    Tushinde Children Trust was founded in March 2010. It was set up after Megan Wright, a British woman living in Kenya, visited a project working in the Mathare Slums of Nairobi. The conditions people living in are bad; Shanty towns of thousands of one roomed shacks squashed between poorly built high-rise flats. As many as ten people would live in these huts made of wood, mud and roofed with corrugated iron. No sanitation or legal electricity, and limited access to running water. Babies and children would play in the dirt beside open sewers. Children often had to be abandoned at home whilst their parents or carers went to look for money and food. Megan realised that the challenges keeping some children from school in the informal settlements in Nairobi were the same challenges that some children faced in the UK; a family in crisis after a bereavement or a carer with mental health problems leading to a child being neglected. Yet, here in Mathare there wasnt the safety net of social care and interventions. Megan and the Tushinde team decided to start a family support programme that looked at the whole family to help find lasting solutions.

    Counseling Assistant

    Counseling Assistant JD

    • Support the Lead counselor to develop and grow the counseling service in line with needs in
    • developing referral criteria, appropriate assessment tools and interventions ( individual group and family.) as well as consent forms.
    • Assist in developing a case management system in line with the existing system .
    • Providing psychosocial support to referred cases of high and low risk and cases in need of psychosocial support or mental health interventions to the Tushinde caregivers, youths and children.
    • Providing psychological first aid to referred cases of high risk or cases in need of specialized psychological support then linking them to specialized service providers for further support and interventions. These cases include :

    HIV diagnosis and disclosure.

    Drug and alcohol and other substances abuse.

    Cases like GBV ,SGBV and other cases of abuse.

    • Providing adherence counseling to Tushinde beneficiaries living with HIV .
    • Providing technical support to all Tushinde forums. This includes facilitation during youth and girls forums, holidays camps, children assessments , community days and teachers meetings.
    • Providing administrative support to the counseling department.
    • Participation in a weekly family support group thus positive parenting support group.
    • Providing monthly / quarterly reports to the Lead counselor and social work manager.
    • Timely and accurate provision of detailed case notes.
    • Provide administrative support to the counseling department.
    • Assisting the family counselor and social work manager to develop appropriate referral pathways to external partners.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work or other social science related field
    • 2-3 years of experience in a similar position.
    • Licensed or registered as a psychologist/ counselor with relevant professional bodies will be a plus.
    • Proven experience or passion in providing trauma informed therapy and counselling services preferably in settings involving vulnerable populations.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build therapeutic rapport with clients and team members
    • Committed to ethical practices, confidentiality and the well being of program participants.
    • Fluent in both English and Swahili
    • Demonstrated resilience and ability to work and deliver in stressful environments
    • Experience in community facilitation and mobilization
    • Must have a passion to work with vulnerable children, youths and adults.
    • Must be flexible and willing to work in challenging environments i.e. informal settlements.
    • Must have a valid certificate of good conduct

    Programme Officer

    JD for Programme Officer

    • Provide general support to the Programme Manager and Senior program Officer for Tushinde’s programme activities in Kenya, these include both Mathare and Kiambiu projects.
    • Support and advocate for children’s rights and help develop Tushinde programmes accordingly.
    • Support the Programme Manager and Senior Program Officer to organise meetings/ trainings with partner schools and supporting them in developing the child protection policy.
    • Support Programme Manager and the Senior program Manager to organise and facilitate the Community Days, Boys Forums, Girls Forums, Holiday Camps and other events, as needed.
    • Take lead on the daycare programme, by assessing and monitoring children’s development, identifying children at risk and linking them to quality health facilities; regular follow up of children who show no signs of growth improvement and train day care staff on good practices regarding child care and Development.
    • Work with Program Manager and Senior Program Officer to implement policies, standards of practice and guidelines with regards to Tushinde’s work with Tushinde Staffs and beneficiaries.
    • Organise regular meetings with members of main projects, take minutes and ensure follow up is carried through.
    • Build and maintain partnerships and relationships with program partners, such as non-profits, government agencies and community organizations, in order to expand resources, raise funding and educate the public about Tushinde’s work.
    • With the support from Programme Manager and Senior program Manager delegate to new Programme Assistants and Interns responsibility for coordinating engagement with partners.
    • Support data collection, collation and reporting efforts to support and inform monitoring, evaluation and learning in the Family Support Programme.
    • Oversight of the day to day activities at the daycare.
    • Assist in developing and monitoring annual work plans, program initiatives and budget development for different projects and activities
    • Provide support as needed, the preparation and timely submission of detailed donor reports on project activities on a quarterly and annual basis in compliance with project requirements.
    • Facilitate community outreach awareness programmes.
    • Assist in documentation of activity reports.
    • Any other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time.

    Key Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in developmental studies, Project Planning and Management, Social studies or any related field.
    • 2-3 years of relevant work experience - Experience working in a similar role in an NGO will be an added advantage.
    • Self starter with demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently.
    • Experience with donor funded grants is highly desirable.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to prepare clear and concise emails, presentations and reports.
    • Detail oriented with strong analytical and problem solving skills.
    • Demonstrable experience in program management, monitoring and evaluation, and capacity building.
    • Strong proficiency in computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google products and data Management softwares.
    • Must have a passion to work with vulnerable children, youths and adults.
    • Must be flexible and willing to work in challenging environments i.e informal settlements.
    • Must have a valid certificate of good conduct
