    NSPP Technician - Cereals (Ruiru)

    Role Purpose

    To help lead and manage the Cereals Research & development Nursery seed production activities aimed at delivering breeding and seed production technologies in line with the seed development business objectives.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Supports overall Site Research Program for cereals aimed at establishing a Centre of Expertise (CoE) in Research for new genetic trials, new technology screening and developing crop production & processing improvement programs to improve productivity.
    • Helps implement the annual crop calendars as developed by the Demanders and translated by the Crop manager
    • Ensures timely execution of all operations for the development of SSD & CMS lines including sowing, plant morphology recording, field observations, plant and ear selection and pollination, harvest and threshing, label production and data collection, shipment preparation together with post-harvest and logistics departments
    • Executes the tissue sampling, freezing, and drying of various material in readiness for marker testing in our molecular marker lab in France.
    • Participates in developing scientific evidence-based standards and analytical capabilities including experimental design & reporting, standardized tools and metrics, and upscaling/change management processes to realize reliable results- e.g., LCS - Harvesting stage, Cycocel, plant nutrition, tray well size, etc.
    • Takes lead in reviewing ‘Crop Production' Best Practice Protocols in liaison with your line manager and the breeders and/or their crop specialists
    • Communicates progress reports effectively to the crop manager and breeders to enable prompt decision making during the production process.
    • Ensures optimization of all resources allocated to him/her in execution of duties and looks out for and leads the implementation of continuous improvement (LSS/OPEX) opportunities to achieve productivity improvements.
    • Collaborates with the R&D Veg & DFC section in sharing best practices and optimization of resources like, people, media, trays/pots, labels, seed machines, greenhouses, etc., where applicable.
    • Supports Budgeting and budget management by providing data to help continuous monitoring of performance against budget.
    • Provides adequate and continuous training and objective performance evaluation of the team to secure efficient and sustainable delivery to the customers while intentionally and relentlessly working with individual workers to improve in areas where they are weak and identify and nurture talents.
    • Efficiently allocates tasks to the workers based on capabilities and competencies to secure efficient and cost-effective delivery of our promise to the customers
    • Takes lead in troubleshooting and conducting RCAs using appropriate Problem-solving methodologies when significant deviations in protocol or overall performance occur.
    • Champions the implementation of Syngenta HSE policy and adherence to all HSEs rules in all decisions and activities on site, taking lead in submitting safety observations/Near misses for remediation.
    • Always ensures compliance to phytosanitary/Hygiene protocols within the site
    • Supports the attainment and sustenance of the GSPP/Syngenta QMS accreditations for the GSPP section and the non-GSPP section within the R&D site respectively.
    • Champions the implementation of DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY both in Cereals and other operations on site i.e. Digital data capture and reporting, label-printing and barcoding systems to eliminate pen and paper, while improving efficiency and accuracy. This role is by default the digitization champion
    • Any other tasks & projects as may be allocated from time to time by the line manager.

    Agronomy Assistant Supervisor- Irrigation (Ruiru)

    Role Purpose

    To monitor and control water treatment, ferti-irrigation processes, greenhouse climate for the R&D site.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Ensures sterilization of irrigation water as per the protocols to achieve the set standards.
    • Ensures conditioning/treatment of drinking water to make it fit for human consumption.
    • Samples the different input and drain solutions in different crops and crop stages for analysis by site lab or an accredited laboratory whenever required.
    • Ensures, through active consultation, that correct recipes as formulated by the Quality & Agronomy Lead are adopted as per the crop needs/lab analysis for quality seed production.
    • Ensures timely requisition and mixing of fertilizer in the different stations within the R&D site.
    • Ensures timely dosing of various fertilizer recipes, at the Main station and sub stations to achieve the desired target pH/EC.
    • Monitors irrigation of the crops in the greenhouses to ensure it is done with prevailing weather conditions in mind.
    • Ensures greenhouse climate is controlled through setting the right parameters for each crop on the climate computer(s) to achieve conducive growing conditions.
    • Ensures that all Fertigation machines and equipment (including drip lines) are in good working condition and promptly report any malfunction for repair.
    • Supports the production team on matters regarding water management to achieve a healthy crop throughout the growing cycle.
    • Facilitates Crop protection activities through drip irrigation (drenching) in liaison with the Crop Protection Supervisor when needed.
    • Ensures all irrigation and Climate related data is collected, tabulated and presented on time for analysis and decision making.
    • Ensures supervisors on duty are briefed on fertigation processes including trouble shooting and reporting during weekends and or holiday duties for prompt remedial action in case of system failure.
    • Ensures all equipment and structures are serviced regularly, calibrated and records kept accordingly (In liaison with the Quality and Agronomy Lead & NSPP Technician -Engineering Operations).
    • Ensures adherence to Phytosanitary standards in all Fertigation processes to control plant pathogens.
    • Ensures all QMS documents related to irrigation are reviewed regularly to update any process changes.
    • Enforces HSE rules and regulations and champions the implementation of the Syngenta HSE policy in all business operations.
    • Any other tasks & projects as may be allocated from time to time.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum Diploma in Water and irrigation management, Horticulture/Agriculture or related field.
    • Up to 3yrs in a relevant field
    • Knowledge in hydroponics preferred

    Scout

    Job Purpose

    Execution of crop scouting duties to ensure monitoring and quantification of pests and diseases is properly carried out in the allocated sections..

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conducting crop scouting and monitoring for pests and diseases in the different greenhouse compartments and or sections.
    • Ensuring that all disease & pest monitoring and control strategies are in place, for example checking on the effectiveness of the sticky traps, checking for any openings in the greenhouses and sealing the openings that are within reach.
    • Collecting plant samples for pathological analysis. Ensure labeling is done correctly including plant variety / trial, location of the affected plants, and symptoms observed.
    • Implementation of IPM strategies and follow up of the same.
    • Chemical spray follow-up and proactive communication on the effects of spray application.
    • Timely submission of the daily scouting report to the Quality and Agronomy Lead for prompt action.
    • Timely communication on observations made in the greenhouse compartments to the Technicians/ Team leaders.
    • Assist in setting up Quality & Agronomy based trials, following up on them to the end and being able to offer conclusions based on the results.
    • Participate in spotting and eradication of weeds/host plants inside and outside the greenhouse compartments.
    • Ensuring that data on pests, diseases and pathogens identified during crop scouting, and laboratory analysis are recorded correctly in line with the Syngenta QMS.
    • Enforce the Phytosanitary rules and regulations.
    • Implementation of Syngenta HSE policy and standards.
    • Any other tasks and projects as may be allocated from time to time.

    Qualifications and Work Experience

    • O-Level Certificate with a minimum grade score of C -
