    Senior Data Analyst - Mobile Money

    About The Role

    The Senior Data Analyst, Mobile Money will develop clear and well-structured analytical plans and lead the team in analysing large data sets to develop insights and recommendations for the mobile money industry. You will support the Senior Data and Insights Manager, Mobile Money in creating actionable insights through advanced analytical technics. A key responsibility will be in supporting the data analysis for the delivery of the annual State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money, GSMA’s top-downloaded report. You will be responsible for leading the collection and cleaning of supply and demand side data to update databases such as the mobile money deployment tracker, in-house database and industry estimates and forecasts.

    Responsibilities Include

    • Lead the data analytics team in identifying, analysing and interpreting trends and patterns in complex primary and secondary data sets
    • Oversee the operation of the mobile money data management system that supports smooth integration of data from disparate sources, data tracking, data visualisation, data mining and predictive analysis of macro and micro level data
    • Identify opportunities to enhance the Mobile Money Programme through data analysis, identifying and formulating research questions that can be studied through analysis of data, defining data analysis frameworks and managing the data analysis process
    • Liaise with survey participants, partners, as well as industry, and regional experts as and when required
    • Represent data as a strategic business asset for decision-making with GSMA partners
    • You will work on ensuring accurate, up-to-date mobile money estimates and forecast models and will support the team to produce customised industry benchmark reports for mobile money providers and operator groups
    • Continuously evaluate, select and implement new data processing technologies and analyse such technologies’ suitability and compatibility with internal approved infrastructure
    • Ensure that data related requirements for protecting sensitive data are clearly defined, communicated and well understood by all
    • You will also be expected to contribute ideas for how GSMA can remain the main source of insight for the mobile money industry. This requires developing deep familiarity of the mobile money programme’s data assets, analysis and desk research on key mobile money topics
    • Participate in the design and contribution to forums, conferences, strategic dialogues, and workshops that involve the use of GSMA Mobile Money data assets
    • In addition, you will be monitoring alternative sources of mobile money performance metrics and provide analytical support to the rest of the mobile money programme as required. This may also involve fielding requests from key external programme stakeholders and the broader GSMA

    About You

    • You have demonstrable skills in utilizing programmatic and quantitative methods to identify patterns and relationships in large data sets as well as apply statistical and other data driven analyses in the processing of data to guide decisions that will drive financial inclusion in low-and-medium countries
    • You have experience in data modelling and forecasting, experience of data warehousing and data management tools and environments
    • You have proven knowledge of research processes, including formulation of research questions, identification of data required to answer research questions, and selection of appropriate data analysis techniques
    • You have advanced knowledge of any of programming/software skills required to apply analysis techniques to the dataset(s) available (e.g. Python, R, SPSS, eViews etc.) and MIS systems in general. Knowledge of effective data management technologies is desired
    • You are able to present results from a data analysis exercise in a concise and transparent manner, using written documents, presentations, and visuals (such as graphs and infographics)
    • You have strong numerical, analytical, investigative and data administration skills
    • You will demonstrate a willingness to work in a results-oriented team environment where priorities can change
    • You will demonstrate a “can do” attitude, be eager to identify and suggest ways of improving existing processes and have the ability to work in a matrixed structure, to support cross functional collaboration across the GSMA.
    • You have experience and familiarity with the mobile/mobile money sector and/or working with mobile operators in emerging markets
    • You are a self-starter, taking initiative and acting decisively
    • You think clearly and intentionally; analysing information objectively, understanding issues, solving problems, and forming an expert opinion
    • You possess personal resourcefulness to deal with difficult situations, adapt to change, and facilitate the development of self and others

    Data Analyst - Mobile Money

    A great fit for this role is an individual who appreciates the value data plays in the overall success of the Mobile Money programme, and particularly in the delivery of the GSMA flagship State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money, as well as other strategic insights. The successful candidate must have knowledge of data analytics and must be capable of analysing disparate data sets to support the team in delivering relevant insights for the Mobile Money and wider digital finance Industry.

    This role will report to the newly hired Senior Data Analyst, Mobile Money

    About The Role

    The Data Analyst will work as part of the project team in charge of carrying out supply and demand side data analytics, to create actionable insights and delivering the annual State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money, GSMA’s top-downloaded report.

    • You will be responsible for conducting relevant research, collecting and cleaning data to update databases such as the mobile money deployment tracker, the mobile money in-house database and mobile money estimates and forecasts
    • You will ensure all mobile money deployments are accurately represented and that the project team can produce high quality forecasts and accurate analysis
    • You will perform data processing functions on data sets to ensure completeness and accuracy of data assets before detailed statistical and qualitative analysis can be conducted
    • You will support the Senior Data Analyst in mining and analysing large programme data sets to draw valid inferences concerning progress, impact and learnings
    • You will identify new opportunities pertaining to the use of data assets for the Mobile Money programme
    • You will work on updating the mobile money forecast models and will support the team to produce customised industry benchmark reports for mobile money providers and operator groups
    • You will liaise with survey participants, partners, as well as industry, and regional experts as and when required
    • You will provide data analytics related liaison support to other M4D programmes when required

    About You

    • You will have some relevant experience working with large data sets as well as demonstrate some knowledge of the mobile money industry. Importantly, you will have a keen interest in understanding the drivers of financial inclusion in low-and-medium income countries.
    • It is desirable that you have experience in data modelling and forecasting, experience of data warehousing and data management tools and environments.
    • You have programming/software skills required to apply analysis techniques to dataset(s) and familiarity with relevant programming language/software systems (e.g. Python, R, SPSS, eViews etc.) and MIS systems in general. Knowledge of trending effective data management technologies is desired.
    • You are methodical and be able to quickly grasp new concepts and ideas with a high attention to detail
    • You demonstrate a willingness to work in a results-oriented team environment where priorities can change. You will demonstrate a “can do” attitude, be eager to identify and suggest ways of improving existing processes and have the ability to work in a matrixed structure, to support cross functional collaboration across the GSMA
    • You are interested in the application of mobile technology for social impact and demonstrate a will to learn about the industry
