    Intern : Climate, Peace and Security Research and Communications - Somalia

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Under the supervision of the Climate, Peace and Security Advisor, the intern will work on: Conduct desk research on climate, environment, and security linkages in Somalia, including water management, food security, displacement, and conflict dynamics.
    • Draft policy briefs, talking points, background notes, and advocacy materials to support UNEP’s engagement with government counterparts, UN agencies, and international partners.
    • Assist in the preparation of speeches, presentations, and reports for high-level meetings, conferences, and donor engagements.
    • Support knowledge management by documenting lessons learned, best practices, and outcomes of advocacy and policy engagements.
    • Provide communications support, including drafting articles, web content, and social media posts showcasing the advisor’s and UNEP’s climate, peace, and security work in Somalia.
    • Assist with coordination and follow-up with Somali line ministries, UN partners, and other stakeholders, ensuring coherence in messaging and advocacy.
    • Contribute to event planning, including organizing side events, technical workshops, and inter-agency coordination meetings.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate program in International Development, International Relations, Political Science, Environmental Studies, Conflict Studies, Communications, or related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience.
    • However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
    • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

    Climate Finance Consultant

    Work Assignments and Outputs:

    • The consultancy will include a comprehensive Climate Finance and Nature Finance Landscape Analysis in Somalia, mapping sources, flows, and allocations across sectors and regions, and identifying gaps relative to national climate, nature and development priorities.
    • The Consultant will undertake a focused case study on the Jowhar Off-Stream Storage Program (JOSP) and Jowhar area, highlighting opportunities for investment in resilience, adaptation, water management, and nature-based solutions.
    • The Consultant will also facilitate stakeholder consultations and workshops with ministries and partners to validate gaps, identify priorities, and inform both the report and capacity-building activities.
    • From these consultations, they will develop a consolidated Somalia Climate and Nature Finance Report integrating landscape analysis, gap analysis, Jowhar/JOSP case study, and actionable recommendations, including a forward-looking plan for strengthening access to vertical funds.
    • Further, the consultant will design and deliver tailored capacity-building activities for government ministries, informed by the stakeholder consultations and report findings, focusing on proposal development, project prioritization, and scaling access to climate and nature finance.
    • As part of this capacity-building, the consultant will prepare training and workshop materials (presentations, handouts, reference guides) and event reports summarizing content, participation, and outcomes.
    • The consultant must maintain regular communication with UNEP and government counterparts to coordinate activities and provide updates.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • An advanced university degree (master's or equivalent) in environmental economics, climate finance, development studies, environmental policy or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. Operational competencies

    • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines;
    • Demonstrates integrity and ethical standards;

    • At least 10 years of professional experience in climate finance, development finance, or related analytical and capacity-building work, preferably in fragile or conflict affected contexts is required.
    • Proven experience in preparing and supporting proposals for vertical funds (GCF, GEF, Adaptation Fund) is desired
    • Strong analytical, report-writing, facilitation, and stake-holder engagement skills is desired.
    • Experience designing and delivering capacity-building activities for government institutions is required.
    • Knowledge of Somalia’s climate, development, and environmental context is desirable.

    GEF Terminal Reviewer for Sierra Leone E-mobility (GEFID: 10273) & Tunisia EE Lighting (GEFID: 9498) Projects

    The consultant shall base the findings of the terminal review on the following:

    • A desk review of: Relevant background documentation, inter alia: Project document and appendices. This includes, among others, relevant work plans, budget and supervision plans, as well as any revisions introduced after approval.
    • Theory of change, problem tree, and logical framework.
    • Project reports, including: half year progress reports, project implementation reports (PIRs), expenditure reports, financial statements, audits, inventory reports, progress reports from collaborating partners, meeting minutes, relevant correspondence, and Tracking Tool;
    • Evaluations/Reviews of similar projects.
    • Interviews (individual or in group) with, including but not limited to:
    • UNEP Task Manager (TM) Programme Assistants, and team members;
    • Executing Agency National Project Director (NPD), Project Coordinators and team members;
    • UNEP Administrative Officer (AO);
    • Project steering committee members;
    • Identified stakeholders, including governmental agencies and officials, representatives from technology and educational institutions, distribution utilities, banks, associations, and NGOs.
    • Other project beneficiaries deemed appropriate for the review. Other data collection tools: If needed, to be agreed between the Task Manager, the Project Managers / Coordinators, and the terminal review consultant at the inception phase.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Academic: Advanced university degree (i.e. master’s degree or higher) in management, business administration, economics, environment, engineering, energy or other relevant area is required;
    • A first level degree with additional two years of qualifying experience maybe accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in the evaluation and monitoring of development Projects in developing countries is required;
    • Experience in working with national governments in Africa or developing countries is required;
    • Experience working on technical aspects of projects in the environmental / climate change sector in Africa is desirable;
