    Maintenance Mechanic (Plumbing)

    JOB KNOWLEDGE: 

    The incumbent is required to have a thorough, technical understanding of major building plumbing/mechanical systems and equipment, with a specialty in plumbing systems.  Familiarization with general mechanical systems, including domestic hot and cold-water piping systems, wastewater piping systems and vent stacks, storm water management systems, chilled water systems, water treatment facilities, swimming pool equipment, fire suppression systems, compressed air systems, and irrigation systems is required.  Familiarization with the many different types of pipe and fittings (PVC and CPVC, copper, galvanized, concrete, black, etc.) is required.  Must know how to diagnose the root cause of a problem and what materials and equipment will be needed to facilitate repairs.  Must know how to work safely on equipment, systems and associated components including the use of lock-out / tag-out safety measure.   Knowledge of IBC standards, and fire and life safety codes is required.   

    Education Requirements:

    • Completion of secondary school is required.
    • Completion of vocational training program from an accredited institute recognized as producing journeyman level plumbers and mechanical system specialist trained in the maintenance of commercial or industrial buildings/facilities is required.  
    • Training through a recognized apprenticeship program provided by a trade union is considered acceptable.

    LANGUAGE:  

    • Level II English (Limited Knowledge, Writing/Reading/Speaking) is required. (This may be tested) and Level III Swahili (Good Working Knowledge, Writing/ Reading/ Speaking) is required.

    EXPERIENCE: 

    • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience working as a journey-level plumber in the repair and maintenance of plumbing/mechanical systems in commercial or industrial facilities is required.  Must have experience working with PVC, CPVC, copper, galvanized, concrete, and black pipe, circulation and well pumps, and water treatment equipment.

    Duties

    • The incumbent reports to the Building Engineer Supervisor.  
    • The incumbent is employed as a journeyman level Maintenance Mechanic - Plumber to carry out skilled maintenance and repair work  on the critical and non-critical mechanical and plumbing systems throughout the New Embassy Compound (NEC) functional/office buildings, on-compound ancillary support and residential buildings, above and below ground infrastructures, recreational facilities, and other owned/leased properties. Back to top

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

    • The incumbent must be skilled at reading and interpreting technical documents including layout drawings, as-built drawings, riser diagrams, equipment schedules, operations and maintenance manuals, and other manufacturer’s literature.  
    • The incumbent shall have the skills and abilities in the following areas: diagnosing and repairing filtration systems, water pumps, hot and cold-water systems; testing potable water system components, monitoring of chemical and salt injection systems, and taking equipment readings with various meters; use of hand tools, power tools, and specialty tools to determine appropriate repairs.  
    • Additional skills include installation and repair to the various types of plumbing pipe such as PVC and CPVC, copper, galvanized, concrete, and black pipe; distinguishing frequencies and sounds, color codes and odors in the operation of equipment in order to troubleshoot for repairs.  
    • Additional abilities include responding to emergency situations in an efficient and timely manner to effect immediate repairs; work in various adverse conditions such as tight or enclosed spaces, on ladders at various heights, and in temperature extremes, indoors or outdoors to complete work assignments; communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, contractors and vendors to obtain and provide pertinent information. Must be computer literate, able to navigate through the Microsoft Office Suite software including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point; able to draft reports and create spreadsheets, and able to write e-mails and research information on the Internet.  
    • A valid driver’s license is required.  
    • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to handle a large workload and multiple tasks.  
    • Must be organized.

    Maintenance Mechanic (Generator)

    JOB KNOWLEDGE: 

    Knowledge of the internal working of a combustion engine, torque values at various RPMs, and methods and standards for routine maintenance on combustion engines is required.  Must have a very good technical understanding on how diesel engines are sized for generators in order to obtain optimum performance from both pieces of the packaged unit.  Must know how to adjust valves, change filters and belts, adjust speed to achieve hertz levels (50 or 60 Hz), and make minor repairs.  Must know how to research information on the internet in order to get up to date information from the generator manufacturer.   Knowledge of fire and life safety codes and standards is required.

    Education Requirements:

    • Completion of secondary school is required.
    • Completion of training program from an accredited institute recognized as producing power generation diesel engine mechanics is required.

    LANGUAGE:  

    • English level II (Limited Knowledge) Written/Speaking/Reading in English is required

    EXPERIENCE: 

    • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of prime or standby power generators for large commercial properties such as high-rise office buildings, a hospital or college campus, or for the local utility company is required.  One year of which should be in the operations, maintenance, and repair of 1000 KVA or larger generators.

    Duties

    • The incumbent reports to the Building Engineer Supervisor.  
    • The incumbent is employed as the Maintenance Mechanic - Generator to carry out skilled maintenance and repair work on prime and stand-by emergency generators for the New Embassy Compound (NEC) and residential owned/leased properties.  
    • Responds to scheduled, unscheduled and preventive maintenance work orders generated by the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). 

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Must have the skills and abilities in the following areas:  

    • Diagnosing and repairing diesel engines
    • Large packaged generator and alternator units
    • Testing electrical components and taking equipment readings with various meters, hand, power, and specialty tools to determine appropriate repairs. 
    • Lifting and carrying tools, equipment, or parts, maximum weight 25 kilos. 

