    Head of Nursing

    REF: TNH/HRD/HON/08/2022

    Reporting to the Director Nursing Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing nursing services and ensuring delivery of efficient and quality nursing and patient care in line with established protocols and the Hospital’s objectives.

    ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Assist the Director Nursing Services in the development and implementation of the Nursing division strategy in line with the Hospital’s strategic plan.
    2. Participate in the review and dissemination of policies, procedures, guidelines and directives in the division and evaluate their outcomes.
    3. Participate in the improvement of nursing care through protocols of care utilisation, evaluation and effective communication in collaboration with medical staff and other professionals.
    4. Keep abreast with new developments in nursing services and advice the Director Nursing Services on how these impact on the division.
    5. Define, agree and monitor nursing standards with a view of continuously improve the quality of the nursing care in the medical wards.
    6. Manage implementation and evaluation of quality control methods in nursing in compliance with established standards.
    7. Ensure safe and continuous provision of clinical nurse management cover in the medical wards in line with established protocols.
    8. Ensure implementation and maintenance of infection control procedures and standards by the nursing team in the medical wards.
    9. Participate in investigation of patients’ complaints and make recommendations in the light of the findings in line with established guidelines.
    10. Participate and/or chair committee meetings as nominated by Director Nursing Services in line with the division’s requirements.
    11. Carry outward rounds regularly in order to be in touch with patients and check the environment, availability and effective utilisation of resources.
    12. Ensure orientation packages for orientation of nurses joining the Hospital are up to date and evaluate the learning outcomes and progress to ensure nurses integrate fully in the culture and systems of the Hospital.
    13. Identify training and continuous professional development needs of qualified nurses in new clinical nursing techniques and procedures, determine the practical component of programmes and evaluate training outcomes.
    14. Determine the cadres of staff and ensure there exists a right skill mix in the medical wards.
    15. Provide support in training for the peri-operative nurses by ensuring orientation, placement and rotation of students in the clinical area as well as ensure the syllabus of the school is in tandem with the practise in the hospital.
    16. Promote nursing research, assist in implementation of research findings and recommendations as well as evaluate effectiveness in improving the quality of nursing care.
    17. Uphold high levels of patient confidentiality and work ethic in line with applicable code of conduct and hospital objectives.
    18. Build, lead and motivate a competent medical ward nursing team that will in turn ensure that the department has the right people in the right places to sustainably support the delivery of nursing services at the Hospital; and
    19. Any other responsibilities that may be assigned to the job holder by the supervisor from time to time.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    1. Master’s degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
    2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognized institution.
    3. Kenya Registered Nurse/Midwife.
    4. Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid practicing license.
    5. Minimum of 10 years nursing experience with 5 years at management level

    Director, Nursing Services

    REF: TNH/HRD/DNS/08/2022

    Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing leadership and management oversight of the nursing services division and ensure delivery of efficient and patient centric nursing and patient care across all medical units the Hospital in line with the established protocols and the hospital’s strategic objectives.

    ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Formulate and ensure implementation of the nursing services strategy including service delivery and patient control systems in line with best practice.
    2. Demonstrate ownership of and communicate the nursing services’ strategic direction and objectives to all staff.
    3. Develop and ensure implementation of protocols of care in collaboration with other medical staff.
    4. Develop and ensure implementation of the division’s annual work plans in line with the hospital’s strategic plan.
    5. Participate as a member of senior management in formulating corporate strategies, policies, plans and budgets and in monitoring the Hospital’s performance to ensure that the corporate objectives and targets are achieved.
    6. Oversee day to day operations in the nursing division including allocation of duty roster, annual leave, medical benefits and enforce ethics and professional standards.
    7. Maintain a positive and collaborative working relationship with physicians, colleagues and other health care delivery system leaders to ensure strategic and operational goals are achieved, in line with the Mission and Values of the Hospital.
    8. Continuously monitor the quality of nursing services against performance indicators in order to enhance the provision of quality care to the patients.
    9. Provide leadership, mentor, coach, support and guidance to departmental staff to
    10. ensure achievement of set objectives
    11. Participate in senior management team meetings and advisory boards.
    12. Carry outward rounds on a regular basis to keep in touch with patients and staff in order to strengthen patient care.
    13. Identify procurement needs of the division and ensure proper maintenance and monitoring of inventory levels.
    14. Provide guidance to the nursing team and ensure that disciplinary issues are handled professionally.
    15. Participate in the investigation of patients' complaints and ensure timely resolution of the complaints and implement changes as applicable.
    16. Identify professional development gaps and ensure implementation of continuous professional development interventions for the nursing team in order to ensure the team has the right skills and improve standards in healthcare provision at the hospital.
    17. Ensure implementation and full compliance by the nursing division of all hospital approved quality management systems including ISO standards, environmental management system (EMS), occupational health and safety OH&S), and JCIA among others.
    18. Prepare and submit all monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
    19. Prepare the nursing services division income and expenditure budget and monitor its implementation upon approval.
    20. Build, lead and motivate a competent nursing management team that will in turn ensure that the division has the right people in the right places to sustainably support the delivery of nursing care at the Hospital; and
    21. Attend to administrative duties in the division: and
    22. Any other responsibilities that may be assigned to the job holder by the supervisor from time to time.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    1. Master’s degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
    2. Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognized institution.
    3. Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid practising licence.
    4. Minimum of 12 years nursing experience with 7 years at Senior Management level.
