    MV Grid Engineer

    Job Description

    As a Medium Voltage Grid Engineer, you will play a critical role in the project design development and keeping PowerGen’s customers connected across vast geographies in which we operate.  You will coordinate with an international technology team to keep the company’s operations running smoothly with the best hardware, software, and firmware tools.  You will report to the Engineering Manager or Technical Director and work closely across the Project Development, Project Management, Supply Chain, Technology, and Operation & Maintenance functions to deliver the design and technical support for project execution we use to serve the customers across all countries in which we operate.  

    This role requires power system networks, LV /MV, detail design engineering skills in developing the transmission and distribution network, Substation primary and secondary equipment circuit designs using the established tools and new technologies making a significant contribution to PowerGen’s mission of building the energy systems of the future in Africa. You will work within the Supporting Business Unit (SBU) project execution engineering team to implement these designs on PowerGen’s future grids distribution design development.

    What You’ll Make Happen:

     Engineering Design Development

    •  Achieve world-class internal engineering capabilities through internal resources, training and development and partnering as the company continues to grow as both the leading minigrid developer in Africa and a MW scale solar project developer.
    • Deliver cost-effective designs, meeting international and local regulations, relevant technical standards, and industry best practice with high attention to detail.
    • Work within multidisciplinary teams to deliver all elements of grid distribution and substation designs required for the mini-grid installations from route survey, geotechnical, structural, earthing, distribution, grid integration and protection systems.

    KPIs

    • MV / LV grid detailed design on time, on budget delivery.
    • Bill of Material (BOM) and design engineering cost optimization.
    • Engineering standards compliance.
    • Engineering documentation.

     Role Specific Requirements:

    • Develop electrical power system designs for LV and MV substation, transmission, and distribution.
    • Develop concept designs (including layout, SLDs, and BoM) for the project development and bid submission.
    • Develop engineering design basis, and determine the testing, commissioning, and performance guarantee requirements. 
    • Develop the technical specification for the substation, transmission, and distribution equipment’s and provide subject matter expert (SME) support and expertise to the Project Managers and Project Engineers and for procurement of program wide equipment.
    • Develop detailed design for the construction and project implementation works.
    • Provide input into detailed design review both internal and external to ensure efficient and cost-effective constructability.
    • Review detailed designs submission from design sub - contractors. 
    • Provide technical specification and inputs to tender scope of works development.
    • Provide the engineering Safety in Design (SiD) reviews and ensure compliance.
    • Power system electrical studies, load flow and protection design.
    • Power System primary and secondary equipment and protection system design.

    Management

    • Lead and train a team of young and enthusiastic engineers as a lead engineer, including assisting where requested with the recruitment, performance review process and organizing training to meet the needs of the organization growth.
    • Prepare discipline specific budgets and maintain fiscal responsibility and control.
    • Implementation and continual improvement of engineering best practice and compliance with ISO 9001 and quality management framework.

    System Improvement and R&D

    • Maximize the value of embedded generation networks to optimize service and operational excellence.
    • Test and implement tools that increase the efficiency and reliability of PowerGen’s transmission, distribution, and delivery of electricity to customers in multiple countries. 
    • Support PowerGen research and development activities on transmission, distribution, and solar and mini-grid technology to lower LCOE and improve reliability for our customers
    • Identify, prioritize, and track the evolution of key technical advances that arise across decentralized energy ecosystem.  Use those developments to continuously improve PowerGen’s existing tools. 

    Other

    • Support technical investigations and fault finding in PowerGen’s O&M areas to identify root causes to help restoration the network quickly and prevent recurrence of the issue.
    • Support business development and nurture relationships with clients

    Qualifications

    • Maintain effective communications and relationships, provide accurate information on Engineering Designs, projects, and assist in the development and implementation construction improvement and efficiencies. 
    • Maintain effective communications and relationships with PMs /PEs, efficient resource planning, priority settings, and development plans for the engineering discipline. 
    • Project Team: Maintain effective communication. Ensure an excellent customer service by responding to customer enquiries, providing sound technical advice and delivery timely, accurate and efficient LV and MV grid design for substation, transmission, and distribution. Networks.
    • Contractors – Establish effective working relationships with the design sub-contractors.

    You Already Have:

    • 5+ years of electrical power system design experience focusing on the substation, transmission, and distribution systems both at low voltage and medium voltage level.
    • Education: Education: B.S. or M.S. in electrical engineering.
    • Proven track record of the power system transmission and distribution project design development. 
    • Knowledge and hands on experience in some of the Power system design tools and system study software e.g. – Power factory, ETAP, PSSE, PSCAD, AutoCAD, PLS CAD, PTW or other equivalent etc.

    Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Manager

    Job Description

    As the FP&A Manager you will play a critical role in supporting the Company’s strategy. Working with the CFO and Senior Leadership Team, you will prepare regular analysis of the performance of the Company’s projects, Business Units and Business Lines versus plan. You will deliver actionable insights from your analysis for the Business Leads. You will, in collaboration with the Business Systems Team, develop reports and dashboards that will be available on demand to senior managers that will provide visibility on profitability of projects under implementation including historical analysis on projects already implemented. You will improve the annual budgeting process. You will help to automate the FP&A processes reducing the time and effort it takes to prepare reports and analysis and significantly reducing errors. You will continuously improve the quality of business analysis produced by the FP&A team.

    You will report to the CFO and work closely with the Group Financial Controller and other members of the Finance teams across the PowerGen Group, including the Business Systems team, commercial teams, investors and grant partners.  

    What You’ll Make Happen:

    • Deliver insightful monthly performance analysis to Senior Leadership by day 5 of each month by Q1 2023 through reducing the number of days it currently takes
    • Coordinate quarterly with business Unit and function leads to obtain revenue projections and update the annual end year projection of revenues and costs versus plan
    • Automate the process of preparing monthly performance reports by project, Business Unit and Business Line to reduce time taken, effort and number of errors by Q4 2022, working with Business Systems and Tech Teams.
    • Provide decision support analytics to Business Unit Leads and senior leadership as requested
    • Improve the annual 3-year Operating Plan process by reducing the time it takes to complete, and by increasing the quality of the output and automating the process for Business Unit and Team Leads
    • Develop dashboards that are available on demand (i.e in the reporting tool) and track Company progress on key metrics against PowerGen 3-year Operating Plan, working with Business Systems and Tech Teams
    • Deliver at minimum of 6 actionable insights every year that will improve the performance of the business by assessing PowerGen business drivers and their impact on financials
    • Delight our investors and grant partners by producing on-time, high-quality reports and quick accurate feedback to their requests
    • Support initiatives targeted at financial process improvement and the implementation of changes to achieve efficiencies and the Company’s objectives

    Project Planning and Reporting Analyst

    Job Description

    What You’ll Make Happen:

    Project Planning and Reporting Analysis

    • Achieve world-class internal project planning and reporting capabilities as the company continues to grow as both the leading mini-grid developer in Africa and a MW scale solar EPC company.
    • Deliver cost-effective project by maintaining the cost, quality, and schedule on track meeting the project deadlines and commercial outcome using industry best practice and with high attention to detail to ensure minimal variation.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver all elements of solar EPC or mini-grid installations from geotechnical, structural, earthing, solar array positioning, distribution, generation, grid integration and safety systems 

    Role Specific Requirements:

    • Work closely with Designers, Project Managers, internal and external project stakeholders to develop and maintain detailed resource loaded schedules of renewable energy design and build construction projects using the project planning software tools.
    • Integrate multiple schedules into a master project schedule, base line, status, and perform measurement baseline. 
    • Develop and maintain summary level schedule reports: Gantt, milestone charts, and other tools used to support critical path analysis, near-term tasks work, priority-based resource allocations, performance variances, and to support cost - schedule integration. 
    • Gather and analyse information to prepare reports on the progress of projects. On-site visits to review construction progress may be required. 
    • Support the project management team in the planning, tracking, analysis, and reporting of projects, including dashboard maintenance.
    • Work in collaboration with project management team to drive consistency of the project scheduling approach to facilitate accuracy in project execution and reporting.
    • Troubleshoot and monitor potential scheduling problems. 
    • Works cross-functionally to ensure proper execution and support for projects between the SBU and BU project teams
    • Maintain accurate records.
    • Analysis of Project performance and profitability data.
    • Preparation of Monthly Report for Sr Management.
    • Facilitate and participate in schedule reviews. 
    • Knowledge sharing with the project team members to learn, or increase skills in, project scheduling company wide. 
    • Qualifications: 
    • Minimum of 5 years of construction / energy project management experience.
    • Proficiency in using MS Project or Primavera and MS Excel or equivalent software.
    • Subject matter expertise to manage an integrated master schedule and the supporting detailed schedules.
    • Planning, budgeting, and project cost tracking.
    • Proficient in MS Office.
    • Experience in using the ERP tool like Odoo or equivalent.
    • Superior interpersonal and demonstrated facilitation skills, including the ability to motivate and influence others, build effective interpersonal relationships, and be able to foster and contribute to a positive and productive team environment.
    • Creative and innovative with assignments. Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in work style to better respond to multiple requests and tasks and handle changes in priorities. Able to embrace and participate in change initiatives.
