    Copyright Associate, Library Department

    Job Summary

    The Copyright Associate position will help the Aga Khan University (AKU) academic community to ensure compliance with copyright laws concerning the use of digital learning materials in courses offered through blended and digital learning approaches. The appointee will provide assistance with copyright and fair use guidelines and procedures to faculty, staff and students on all AKU campuses who are engaged in all teaching and learning programmes. S/he will play a central role in the creation of an AKU wide Copyright Office which will be responsible for dealing with all copyright requirements for AKU’s teaching and learning activities, including developing and delivering tools and events for disseminating standards, guidelines and best practices on copyright issues.

    Responsibilities

    • Coordinate with faculty, staff and students across entities to understand their requirements with respect to digital learning material, which they wish to use in their courses;
    • Advise faculty, staff and students about what they can and cannot use and/or reproduce without seeking copyright clearance;
    • Correspond with owners of copyrighted material and ask them for permission to use that material;
    • Secure permissions for photocopying and digital use, mostly for blended and digital learning course content, of the material owned by copyright holders;
    • Maintain and update a database of material for which copyright clearance has been obtained;
    • Conduct workshops on copyright-related matters to raise awareness and champion the cause;
    • Create awareness for faculty, staff, and students in order for them to be able to observe copyright law, educational fair use guidelines, and other relevant policies in their creation, distribution, and use of educational materials;
    • Circulation of library information materials;

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Law (LLB) or Library Sciences. A Master’s degree (LLM) or near completion would be an added advantage.
    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the Publishing industry, Libraries or in any academic related function where communication is essential;
    • Experience in developing/delivering training programmes; teaching or training experience would be a definite asset;
    • Thorough understanding of local and international copyright laws;
    • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and work well under pressure in a fast-moving environment.

    Associate Librarian , Library

    Job Summary

    To support acquisition, organization, dissemination and exploitation of information resources appropriate to the faculty, students and staff of AKU; and to effectively support the teaching, learning and research objectives of the University.

     

     Responsibilities

    • To provide front-line library & information services;
    • To support library users in reference services; develop and maintain libguides with relevant links to information sources of specific subjects;
    • To support library users in retrieving information resources both in print and electronic formats and to facilitate access to bibliographic and full-text databases;
    • To receive, process and catalogue books and periodicals;
    • To maintain and update bibliographic details in the library management system and to update other library databases, including the digital repository;
    • To update and implement library policy and procedures in appropriate areas as directed;
    • Shelving books and maintaining shelf reading for easy location of resources;
    • To support reader services by registering library users and maintaining their records and user statistics;
    • Charging and discharging library resources. Monitoring dues and notification process;
    • Identify and facilitate the acquisition of relevant books and electronic resources;
    • Train library users in class or in person how to access and use both print and online resources including academic databases; and
    • Co-teach undergraduate information literacy and data retrieval foundational courses.

    Requirements

    • Master’s degree in Library & Information Science or equivalent with 3 to 4 years of experience;
    • A good understanding of the work of academic libraries;
    • Experience of participating in a team, cooperating, and contributing when required;
    • Accuracy and attention to detail;
    • Proficiency in ICT;
    • Sound knowledge of Library Management Systems and a range of library procedures; and
    • Knowledge and skills in supporting research in Evidence-Based Practice and Systematic Reviews.

    Assistant Professor (Research Scientist), Institute for Human Development

    Job Summary

    The Research Scientist will support the Director of IHD to coordinate research activities for various projects within the departments. The position will have a two specific focus. First will be a position focusing on climate change and its impact on human functioning, especially in the context of nutrition, agriculture, and related aspects.  The second position will have a strong focus on genomics and mental health, examining biological, social and epidemiological aspects of mental health in the contexts of various conditions including HIV, and neurodevelopmental disorders among others. 

    Responsibilities

    • Coordination of all study-related field activities, including stakeholder and community engagement;
    • Facilitate the planning process for project, launch and implementation in liaison with the project teams;
    • Stakeholder engagement;
    • Development of SOPs and quality control measures;
    • Ensure readiness of data collection tools and devices (translations, consents, recording, storage and safety);
    • Lead the implementation and evaluation of projects;
    • Oversee projects risk identification, mitigation, monitoring and updating of risk registers;
    • Organize the field team for data transcriptions, cleaning, and coding;
    • Ensure proper storage of all records and raw data;
    • Ensuring appropriate back-up of study data is in place;
    • Support with analysis of data;
    • Ensure reporting procedures (Technical and financial) as stipulated by the donor are adhered to;
    • Lead in the write up high quality manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed journals.
    • Mentor and supervise study teams;
    • Ensure project activities are packaged and displayed through the IHD website and other relevant platforms that are accessible to the intended audience;
    • Plan for information dissemination of study finding through appropriate channels to all the relevant stakeholders including the policy makers, implementers, academicians, other scientist and study beneficiaries;
    • Lead in packaging information for dissemination to different audience including policy briefs and presentations;
    • Mentor and supervise Masters, PhD and Junior research fellows in the department;
    • Develop research ideas and submit for funding as the Principal Investigator;
    • Contribute to departmental-wide grant applications and submission;
    • Support junior faculty and PhD students in their efforts for resource mobilization
    • Ensure proper documentation of all procedures and overall research process in coordination with the data manager;
    • Work closely with the AKU communication team to ensure project activities are profiled through the different channels of communication targeting all key stakeholders including adolescents, parents, implementers and policy makers; and
    • Support with scientific communication through dissemination in conference and peer reviewed journals.

     Requirements

    • PhD in Psychology, Environmental Sciences, Epidemiology, Biological Sciences, Nutritional Sciences or other allied fields;
    • At least 4 years of Post PhD research experience post;
    • 1 – 2 years’ experience teaching at the University level would be desirable;
    • Significant and relevant experience in designing and setting up a research project;
    • A track record of successfully attracting research funds;
    • A track record of publishing in peer-reviewed, high-quality scientific journals;
    • Demonstrable experience in mentoring and supervising students;
    • Advanced statistical analysis skills;
    • Experience in community mobilisation and partner engagement processes;
    • Track record of either clinical work or lab work would be an added advantage; and
    • Willingness to travel outside the country.