    Additional skills include 

    • Installation of emergency standby generator systems; 
    • Installation of plumbing lines required for the transmission and distribution of diesel fuel; 
    • Distinguishing frequencies and sounds, color codes and odors in the operation of equipment in order to troubleshoot for repairs.  

    Additional abilities include 

    • Responding to emergency situations in an efficient and timely manner to effect immediate repairs
    • Work in various adverse conditions such as tight or enclosed spaces, on ladders at various heights, and in temperature extremes, indoors or outdoors to complete work assignments
    • Communicate orally and in writing with co-workers
    • Contractors and vendors to obtain and provide pertinent information.  
    • Must have good computer skills, and able to write e-mails and research information on the Internet.  
    • A valid driver’s license is required.    
    • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to handle a large workload and multiple tasks.  
    • Must be organized, with a keen aptitude to work independently, impeccable integrity, strong initiative, good judgment and to maintain confidentiality.

    HVAC Technician

    JOB KNOWLEDGE:  

    The incumbent must have superior knowledge, exceptional technical skills, and a thorough understanding of HVAC systems with an in-depth understanding of thermodynamics and how they apply to HVAC theories and principles.  Must be well-versed in HVAC controls including motor starters, thermostats, humidistats, variable frequency drive (VFD) motors and controllers, motorized and gravity dampers, and building automation systems and sensors.  Must have a thorough understanding of U.S. or IBC standards, mechanical / ASHRAE standards, indoor air quality standards, building pressurization, ductwork sizing and air flow principles, and fire and life safety codes. 

    Education Requirements:

    • Completion of secondary school required.  
    • Successful completion of vocational training from an accredited institute recognized as producing journeyman level technicians with specialization in the HVAC field is required.  
    • The Incumbent will have completed a course of study covering the principles of HVAC, system design, system maintenance and troubleshooting, the various types of Freon and their uses, building pressurization, indoor air quality, and other specialized applications is required.

    LANGUAGE:  

    • English level II (limited knowledge) Written/Speaking/Reading is required. (This may be tested). Level II I(Good working knowledge) in Kiswahili is required.

    EXPERIENCE: 

    • A minimum of three (3) years of journey-level experience in the installation, operations, repair and maintenance of commercial or industrial HVAC/mechanical refrigeration systems and a minimum of three (3) years work experience operating, maintaining, or repairing 100-ton chillers or larger, and large air-handling units is required.  Work experience must demonstrate a progression of increased responsibility working on complex sophisticated equipment and components, including operation and maintenance, and troubleshooting

    Duties

    • The incumbent reports directly to the Building Engineer Supervisor.  
    • The position holder is employed as a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician to accomplish skilled maintenance and repair work at the journeyman HVAC technician level, to International Building Code (IBC) standards, throughout all facilities on the New Embassy Compound/New Consulate Compound (NEC/NCC) to include office buildings, out buildings, ancillary structures, and residential owned/leased properties.. 

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    The incumbent will have superior skills and abilities in the following areas: 

    • Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing HVAC systems and components; taking and interpreting equipment readings with various meters to determine system performance; skilled using all sorts of hand tools, power tools, and specialty tools typical of the HVAC trade to install, remove, update, and/or determine appropriate repairs to any component of a HVAC system including control sensors, controllers, motors and dampers.  
    • The incumbent must be computer literate with good skills using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) software; able to apply basic math and algebra skills when sizing equipment; able to read and interpret construction and as-built drawings, and manufacturers technical literature; able to research the internet to find replacement parts for systems and equipment; and, knowledge of troubleshooting techniques and industry best practices to correct/resolve HVAC issues quickly. 
    • Must have substantial skill in comprehending engineering reports, specifications and related materials in English.  

    Additional abilities include 

    • Responding to emergency situations in an efficient and timely manner to effect immediate repairs; work in various adverse conditions such as tight or enclosed spaces, heights, and temperature extremes, indoors or outdoors to complete work assignments

    Roving Secretary (Administrative Assistant) - USEFMs Only

    JOB KNOWLEDGE: 

    Incumbent will need to have a broad knowledge of the Embassy, including all Agencies.  The incumbent will interact with employees from the Embassy and other Agencies as well. Job holder must have a good general knowledge of agency correspondence and other applicable office procedures. The incumbent must be able to respond to some questions from VIP visitors and the Front Office regarding Area.  Confidentiality is imperative.     Duties

    • This is a Full-Time position that reports to various sections throughout the Embassy, providing administrative assistance as needed. As directed by Section Chiefs, duties include administrative functions: i.e, draft correspondence, diplomatic notes and demarches; type reports and cables; prepare briefing books and talking points; answer telephones and screen calls; take accurate messages; meet and escort visitors and work crews; sort and distribute mail; organize and maintain paper and electronic filing systems; schedule and take notes at meetings; schedule appointments; and perform other administrative support functions.    
    • Works directly under the supervision, direction of the Section Chief and indirectly reports to the Supervisory Human Resources Officer (S/HRO).

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Attention to detail and accuracy is required as well as proficiency in Microsoft Suite to include PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and in house applications such as MyData and MyServices.  
    • Ability to prioritize and organize tasks to accomplish the workload.  
    • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills are mandatory to develop cooperative working relationships.  Could work flexible hours and in different sections at short notice.  Requires a TOP SECRET security clearance.
