    Research officer - Epidemiology One Health

    Key Responsibilities  

    • Support the design, development, and implementation of a national sero-prevalence and risk factor survey on six diseases namely: - Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), Sheep and Goat Pox (SGP), Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP), Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Lumpy skin disease (LSD) and Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in cattle, sheep and/or goats in Kenya
    • Take lead in conducting a desk review on the six diseases named above and prepare a report.
    • Prepare research ethics applications, data sharing agreements, and progress reports.
    • Represent ILRI on a day-to-day level with project partners and take responsibility for maintaining good relations with study participants, local authorities, and other stakeholders.
    • Support analysis of samples and build capacity junior laboratory technicians.
    • Liaise regularly with government officials.
    • Disseminate research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
    • Be willing to spend long days in the field.
    • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned.

    Requirements

    • MSc degree program in epidemiology, One Health, Global Health or equivalent.
    • Minimum of three years' experience in data analysis in field-based projects
    • Proficiency with appropriate analytic software and tools, especially R.
    • Excellent organizational, analytic, and interpretive skills.
    • Excellent written and spoken English.
    • Good interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills, especially to diverse audiences and targets.

    Technical Assistant II

    Key Responsibilities  

    • Establishment and maintenance of field and greenhouse experiments including trial layout; land preparation; pot filling; planting; harvesting and routine maintenance (weeding, watering etc.),
    • Maintenance of a safety duplicate of vegetatively-propagated Genebank materials,
    • Collection of field data including but not limited to soil moisture determination, recording of plant growth parameters and disease symptoms.
    • Conducting seed viability and germination experiments,
    • Sample collection and preparation (drying, grinding, weighing etc.) in preparation for nutritional profiling.
    • General support on forage establishment.
    • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned.

    Requirements

    • High school certificate (KCSE)
    • At least two years of experience in a similar position with hands-on knowledge in all essential field and green house procedures including but not limited to: soil sterilization and potting, planting and watering, pest control, collection of plant samples.
    • Knowledge on greenhouse procedures and plant propagation/maintenance,
    • Knowledge of trial layout and experimental design,
    • Basic knowledge on plant agronomy,
    • Basic knowledge on using sample preparation equipment including milling machines, oven driers etc.
    • Relevant training on working with plants and plants pathogens,
    • Familiarity with routine screen/greenhouse procedures.
