    Programme Coordination Officer (364 days), P3

    UNEP is one of three original, founding implementing agencies of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), alongside the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The GEF also partners with 15 other Agencies to help developing countries and those with economies in transition to meet the agreed incremental costs of measures designed to achieve global environmental benefits in six focal areas: biological diversity, climate change (both mitigation and adaptation), international waters, chemicals and wastes management and, land degradation.

    The position is located in UNEP, Corporate Services Division (CSD) at the Nairobi duty station. Under the overall supervision of the GEF Coordinator, the Programme Officer will carry out the following duties:

    Responsibilities

    • Follow trends, patterns and early warning of issues related to the GEF portfolio size, shape and relevance and coordinate with GEF Secretariat and focal area Portfolio Managers in pipeline management in absence of the GEF Coordinator.
    • Analyze GEF policies and prepare options to update existing UNEP internal operational and procedural compliance policies, systems, and procedures for achieving compliance within UNEP and with GEF Secretariat.
    • Contribute to develop and implement all business operations relating to compliance; develop and maintain a compliance recordkeeping system to prepare for and inform assessments and audits through detailed reports as needed.
    • Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
    • Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
    • Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions.
    • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
    • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations.
    • Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
    • Participates in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries.
    • Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).
    • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
    • Performs other duties as required.

    • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, preferably in the context of environmental management, research and development or related area is required
    • Experience in GEF project life cycle including development, implementation and reporting is required.
    • Working knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems such as SAP and Integrated Planning Management and Reporting (IPMR) is required.
    • Experience in donor reporting is desirable.
    • 2 years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

    Intern - Digital Strategy, I

    Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

    Responsibilities

    Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

    Search Development Consultant

    Assessing and reporting on the state of the world’s environment is a fundamental mandate of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) process emerged out of this mandate. It is a consultative, participatory process with a strong element of capacity building for global environmental assessments aimed at the interaction between science and policy decision-making. The GEO process has many elements. It supports multi-stakeholder networking, provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge, promotes intra and interregional cooperation in identifying and addressing key environmental issues and concerns and builds capacity at many levels. Meeting user needs cuts across all elements of GEO outputs. To meet user needs and in response to Governing Council, UN Environment Assembly decisions and Agenda 21, since its inception of GEO in 1995, the process has been expanded, refined and applied to a wide range of GEO products resulting in a family of reports and publications. Each has its own purpose, process and identity but is unified by the expert-driven, participatory and consultative characteristics of the GEO approach. The GEO-6 specialized reports (so-called major advocacy products) build on the findings of UN Environment Global Environment Outlook report (GEO-6) and provide scientific analysis on the environment and the implications for various stakeholders such as businesses, local government, policy makers, technical experts and the youth. They will contribute to strengthening the Science-Policy Interface.

    Specific tasks and responsibilities

    Under the direct supervision of the Head of the World Environment Situation Room Unit, Big Data Branch, Science Division. The Head of Unit, WESR unit, the consultant will work in the World Environment Situation Room (WESR) and in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) units to deliver three nomination portals to facilitate effective nomination of GEO-7 advisory groups, experts and inaugural meetings, conduct WESR Monitoring and Observability and develop authentication and authorization functionality for the API and provide technical support to partners and ensure hand over, training and orientation of the web and technical work of the GEO.

    Qualifications/special skills

    Skills:

    • Programming skills in PHP, MVC Frameworks and Docker hub is required. Additionally, strong communication skills and planning skills is desirable.

    Academic Qualifications:

    • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computational Intelligence or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or Information Systems in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree is acceptable.

    Experience:

    • A minimum of three years of experience in information technology or related area are required for this consultancy. Proven experience in system's analysis and design, computer programming including advanced programming skills. Experience in the development of applications using MS SQL and relational databases and a good understanding of latest web technologies such as HTML 5 and CSS.3 is desired. Experience in working with international organizations dealing with environmental issues is desired. UN experience is desirable.
    • Must be able to work with minimum supervision, while being an integral part of a team involving members of staff from a wide range of disciplines.

    Intern - Sustainable Fashion (Hone-based), I

    Responsibilities

    Finance and Budget Assistants (4 Positions)

    Duties and Responsibilities

Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
    • The overall objective of the UNEP's Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.
    • The Climate Change Mitigation Unit wishes to engage the services of 4 Finance and Budget Assistants for a period of 6 months to assist in the management of the portfolio. The Finance and Budget Assistants will work with other finance staff under the supervision of the Fund Management and Administrative Officers and assist in Project and Fund management of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Climate Change Mitigation Portfolio

    They will be responsible for the following:

    Budget and Finance

    • Assists in the preparation and review of financial and human resource proposals/requirements. Consolidates budget/work programme with respect to Headquarters' budget, trust funds, grants and procurement;
    • Monitors expenditures and compares with approved budget; prepares adjustments as necessary;
    • Assists managers in the elaboration of resource requirements for budget submissions;
    • Assists in preparation of budget performance submissions and finalization of budget performance reports, analysing variances between approved budgets and actual expenditures;
    • Prepares or customizes financial reports from Umoja generated reports;
    • Co-ordinates with other finance and budget staff on related issues during preparation of budget reports.

    General Administration

    • Drafts routine correspondence to respond to enquiries in respect to relevant administrative, financial audit, personnel matters;
    • Coordinates extensively with service units and liaises frequently with internal team members
    • both at Headquarters and in the field;
    • Performs other related administrative duties, as required (e.g., operational travel programme; monitoring accounts and payment to vendors and individual contractors for services; physical space planning; identification of office technology needs and maintenance of equipment, software and systems; organizing and coordinating seminars, conferences and translations);
    • May be responsible for guiding and training new colleagues to the team.

    Contract Administration

    • Assists with day-to-day administration of contracts between the UN and external contractors for outsourced services;
    • Audits the contractors' invoices against the goods and services provided by the contractor and approved by the UN;
    • Processes the payment of contractors' invoices and monitor payments;
    • Prepares and processes all UN forms and permissions for contractual and work Unit, Section or Service UN staff, including: UN grounds passes, property passes, UN parking permits, swipe-card access and door keys.

    Qualifications/special skills

    Academic Qualifications:

    • A first-level university degree in the fields of Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Studies or related area.

    Experience:

    •  A minimum of seven years work experience in the fields of Accounting, Finance or related area is required.

    Webinar Moderator Consultant

    The consultant will be expected tcarry out the following tasks:

    Support the organization of 4 digital events, in close coordination with the Head of GO4SDGs and the relevant regional focal point from the wider UNEP GO4SGDS team:

    • Substantive background research and preparation for the respective topics of each of the 4 digital events.
    • Planning meetings with the Head of GO4SDGs and/or the relevant regional focal point from the wider UNEP GO4SGDS team
    • Co-creation of digital event session flows/scripts with panellists’ questions and polls in collaboration with UNEP GO4SDGs
    • Briefing meeting with speaker’s digital event, bilaterally and/or collectively, tprovide guidance, discuss questions and ensure alignment; and
    • Professional moderation and facilitation of 4 digital events on the scheduled dates
    • Social Media posts tpromote the conversation (content tbe provided by UNEP GO4SDGs) on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter per panel
    • Engagement of event audience in topics related taction post-Stockholm+50, notably the three initiatives launched at Stockholm+50

    Qualifications/special skills
