    Assistant Head - Pastoral

    The Assistant Head (Pastoral) (AHP) will have overall responsibility for all matters relating to Pastoral care (that is curriculum and care provision as it relates to the whole school) at the assigned school (watch: https://vimeo.com/128258655) The AHP will have a clear understanding that pastoral care covers both the affective and curriculum elements of work with young people. Pastoral Care involves teaching and opportunities for the individual’s growth in self-esteem, confidence and independence, facilitating the development of pupils’ personal, social and emotional intelligence. The Assistant Head will work alongside the Headteacher and other Assistant Heads to create a coherent management of Learning across the school. The leadership of the Academy shall comprise of Assistant Heads Pastoral, Teaching and Learning and Headteacher. In the first instance the post holder will concentrate on the development issues arising from the GCA Review March 2015, the resultant Action Plan, Self-Evaluation and Development Plan 2015-2016. The post holder will also align planning activities with the Governors Strategic Plan and will also be required to work with Headteachers and Assistant Heads within the Academy to ensure continuity of understanding of pastoral care for all students.

    All Assistant Headteachers have the following responsibilities:

    • To be responsible for Quality Assurance, including through performance management

    • To implement whole-school policies and educational initiatives

    • To work with partners and to be a spokesperson for the school

    • To contribute to the Senior Leadership Team with regard to the strategic planning for the school as a whole

    • To contribute to the creation and monitoring of the School Development Plan and SEF

    • To support and uphold the school's policies on behaviour, discipline and bullying and uphold the school's behaviour code and uniform regulations by ensuring whole staff involvement

    • To assist in the selection and appointment of the staff of the school

    • To ensure the delivery of Health, Safety and Security policies

    • To be responsible for allocated budgets and the effective deployment of resources so that best value is achieved

    • To attend consultation evenings, parental consultations and other meetings as required

    • To be a presence around the School, including SLT On Call

    • To act as a model for staff and students

    • To formulate a personal teaching timetable in discussion with the Headteacher

     

    The main duties of the post are as follows:-

    • To use a range of strategies to deal effectively with the day-to-day pastoral, behavioural and social issues that arise in the school and support the Pastoral Leaders in the use of these strategies

    • To support and work alongside Pastoral Leaders, Form Tutors, Inclusion Staff and the Headteacher in dealing with these pastoral, behavioural and social issues.

    • To support individual students and help to provide strategies and solutions to meet their needs.

    • To implement school systems that relate to the role of AHP and Pastoral Leaders including:-

                             o - Rewards and Sanctions

                             o - Behaviour Management

                             o - Attendance & Punctuality

                             o - Uniform

    • To liaise with appropriate external agencies as and when necessary.

    • To work with Prefects and others to organise and promote school activities and competitions

    • To participate in School Assemblies and support Pastoral Leader participation

    • To administer First Aid as and when appropriate and organise training for other designated staff

    • To keep appropriate records on individual students and prepare reports as required.

    • To contribute to the development of the school’s student support systems

    • Work in conjunction with Pastoral Leaders to plan, implement and review a positive behaviour management policy across the Academy to ensure it is applied consistently and a positive climate for learning is supported at all times

    • Support all staff with the management of student behaviour across the school.

    • Promote a positive behaviour ethos both in classes and across the school at all times

    • Assist with the effective leadership of Faculty and Pastoral teams, individually and with others by:

                             o Leading on new developments in schemes of work, resources, teaching and learning strategies

                             o Making a leading contribution to team review, monitoring and evaluation and the development of working practices

                             o Taking a lead role in working groups and projects

                             o Leading in other professional development activities

                             o Providing regular feedback and updates to senior leadership team

    • Ensure good and timely communication with parents and members of school staff by the use of letters, telephone calls, and emails etc. to arrange meetings with parents/carers where appropriate.

    • Interview students following referrals related to school work, behaviour, bullying, student concerns, crisis or other incidents.

    • Use knowledge and experience to recommend appropriate actions to Pastoral Leaders to resolve conflict situations between students and use skills to diffuse incidents of verbal aggression from students.

    • Ensure that School Child Protection Policies are followed and liaise with the school Child Protection coordinators ensuring that Child Protection records are accurate and updated.

    • Prepare and review Individual Behaviour Plans, Pastoral Support Plans and contribute to Individual Education Plans.

    • Supervise student social areas at break times and lunchtimes and be available to students at these times.

    • Monitor attendance and punctuality and take positive steps to improve attendance and punctuality. This may include “duty supervision” at the gates before and after school.

    • Maintain student folders and organize the administration related to pastoral procedures. To ensure student records are up-to-date and maintained and contain relevant documentation wherever possible to ensure the SIMS student information

    module is regularly updated for student amendments.

    • Distribute, maintain and monitor student referral forms.

    • Organize and collate work for excluded/sick/absent students where appropriate.

    • Organize and implement the personalization of specific student timetables. This will range from short term mobility issues to longer term arrangements where students are unable to follow a full timetable.

    • Cover the absence of Pastoral Leaders where appropriate.

    • Support the organization of and attending Parents’ Evenings/Open Evenings which will involve meeting with parents/carers and responding to their enquiries.

    • Support the organization of student reports.

    • Promote school visits.

    • Use attainment data with tutors/students/parents etc. to create targets/target groups: devise support strategies or challenges

    In undertaking these duties, the AHP and Pastoral Leaders should ensure that they, pastoral leaders and all teachers should:

    • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons you are responsible for or come into contact with.

    • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.

    • Be aware of, support and ensure equal opportunities for all.

    • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.

    • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.

    • Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required.

    • Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
