team at Arifu designs content in partnership with industry experts and local and multilateral institutions and works closely with Arifu research and data teams to generate insights from field research, rapid A/B testing and learner data to drive the relevance and impact of Arifu’s content on end learners. The Learning Design Manager serves a critical role in helping us expand our content offering and will be responsible for testing new content models, improving content design based on research generated insights and best practices in instructional design, and ensuring all content published for learners meets high quality standards. To do this effectively, they should be able to apply expertise in all or most of the following competencies:

    • Team management
    • Instructional design and assessments 
    • Rich media content, including images and video
    • Gamification and personalization
    • Human centered design research behavioral economics principles

    Job Description:

    Working closely across teams at Arifu, the Learning Design Manager will be responsible for the following:

    • Aligning with internal teams and partners on content objectives and expected outcomes.
    • Communicating with partners to resolve content related issues.
    • Managing learning designers and consultants to ensure a consistent professional-level quality of content.
    • Training learning designers on best practices in instructional design for mobile learning. 
    • Testing new models for adding content on the Arifu platform, including content generated from other sources.
    • Collaborating with the research team to conduct problem diagnostics and identifying solutions for A/B testing.
    • Designing and executing UX tests informed by research through a collaboration with the research team.
    • Collaborating with research and product teams to design new features to improve the learner experience.
    • Writing blogs, articles, and other publications in conjunction with the organizational strategy.
    • Completing monthly check-ins and quarterly performance reviews for each learning designer;
    • Managing time and holding oneself accountable to deliver on time and with quality. 
    • Communicating challenges in a timely manner where unforeseen events have taken place.
    • Contributing to team strategy for prioritizing new partnerships and content to add to the Arifu platform;
    • Participating in regular check-ins with the Chief Learning Officer. 
    • Participating in community events, trade meetups, and industry workshops in Nairobi and globally.

    Qualifications:

    A desire to impact lives, the ability to make a long term commitment to your team and the product, and exceptional problem solving abilities are all essential prerequisites on the Arifu team. For this role, we’re also looking for: 

    • A minimum of 10 years work experience in content design, preferably in East Africa.
    • Masters or Undergraduate degree with relevant experience in education or a related field. 
    • Proven leadership skills, preferably with a minimum of 2-5 years of job experience managing content designers.
    • Expertise in all or most of the following: instructional design and assessments, rich media content development, gamification and personalization, human centered design research, and behavioral economics principles.
    • Strong willingness and motivation to help develop the skill and abilities of other designers on the team.
    • Strong written communication and excellent attention to detail.
    • Fluency in English required and fluency in Swahili preferred.
    • Experience conducting and leading field research and willingness to spend long days in the sun, talking to people about their lives and observing them interacting with our products.
